2x Software Ltd. bringing VirtualDesktopServer 9 to webOS 30

by Riz Parvez Mon, 21 Feb 2011 11:49 am EST

Need more proof of how prominent HP’s presence in the enterprise sector is? Look no further than this press release from developer 2x Software Ltd., announcing plans to support webOS with it’s VirtualDesktopServer 9 application. VirtualDesktopServer 9, apart from landing you huge points in a game of Scrabble, will give webOS users access to a host of different virtualization platforms, including VMware, vSphere, Citrix XenServer, Sun VirtualBox, Windows Remote Desktop, and many more. 2x states their aim is to allow HP’s new mobile hardware to be “enterprise-ready upon release” by allowing access to a wide range of secure environments across webOS devices.

Nikolaos Makris, CEO of 2x states in the press release that, “ we plan to also provide webOS users with instant mobile access to the business-critical applications they need, continuing 2X Software’s commitment to provide application and desktop delivery to any device, from any location.”

If this news sounds familiar, you probably recall enterprise developer Citrix making a similar announcement on February 9th, just hours after HP’s Think Beyond event. That’s right folks, not one, but two major enterprise-facing software developers are competing on webOS before the hardware has even hit the market. This is certainly a far cry from the days when webOS users couldn’t even see a light at the end of the tunnel for document editing on their platform of choice. Clearly HP takes enterprise very seriously. Software developers are taking notice, and webOS is making huge strides in that direction because of.

when will they release the app?

In coming months.

Within weeks (ie: summer)

OFF topic: What happened with app catalog? Last week it showed 5700 aps, now it's down to 5403?.

By any chance is the App Catalog now webOS version aware?

I believe this illustrates the power of HP.

Wow...little by little things are starting to look a little brighter!

fucking yes.

Cool. Will I be able to use it with Flash on my original Pre?

Is that a joke?

It's a troll.

"apart from landing you huge points in a game of Scrabble"

Now that's funny. :)

Hey folks, I went to check out Verizon's Pre 2, and I have to admit that webOS 2.0 is not only really fast and cool, but it's so elegant and simple. It feels nothing like our overclocked Pres running 1.4.5. The difference is night and day really. Well, I don't know about overclocked plusses. But, webOS 2.0 is a completely different animal IMHO. I am impressed again with webOS and "Just Type" is "just good!! It's an absolutely unique implementation of a search engine that really rocks1 I love the phone hardware and although the slider has a little wiggle and we are talking nothing like our original Pres, you get the feeling of holding a high quality smartphone in your hands.

I said all of that to say that i really hope these developers that are willing to get on board will be an inspiration to many other developers to get a piece of webOS. Because, the apps on the Iphone and Android are REALLY COOL! I get jealous looking at my Iphone toting friends boasting about apps, that we just don't have. It sucks!

Now, back to the Verizon Pre2, the salespeople still do not have training on these phones. It's amazing and laughable how quickly they will move you over to an Iphone or Android phone. In fact, the store that I visited told me upon entering that they didn't even have a floor model Pre 2 to look at. So, my gf and I continued to browse because she wnats an Ipad(grrr!) and after about 5 minutes, the salesperson came out with a Pre2. It didn't even have a home in the store, and was all oily from fingerprints like they all used it and touched it and then just dropped it in a shoebox somewhere.....UNBELIEVEABLE!

My dear Pre friends and HP,

We are in an uphill battle to show that we have the coolest phones, so, HP if you are going to make us wait several more months, Please make sure that when these phones hit the ground that they are absolutely sexy, cool, and powerful! We have the really slick OS but we have a a very tough road to hoe/whore if necessary in order to show the world what webOS can really do!! LOL!

Nice post and good to hear.

I agree that store reps need to give WebOS a fair showing. Weren't they supposed to be learning about it some fancy training web site that HP made?

Also, I think you mean a "tough row to hoe." It's a farming metaphor.

God call on the farming metaphor and that is what i meant "row to hoe" and "road to whore" LOL!

This is a big win win for WebOS

Oh pre3, how I cannot wait to buy you :-)

And the tablet, cant forget that.

something tells me that HP wasn't exaggerating when they stated their target goal was 10000 apps by the touchpads launch. The stars are aligning.

Sure they've stumbled a bit w/ webOS2.0, but they've made clear their path for the future.

HP is going to have the advantage when it comes to both enterprise and scale.

Also, there are a number of Devs struggling to find success in the flooded App store and Android Market place. Those devs are starting see potential $ in rolling w/ HP.

I'm excited

i would be so happy if i d only had a single plain rdp client on my pre

For companies like ours, this is H U G E !!! I confess that I am pleasantly surprised. We'll continue looking at WebOS and future HP announcements. We've only got a few Pre's, one Win Mobile, and one blackberry left of our non-Android smart phones. If HP expands WebOS' activesync functionality adding some Good Technology type device management, we may consider keeping WebOS as an option.
Having 2X AND Citrix onboard... That's a big deal!

@ chillywill, have to agree I went to the Verizon store in Bangor Maine this weekend and the sales folks were absolutely clueless.

A little background. I've been an android user for a year +, have the original Droid. My wife got an HTC Eris about the same time I got mine, 12/2009. She was not smitten to the point that in June of last year she was begging for a new phone. She settled on a Pre Plus and has never looked back.

I have tried to love my Droid, but every time I have picked up her phone, I become jealous at the simplicity of the OS and its clear advantages in multitasking.

I have been following things here on Pre Central for some time with the hopes that Palm or HP now would release something with a little more screen real-estate, as the larger screen of my Droid is certainly a plus (the only plus IMHO), as I run several medical apps on it (Epocrates, Lexicomp, etc). The Pre 3 will work just fine for me. Thing is, I'm inpatient as hell and I've been waiting so long to get my hands on a WebOS phone that I can't wait any longer.

The Pre 2 I demo'ed was truly a nice phone. I didn't notice any lag, apps opened nicely, GPS worked in the store, felt solid, screen (though just as small as the Pre Plus) seemed crisper, really nothing bad to say about the hardware. I ordered one last night from Verizon on-line. I'll give it to my wife to replace her original Pre Plus when the Pre 3 comes out.

The sales drone at the store was completely clueless about WebOS. I was asked why I would want a Pre 2 when I could get a shiny new android or iOS phone. When I explained to him the various reasons for wanting one (more friendly OS, better multitasking, etc) he kind of scoffed at me, hinting that I was perhaps a little loony for thinking the Pre could in any way be considered superior to these other phones. I actually took him over and showed him some of the things to which I eluded and he seemed surprised. We ended up talking about the recent road-map outlined by HP and some of my thoughts on the future of WebOS and HP and he seemed surprisingly interested.

If HP wants to make this successful, one of the many challenges they will absolutely need to overcome is getting the carriers on board!

Here's to the future of WebOS ...

dude... i have gotten the same reactions from people at Sprint.

If that is Truly the case with the sales drones at the Verizon stores, then Pre 2 and Pre 3 may as well hang it up. This was exactly the reason for the Pre and Pre Plus failures, non educated sales staff and a "who gives a dern about WebOS" attitued.

And we know HP isn't that good with mainstream advertising, they can't take any advise from the Palm marketing group either. Ugh Buoy!

Sent from my HTC EVO 4G

I don't know about the enterprise sector but the consumer sector is going down the toilet.

sweet!!!!

NOW GET VMWare ON BOARD!!!!!

Awesome, i'll be able to access my electronic medical record from home and get done work down on my touch pad chillin bed

WHAT DID YOU SAY?

Sounds like this bad dog is going to give me access to a host of different virtualization platforms, which is awesome! So what exactly does that do??

In the simplest description it means you can run another operating system on your device and in turn run all the software from that operating system. Think about using Microsoft Office or Adobe Creative Suite on the Touchpad.

Okay. I dig that. I really need Good to come to WebOS. My company will only support Good. No Good, no go.
