Review: Three HP TouchPad sleeves 19
With HP's announcement that it is discontinuing production and sale of webOS hardware including the brand-new TouchPad, those of us who intend to keep our TouchPads anyway are even more concerned about damage than we were when we thought replacement hardware would be available if necessary. With that in mind, and given that the TouchPad remains a powerful mobile productivity device, perhaps one of these three sleeves (all for sale in the PreCentral Store) may be a good choice. Each offers unique features that will appeal to particular types of users and uses.
(Continue on past the break for the full reviews)
1. The Belkin Max Sleeve
This is a very utilitarian neoprene sleeve, and holds the TouchPad (within a folio case) fairly snugly within its top-zipping, quilted interior. While it expands a bit to hold some accessories (and is unique among three by incorporating an outer zippered pocket suitable for cables, pens and the like, it is not wide enough to carry longer accessories such as the HP Bluetooth Keyboard. Additionally, while the outer surface is textured, the neoprene material is rather slippery to the touch. The Belkin Sleeve is probably best used to protect the TouchPad within a larger case such as a knapsack or briefcase, rather than as a standalone carrier.
2. The Speck Products PixelSleeve Plus
The Speck PixelSleeve Plus is probably better described as a mini soft-sided briefcase rather than a mere sleeve. Unlike the other two products in this review, the PixelSleeve incorporates a soft handle along the top edge; the zipper for the padded enclosure runs along the side. It is also wider than the Belkin MaxSleeve at 10.3" (the Belkin is only a bit longer than the TouchPad's 9.45" longer dimension; in our testing, the additional width allowed the PixelSleeve to also hold the HP Bluetooth Keyboard and we even squeezed in a TouchPad Touchstone and AC adapter. There is no external storage pocket to keep cables and other accessories separate, but the handle and extra width makes this the best of the three for standalone day-to-day use, especially for those who use their TouchPads with external keyboards as portable writing machines.
3. The OverBoard Waterproof Case
The OverBoard is more than just a sleeve; it is a waterproof case made of "environmentally friendly biodegradable thermoplastic polyurethane" whose clear outer front layer (the rear is opaque black) allows use of the TouchPad's capacitive multitouch screen while the TouchPad remains sealed and protected inside. Unlike the other two reviewed sleeves, the OverBoard does not easily allow the TouchPad to be inserted while remaining within its folio case; the fit is too snug, and the inner surface is sticky and adheres to the folio material. It may be possible to force it in, but we did not try, out of concern for damaging the integrity of the waterproof material. Once the TouchPad is in place, the OverBoard seals via four sliding latches in the hard plastic top (which also offers connection points for the included shoulder strap), keeping water, dirt and sand out. If you prefer not to use the shoulder strap, the back of the OverBoard has a hand loop.
Before depending on the OverBoard for inclement weather and use near/on the water (the case is designed to float and is "guaranteed submersible to 19 ft/6m), a purchaser should follow the included instructions to test and verify that the seal is intact. If you're going to frequent water-filled locations on a regular basis with your TouchPad, it's probably worthwhile to retest every few weeks or months to ensure the seal remains good. Assuming it does, however, the OverBoard is a great way to bring your eBooks, Bluetooth-transmitted music and games to the beach or poolside without excessive risk.

I thought all IP-1 cases will fit TP, since thats what H/P designed their tablet on.
Not bad. All the timbuk2 iPad cases fit if you wanted something a bit more colourful. There's one with a built in stand which I've got my eye on. http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/tablet-ereader/
i would get the Speck , but that's a little to steep for me. i'll probably find something cheaper.
I got a Brenthaven Prostyle iPad sleeve for $13 on Amazon, and it is absolutely phenomenal. Based on the other sleeves I've seen priced in that range, I'd say the Brenthaven is worth about 1.5 or twice what I paid for it. It has a sturdy nylon exterior, enough foam padding to make it feel really solid and secure, sturdy zippers with excellent zipper pulls on them, and a super soft and fuzzy interior faux-fur liner. It has an exterior zippered pocket that's also lined with the faux-fur, though it's quite a tight space that really can't hold much. It's a bit bulkier than other sleeves because it does have some added protection, but it's still fairly svelte. Oh, it's also got a piece of nylon webbing attached across the bottom on one side that is great for slipping your hand through when you want to carry the case in one hand by holding it from the bottom. It really is worlds better than so many of these cheap neoprene sleeves that are available.
The only thing I don't know about it yet is whether or not a TouchPad with the HP case on it will fit inside or not. Is should know that within a few days since I've got a case waiting for me at Best Buy.
TP owners may want to consider the iPad sleeve line from Waterfield Designs (www.sfbags.com). I have the iPad Travel Express (and a sleeve for my Fujitsu convertible tablet). They are very well made and have great customer service, though they are kind of pricey.
Does the OverBoard work with the touchstone?
Anyone have an old ASUS EeePC (the original 7" model that started the whole netbook thing) that came with a neoprene sleeve?
I fits the touchpad just about perfectly!
If you are a regular customer of 4imprint.com, they provide their customers free samples of their advertising goods. I ordered a sample of a Case Logic iPad sleeve because we are looking to order either those or some logo'd pens. At any rate, I got one Case Logic sleeve for free, no questions asked. We've decided to order pens.
Not that I want to take business away from PreCentral, but the Speck case is a good price on Amazon.
I agree, if Precentral price was closer I would of got it from them. This case looks like exactly what I was looking for. Need a handle cause I sometimes also travel with my netbook in its case. So a sleeve only wouldn't work for me.
I got three touch pads and they blow iPad out of the water in every way
So when is PreCentral giving these away in a contest? If now, I'll take the Waterproof case! That way I can use google on my Touchpad to identify all the fish I see when I go scuba diving! Touchpad is awesome!
Be careful when selecting a iPad 1 case for the Touchpad especially if it is a fitted one.
iPad case may cover the Touchpad's speakers and ambient light sensor.
Also if the case covers the bezel, gestures such as swipe up and swipe down may be difficult to do.
I understand spending $50 on a nice case, but a *sleeve*? I'll take the $4 chinese ones with free shipping on ebay :)
Well Daddy likes armoured cases, like the Otterbox Defender cases. I have my TP in the HP case which is a nice fit and I have a ZAGG screen protector on it as well. I slip that in a neoprene 10" sleeve, but would prefer something a little more for protection. Don't think Otterbox will be producing a case just yet...
I bought a Cocoon case and really like it. Its front pocket has a CredIt board which holds the power plug and cable. (It would hold a Touchstone but I leave that at home.) It's cheaper than any of the ones here.
Cocoon case
I will tell you THE BEST Case for the touchpad OR iPad is the STM dp-2139-3
It fits the iPad or TouchPad WITH rubber 'custom fit case' AND has a handle, a slip pocket in the back for papers as well as a zipper pocket and a slip pocket. I have carried both my pres and the charger/cable. PLUS OMG, it has a shoulder strap [which is removable. I need to SHOUT THIS from the rooftops. I LOVE IT!!! $30 at Amazon. I got mine at the local bookstore for $24.95

I hope it's OK to chime in here. Thanks to DCFlyer for the rec., but want to let you know that we actually have an HP TouchPad Sleeve that is custom fit. And, we'll be continuing to make them since we'll be custom making sleeves for Tablet owners of all types. Just go to the Tablet page if interested.
