Activate Voice Dial [webOS 2.1] 21

by Adam Marks Thu, 21 Apr 2011 4:56 pm EDT

This tip is only for devices running webOS 2.1 and higher

webOS 2.1 brought with it the ability to dial a phone number using just your voice, thanks to the new Voice Dial app.  Once you activate Voice Dialing, all you need to do to call someone is to speak an actual phone number or just say the name of one of your Contacts.  But did you know that there are actually 3 ways to activate Voice Dial?

  1. Tap on the Voice Dial app icon ( ) in your launcher
  2. Press-and-hold the Volume Up button
  3. Open the Phone app and press-and-hold the big call button in the dialer.  (not to be confused with just tapping the button once to redial the last number)

All I want to do is DELETE Voice Dial.

If you dont want voice dial, do this in terminal

novacom -t open tty://
mount -o remount,rw /
ipkg remove pmvoicecommand
rm -r /usr/palm/applications/com.palm.sysapp.voicedial/
mount -o remount,ro /
reboot

If if icon is annoying you, jason has a patch for that.

Just removing that one IPK isn't very clean and isn't enough. Especially considering the contacts plugin is still loading with nothing to feed it (VoiceCommand service not listening anymore but contact still trying to find it). I was having odd issues with contacts after only removing the that IPK, hence, me finding the best way(s) and writing the Wiki Page.

That's a WebOS Internals Wiki page. It's too long for here.

It would be awesome if someone could make a patch for this. I'm too chicken (and stupid) to open up a terminal and try to fix it myself.

I've modified the wiki page. I added a part to simply disable the system service from starting. It requires *NO* system / file alterations. 100% safe even for the squeamish. :-)

It's just a luna-send command to make the VoiceCommand (what VoiceDial is called behind-the-scenes) service NOT start a boot time so it's not running in the background and killing your MediaServer all the damn time...

Also if you missed out on the help into, just speak "Help" to get the tutorial again :)

I would love voice dial on my Pre +. Looking forward to a new Pre3 "sometime this summer" which will give me voice dial.

Upgrade to 2.1. Voice dial works on my (non-activated) Pre Classic with 2.1.

I'd like to add voice dial to my quick launch bar. I'm able to do that, but every time I restart my device, the icon goes away. What's up with that?

When I read "What's up with that" I began to giggle as images of SNL's DeAndre Cole (aka Keenan Thompson) and the guy in the red track suit (Jason Sudakis) dancing like it was 1978 popped into my head . . . What Up With That?

No kidding ... that guy has unbelievable energy to dance/jog through that whole skit. And I still haven't figured out what Lindsay Buckingham is doing in there.

Too bad he has more energy than talent. I still haven't figured out why he's still on there.

There's actually 4 ways.

4. Plug in a headset and way a few seconds when the sound is in use.. The voice dial application will come up.

Other then that minor annoyance, I like it and it works well. Not sure why so many people have an issue with it.

It works okay for me, but the problem is every time I use it, I find that my system sounds go away. The only way to get them to come back is to do a full reboot.

Holding the button on the earplugs for a few seconds, until voice dial activates, is sufficient here. {That's a tip!}

Having the app pop-up on inserting the plug is just bad logic!

I have voice dial on my Pre- . . . I just say the number out loud as I "dial" the number. It works every time. Happy Easter everyone!

is there a solution to the pre 2/ webos 2.0.1 email black box problem. pop mail doesnt load properly.....the toggling between emails doent work very well. there has to be a solution

voice dial sucks for me. Not sure if its my hardware - Sprint Pre or crappy software but it never does what I say nor is there the option for it to learn your voice for greater accuracy.

Press and Holding down the volume down button works also.

Voice Dial works great on my pre- over BT. Hopefully, WebOS will allow some basic 2009 features soon like voice launch and search before HP stops selling phones in a couple of years.
