Agile Messenger to bring PTT, video recording to Pre? 49
Agile Mobile recently unveiled a preview of an app they’re working on: Agile Messenger for Palm Pre. While the fact that messaging apps are on the way for the Pre is no surprise, the feature list that Agile claims for their app is surprising. We’re talking push-to-talk walkie talkie functionality, voice messages, and video messaging. And Agile Messenger is to support Google Talk, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ chat.
There are three options that we can think of to explain this delicious oddness:
- Agile is making stuff up or confused about the current capabilities of webOS. Not likely.
- Agile has invested big time in their own programming to build the framework for audio and video recording and messaging. Also not likely.
- Agile has been working closely with Palm and the new features in Agile Messenger will be enabled by a coming updated to webOS and the Mojo SDK. More likely than the above.
We have no idea when Agile Messenger for Palm Pre will land, as all Agile is saying is “soon.” Currently Agile Mobile has released messaging applications iPhone, S60, J2ME, and Windows Mobile. Looking at these other apps, we can now throw some cooling water on the fiery embers of anticipation: Agile lists the exact same feature set with the exact same wording for all versions of its software.
Will Palm bring video recording and a microphone-enabled SDK to support Agile messenger’s promise capabilities? Yes, eventually, but we wouldn’t be too optimistic that it’s going to be “soon.” Though we would love to be proven wrong. Nudge nudge, wink wink.
Thanks to Azthel for the tip!

First! I'm the man! Blah, blah, blah...
The feature list definitely looks exciting and I can only hope it comes to fruition and in the short term instead of sometime, somewhere, in the distant future. I am really hoping that Palm are going to deliver a major webOS update in the run up to the holiday period in order to entice more users with features the Pre is sadly lacking. Adding them ourselves is all well and good but the majority of Pre users and potential users probably don't even know the first thing about it. webOS needs to 'catch up' so the Pre is on an equal footing with rival products in the same market segment. Hopefully this app (and more importantly the features proposed) is a sign of things to come.
Hey bro it's know... not no. Two different meanings... Just thought I'd share.
It always amuses me when someone makes their own mistake in their rush to correct someone else. I hope the fall from your high horse did not hurt too much bro. The post you should have replied to is below. Just thought I'd share.
lmao! Good one
Haha, so true!
You no I saw the Palm Pre on that ABC show Flash Forward........It was all through the show that's a good look for Palm. I have a Question when will we officially get Forward messaging? And when will we be able to attach Voice Note, Audio (music), Videos to texting I no we cand do that with email except the voice note?????
This needs to come "soon." I am doubtful we get anything like video recording for a while. Just gotta hunch, but yes... prove us wrong, tell me it's gonna be ok......

I used an app under Windows Mobile called LoudTalks that did this, but it was very buggy.
But yeah, definitely the biggest news here is that they're even talking about doing something that isn't currently possible. Hopefully an update is on the way, or Palm is releasing more APIs for devs!!

i'm pretty sure agile messenger had a PTT feature when I had it on my axim x30 like 5 or 6 years ago.
One thing I don't like is that they say it's for "the Palm Pre", not for "webOS". I assume it will still work on the forthcoming Pixi (and future webOS devices). Palm had made it pretty clear to devs that they should steer clear of using "Pre" and use "for webOS" instead.
I guess it's possible that this really IS just going to be for the Pre, and not the Pixi, but that would stink (my wife is going to be getting the Pixi).

Say no more! ;)
no I no i do no more, i mean say no more ya no!
Wait, what...Huh!?

Maybe not safe for work, depending on your work environment. :p
Their PR person is probably using a canned list of features that they eventually expect to bring to all of the major smartphone platforms. They probably haven't done much to look at exactly which features are actually possible in a particular time frame.
Or they assume all those fucntions would be on all higher end smart phones...............Wait pre not so fast
I'm hoping you're wrong, but kind of afraid you're right. I e-mailed them. I doubt they'll tell me anything useful, but we'll see.

Would be great to have a PTT, but I'm hoping that Sprint will add the Qchat to the Pre since it runs on RevA. As much as it doesn't compare to the iden network for PTT, it at least "works" with other nextel phones. Map the PTT to the silly front button in the gestures area.
PTT hurry hurry hurry tooooooo coooooool
So it looks like Palm is going to let other companies do their work for them. Thank god we have the wonderful Homebrew guys to bring us the functions Palm should be bring us. Now they will let another company bring in video recording before they do? Seriously what are they are they(Palm) waiting for? I love Palm and my Pre, but with the Hero out it kinda makes me wonder. I guess I have no choice, but to shut up and wait for Palm to release more basic functions. Again thank you homebrew guys. I have no idea what a lot of us would do without you.
I don't think they're letting other companies do the work.
As stated in hypothesis 3, Palm would probably have Video Recording functionality up and Agile Messaging would use it so they could include it in their application.
I don't get why everyone keeps bringing up the hero in all these posts.
welll..... it's cheaper and has basic functions that the Pre shoudl have. I'm not saying it's better. I'm just saying it has more basic functions than the Pre. Ye I know "Well buy one then". Thats not what I want to do. I love the Pre I just want more functions damn it!
AYqFYG , life insurance rates, health insurance quotes, auto insurance, health insurance,
Good question..
I guess it's because early Pre fans would go out around town to bring a girl home and tie her up in their living room to shout at PAAAAAAAAAAALM.
Now, HTC has their little Superman suit on and is going to deliver all these girls - you know - hoping they'll get a date or something.
Thing is, though, girls only care for fruit-eaters :(
Okay, this was bad enough, but I wrote it, so I'm posting it :)
none of that makes any sense!
I'm assuming someone hit the bar early today.
What d hell you talkin' about? Gotta stop those "liquid lunches". Then again, nothing wrong with that. :)
Ummmm.... Less drugs, more jesus?
;)
WTF is up with everyone's post today,....been a long week!?
I hope the battery life is better than Palm's IM app.
That PPT feature has a reported battery life of over 300hrs.
No, wait, that was 300 seconds! Oh well.
I think Palm would eventually come out with a lot of standard and basic functions for the Pre like foward texting and etc. But where would we be if it was'nt for the Precentral.net guys and WebOs Eternals. We would be in the dinosaur years. They have made a lot of things much more easier for us to enjoy with this phone. I wish people stop bad mouthing the Palm Pre and stop talking so highly on the HTC Hero and Android Phone. If you want a Hero, go buy an Hero. This site is for Palm Pre lovers not
Android Phone lovers.
+1 sick of hearing Hero this Hero that. If you don't like the phone then by all means get a Hero and stop coming on here complaining about the Pre.
The Hero sucks... was just getting my replacement pre activated and was playing with one and was actually contemplating one after now going on Pre #4, mainly for external speaker issues and an earlier reception issue. Only took 5 mins of fooling around with it and my mind was made up... new pre once a month still beats that clunky pos. Android is far from as fluid as Webos. Switching between apps is a nightmare in comparison... it has some cool features I wished the Pre had, but the Pre is all around much more comfortable to use... plus it's fun seeing WebOs grow and the Pre has a lot of room for growth with Os optimizations and future features... it can definately handle much more than what it has now. I think the only thing that will replace my Pre is a webOs horizontal slider! I feel one in the works.... we'll see......
I wasn't saying I wasnted a Hero. All I was saying is I wish Palm would have added some basic features that the Hero has. It sucks seeing friends that have the Hero laugh at the pre because it lacks certain things. As I stated above I knew you guys would say "Well buy one then". I love the Pre I just want Palm to start giving us what we need instead of having Homebrew do their work for them.
Just open up your keyboard and laugh at your friends... open 5 apps and switch between them seamlessly.. and laugh at them... watch a video and compare the screen quality... and laugh at them. There are so many things the Pre does better... features will come. Were talking about a device who's Os is in it's infancy. Good things take time... the good news is that the Pre has a great hardware feature set, which will be able to handle all of the features we want and more... they will come. I don't get why anybody would be ashamed of this device (as I stated in the previous post, I've had my fair share of trouble with my Pre's) it's all part of being an early adopter of a new platform...Also, you have to remember that Palm has to get it's foot in the door and has it's plate full gaining market share with webos devices. Now it's crunch time.. get in before the holidays... the more people using webos, the quicker the features will come.
Can someone please tell me what is so great about PTT? Sorry, but my only run ins with PTT are people in public situations having conversions with others where I can hear BOTH sides of the conversation. It is bad enough when I have to hear one person talking very loudly into their cell phone, but when I have to hear the person talking back it is very irritating. While I can see that there are uses for this type of communications, I fail to see how it can be useful to the general public.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?
Because MY conversation is so much more interesting than anything you can think of or could possible be doing at the time that I can prove my superiority to you by graciously sharing my conversation with you.
Either that or it's like the iPhone - a few have it for something essential and the rest just have one because they're insecure wankers.
Pick whichever one works for you :)
OK, thanks, that clears it up completely!
So in essence what you are saying is that I need more of a life so I can share it with others around me whether they want to be part of it or not, right? ;-)
The sign of the times ....
;)
rotfl @ this thread.. i love the sense of humor.. i wish more people would laugh instead of being pricks.. hopefully an update does come before the holidays.. and i mean as in before thanksgiving.. wishful thinking.. happy friday!
Amen!!!
As with ANY other new app.. WHO CARES! WHAT GOOD are all these new apps as long as Palm has a restriction on how many apps you can have. Until they resolve their memory issue, the Palm Pre is just a BRICK. Yes.. a BRICK. FIX the memory issue or NO apps and NO improvements will really mean anything. Don't they get it? NO one will want a new app if they dont have room on their pre for it. Good grief.
I see the usual faces are trolling again.
LOL... I've been annoyed by public PTT usage before, also.... and I rarely use the voice portion of my smartphone at all, so I don't think I would use PTT a *lot* either; however, there are a *few* situations where I've thought, "ugh, this would be so much easier if I had PTT"... one is in the mornings when I'm coordinating with my carpool partner and we're corresponding (via text currently) on "status updates." It would be a lot quicker if we could just "walkie talkie" it -- especially given how much I hate the Pre's Phone app for its terrible slow responsiveness.
So would "video messaging" be webcam capabilities like we have on AIM or MSN? OR do they simply mean you can send video clips via messenger service?
i cant wait for the video recording so i record crazy ppl on the train lol
