Analysts: Returns Normal, Sales Unknown, & More Apps on the Way 27
Per a Barron's Tech Trader Daily post, Deutsche Bank analyst Jonathan Goldberg has reiterated a “Buy” rating on shares of Palm (PALM) and raised his price target to $17 from $16. Goldberg was quoted saying, "We think market fears about return rates, weekly order trends and applications development,” for the Pre “are off the mark. He continued, "Our checks continue to point to solid demand and carrier interest.”
Goldberg also said he expects Palm to show progress with its applications catalog by September.
For a gloomier perspective, we'll point out that BusinessWeek has chimed in with another analyst roundup pegging the numbers of Pre Phones sold somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000. The even went so far as to call the Pre a "nice product," which is analyst-speak for "doomed." Obviously, we're a bit more confident, but the Verizon launch can't come soon enough.

Even IF sales were down, mobile sales are down worldwide and smartphones are being hit the hardest. We're in the middle of a recession. People who lost their jobs where they could afford an expensive data plan are downsizing their phone service. It's just the way it is right now.
what kind of apps? I need autocorrect and text notification. also a second notification when you miss a call. for a "Nice" phone it lacks the basic software.
no tip calculator/ stop watch? I mean come on.
There are two stopwatch apps on the new PreCentral HomeBrew site (dkStopwatch and PREpoch):
http://www.precentral.net/homebrew-apps
Just search for the tag 'stopwatch'
There used to be a tip calculator. Perhaps they are still moving it over from the old homebrew site.

Just a tiny typo:

The should be They, I think. :)

Anyway, I hope this gets proven wrong and the Pre does live up to its hype.
The most popular app, accuweather, has about 309,000 downloads. I'm guessing the total number of pres sold is around that number..
I just don't understand the side-swipes against Sprint. It has been great for me so far, very nice and helpful at the store and at customer service, better reception than I had with the previous two carriers, no dropped calls what so ever and the cheapest plan around.
I couldn't say more good things about Sprint and the Pre!!
Hogwash. Just because it's not a compiled language doesn't mean you can't write "powerful" apps with it.
Apps i'd like:
app to stream music from my home server with and easy non techy setup and interface that's similar to pre's music program
true facebook app
bank of america
EPL, La liga scores and updates app like NFL
ESPN scores
texas hold em
time warner cable remote dvr app
auto text entry corrector
podcast app, (i'm having issues with prepod)
visual voicemail
features i'd like to see:
blue tooth control from every right drop down menu.
search meter when play a music file.
ability to edit the order of my music program. i hate that it goes genre to songs. i'd prefer it to be like the ipod and go genre, artist, album. cause i don't want to sift through a truck load of individual song names.
good to know. i stumbled on it a bank of america site but wasn't trying to do banking so it made me nervous about it's authenticity. unfortunately it's probably last on that list of importance to me as i'm a lot less likely to risk the security of my financial info over my phone.
as another addition it would also be nice if in my music library my pre understood that "Hip-hop" is not a different genre from "hip-hop" just because one has a capital letter.
also not fond of itunes sync changing all the file names. how bout a normal sync that just shoves my files in the "music" folder without changing all the names.
I love the pre...there are many apps that I have downloaded and made the pre even more welcoming. i have Palm products for over 5 years and I know what capabilities they have and b ythe end of this year (even sooner), the pre will be TRUELY up against the pathetic iphone, which is mediocre wit its apps and service. Sad!!!!
I just want mvoice recording services on this fone like I had on my treo 755p. Greatest recording quality/standards for a fone
i am sure that article was written by an apple insider. we know there will be returns, its like that with any phone. the Pre is the most stable smartphone i've ever used; and i was pleasantly surprised to see even more homebrew apps. keep em coming! thanks for a wonderfully written article.
I like to see Chase mobile banking app for the pre.
