Asus EeePad Transformer Review

When rumblings of a webOS tablet started to roll in, we all couldn't help but wonder if the PalmPad (miss that name) would end up being some sort of giant-touchscreen-with-physical-keyboard monstrosity. The HP TouchPad, as it turned out, was not the frightening beast we feared but dared not speak of, with no physical keyboard attached, but a Bluetooth option available for the touch typists out there.

Android, on the other hand, seems to be the playground for all form factors experimental and otherwise. And now, courtesy of our compatriots over at Android Central, we're getting a look at the first Honeycomb 3.0 tablet with a physical keyboard: the Asus EePad Transformer. It's not a robot in disguise by a long shot, but the 10.1-inch tablet does have an available keyboard dock that turns it from tablet to touchscreen netbook. We'll let Phil do the encapsulating of just what the Transformer means:

"Will the Transformer replace a traditional Windows or Mac OS laptop? Not just yet. And for $550 (or $650 for the 32GB package), you can get a more powerful laptop with a better feature set. But look past the necessity issue. With the Asus EeePad Transformer, you get a semi-laptop experience with the might of Android 3.0 behind it. You get an Android tablet. And an Android laptop. And that's something nobody but Asus can yet offer."

Android Central has a full-and-complete rundown of everything you need to know about the Asus EeePad Transform (what a mouthful of a name), from the comprehensive review and a video hands-on to pricing and availability and what it's like using it with a USB mouse and keyboard and comparing to the venerable Asus Eee PC netbook.

Put Windows 7 on it and I'm sold. As it is, it's trying to be a laptop with only a fraction of a laptop's capabilities.

You really don't get it do you. This isn't trying to be a laptop. It's a really good tablet with more input capabilities. Windows 7 is not a touch optimized OS so this system would not be anywhere near as nice with it installed.

Do you people really not get this?

Yeah, i really don't think you understand this thing. It's an Android tablet, turned laptop. That's the whole point. If you want a Windows 7 laptop, there are thousands out there for you. This is a unique product. Obviously over your head.

Companies need to stop making glossy screens.

lol good luck getting Windows 7 on ARM. Seriously though, read the review, would you rather run Windows on lower powered hardware than it was designed for or Android on hardware that can really let it shine?

Apparently, Microsoft ran the entire IE10 presentation on Windows 7 running on a Tegra2-powered machine.

Hey...I got a table kinda like the one in the picture...only mine doesn't have an ASUS Transformer on it...wish it did. ;)

"Update 4: NVIDIA just tweeted that the mysterious ARM chip is in fact a Tegra 2 processor."

:-)

Looks good. And at $399 it undercuts all the best tablets, and Hp Touchpad!

Big competition

If it were $399 it would be a great deal, but at $550 to $650...forget about it!

The pad itself is $400 with the keyboard running an additional $150. Even at $550 total, it's still less than the WiFi-only Xoom and some other high-end devices out there, and it's pretty much on-par with the specs.

I'm still holding out for the TouchPad though. Honeycomb doesn't quite appeal to me enough yet to warrant the cost, but webOS 3 certainly does.

Guess nobody else sees this as awesome yet a kick in the nuts.

This is the concept Palm was trying to invent with the Foleo idea (given attaching to a phone to, but you get the idea). So HP/Palm should have went this route, and now Andriod has beaten them to the punch again.

This is AWESOME as far as concept, now get webOS on the sucker and I will buy, though is tempting to switch now. I will have to see how I feel when the TouchPad comes out. Also I hope Palm has some kind of patent in its back pocket to sue over this and taht way they can reinvient this the webOS way and make it successful.

Wow, look what android gets... Wow, look what RIM is getting...
WebOS - Stuck on the outside looking in...yet again.

That's exactly what I expected hp to do. A device that could replace my laptop. Why would I want to have three devices?

I wouldn't like something like this. But of course... as soon as HP has some time they can introduce a webOS-device like this too.

For now they should focus an what's hot and that is slate. As soon as they have all the relevant market-segments (keyboard-less tab 9.7", keyboard-less tab 7", 3.7" vertical enterprise phone, 2.6" "casual"-phone, 4" slab-phone) they can concentrate on other areas.

Like: 2.8"-Girl-phone (yes, my GF would consider if she could have something that "fits" her^^), 4.5"-giant-phone (for the uber-geeks of us ;) ), 7 and 9.7"-Tabs with keyboards, tabs with stlylus (what I would like to have!), etc...

There are so many things that HP "could" cover and not a lot that is worth doing for now, with a limited engineering team that they have for sure.

You have Apple on one side, that tries to do one thing at a time but GOOD. And on the other side you have Google and dozens of manufacturers that spite out new devices every second where you get almost every form factor that you can imagine but where also most devices don't meet up to the expectations or get poor support... Somewhere in between HP will be found.

Remember, the Touchpad has a Touchstone 2 dock, where you can mount the tablet. And a wireless keyboard for typing.

Touchpad+Touchstone+Keyboard= webOS laptop.

Monstrosity indeed! HAH!

I am looking forward to the webos tablet.

But I have a wonderful - and tiny - HP Elitebook 2740p with a very responsive touchscreen:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/321957-321957-64295-374064...

I hope that the new tablet works have as well. And when I'm on it, I'll miss the pen, which allows me to draw delicately and to take notes by hand, hit a button, and have it translated to typed text.
