App Catalog Gets Google Voice App and Much More 61

by Dieter Bohn Thu, 10 Sep 2009 9:07 pm EDT

How do you end a day that started with App Catalog controversy? You wave the magic wand of new apps and everything feels better. Palm talks about the apps on their official blog here

Actually, the best part of this new wave of apps is that it contains gDial Pro, a full-fledged Google Voice application - one that Homebrewers know well. Take that, Apple. Note that gDial Pro has a shiny new website and also remains available via our Homebrew App Gallery in an alternate form that supports full universal search or all your contacts (the App Catalog version, due to limited APIs, has more limited contact search)

Other Homebrew apps have graduated too - Simple Bible, Currency Converter, and Checkers. Congratulations Developers!!

They join Forbes, Local Concerts, Lights Out, Video Poker, 4:20 Wallpaper, and AccuRadio as today's additions to the App Catalog.

Congratulations developers! Well done!

Also, why does the App Catalog only say 50? Wasn't that the amount before these were added?

I think someone said that 50 is the max. search amount, not the total number of apps in the catalog.

Thanks!

Congratulations!!! I'm very happy to see progress... and gDial Pro... so happy to have that in!

The gdial pro on the app store does not offer universal search unlike the one the homebrew store which does. It is still available from the homebrew store and the author states it does universal search.

Now if only I could get a Google Voice account!!!

LOL! Dito!

I've got an invite if you want it.

Please!

Lets not forget that Homebrew gdial lets you search contacts with synergy the app catalog gdial only searches from your google contacts (due to API reasons just like nanplayer)

please delete this and my comment above accident clone posts

Grr, for the first time since installing it, I'm actually now reconsidering my life on the bleeding edge of 1.2...

Oh well, great to see that Palm is ramping up the App Catalog leading up to the 1.2 launch and the release of paid apps. But if anyone at Palm's reading this, maybe you could let us 1.2ers just get a sneak peek at the new Catalog, but just disable payment methods until the launch? Just wondering...

yeah and the ui makes the game almost impossible to play. How cool.

So we get something useful and you get more games. How typical.

Thanx Palm - good 2c some life stirring up in the catalog. Keep it up.

People above the age of 25?

Typo: editions should be additions

NICE!!!

Is there a way to bypass the App limit on the phone? i had to get rid of 5 apps to install new ones.

Nope not with the App Catalog. You should contact Palm and let them know you would like this to change.

Something I found that works to get around the app limit is to delete homebrew apps temporarily. After that I downloaded all the official apps I wanted then readded the homebrew apps through Preware. Downloads through Preware arent subject to a app limits except via memory.

Woo hoo checkers!

Lots of good stuff here, but disappointed in separate news apps, still. I know having them separate pads app numbers and is a little bit easier for developers, but the whole reason RSS exists is to be able to combine feeds into one application.

I love it. Apple removes iTunes sync with the Pre so what does Palm do.... They add a Google Voice Application to their official catalog!!! TAKE THAT STEVE JOBS!!

Palm wake up what is the reasoning about adding apps when we get messages not enough memory erase some apps that you have to make room. Does this make sense the apps i have from the homebrew work for me, know i have to erase them to make room for new ones. What will happen when we start paying for them

Fred

Use Preware to install homebrew apps. Preware installs them in such a way that they're not hindered by the app limit.

You can install Preware with WebOS quick install.

"in such a way that they're not hindered by the app limit."

what kind of limit does the pre has?

there is no time... my friend took him 3 months.. took me a week told a few other friends about it they got it in 3 days.... just when google has numbers to give out i guess.

you can buy invites

Congrats devs! I'm coming from the iPhone and its exciting to be able to watch not one but two great app communities begin and become successful. I have to say the App Catalog on the Pr? is much more exciting to be a part of. We may not the first in this wild frontier but I feel our community is more vibrant and certainly more open! ;) kudos!

Awesome, developers!
PreCentral's developer community is gonna rock the app catalog big time if this goes on like this!

Hopefully I'll get my two apps in soon to!

Sorry to hear that the Lights Out app wasn't the Homebrew from here.

GREAT for the other's 'though.

I see the trend now! NEW APPS EVERY THURSDAYS!!! maybe 1.2 MIGHT be released on a Thursday as well???

What I really want is no limit on the space for apps. I have over 2GB of space, but I'm out of space for apps.

Congrats devs!

- I signed up for google voice a month or so ago and got an invite within a week or so.
- me either
- don't care about poker
- don't care but travelers may need this
- some nice variety and streaming media is great in general.

The NaNplayer thing has been addressed. It uses non-public APIs that will be changed in the near future and will break the app. They have no problem with it being available in the App catalog but they have to stick to a certain standard for official apps that people expect more out of.

Apps are by nature add-ons that provide additional functionality to the core uses of a smart phone. This phone already does everything I would expect from a modern smart phone (phone, web, email, calendar, sync, streaming media, navigation, etc.) so I find it funny that people are so quick to start complaining about not having this or that little app. This stuff is great and even a few years ago this phone would have made you shit your pants with glee so maybe try to keep a little perspective.

You know you can buy a Google Voice invite for like $0.99 or less on eBay, right? I just bought 6 invites for $1.98....

same thing happened to me. just keep trying. it took me 3 or 4
times too. finally got it. it's working fine now.

oh its well worth using google voice even if it doesnt.

I'm frankly surprised that Palm approved an app with an obvious drug reference (4:20 Wallpaper). I have an app I'm working on called "rolled up hundred" where you use a razor to scrape white powder across a mirror. It's a fun game :^) (j/k)

I think there might be an issue after install of gDial Pro, after I add a new contact on the Pre, it will not sync with google contacts, and vise versa. Even when I manually sync from the Pre, the contacts will not show up in google contacts. Neither do they show up in google voice contacts. Anyone else having this issue?
