The App Catalog works again, praise be 46
by Dieter Bohn Sat, 15 May 2010 9:02 pm EDT
After what can only be described as a strange and somewhat frantic Saturday for webOS users, Palm has tweeted out that that App Catalog downloads are working again - after what looks to have been nearly 18 hours of downtime.
We'll let you know if and when we find out the root cause of the Great App Install Fail of 2010, in the meantime just be happy you can start running up the numbers of your favorite Hot App again.
Thanks to everybody who sent this in!

first.....
Cannot wait to find out what the problem was.
There is a Wells Fargo app.....
Wonder if there will ever be a Chase app?
Cisco did it. Jelous!
I want chase too. Plus e-trade and Rosetta Stone
I thought the root cause was pretty clear. lexb in the forums found this in his logs:
user.notice ApplicationInstallerUtility: Step 2.1: executing certificate verification command
user.err ApplicationInstallerUtility: Step 2.1: error: failed in runOpenSSL()
http://3.ly/IPjf (shortented b/c precentral seems to cut off the full link if given)
Others agree that it's likely a certificate thing:
http://forums.precentral.net/search.php?searchid=12782071
This would explain:
a) why setting the date back on the phone was a workaround
b) why the fix took so long - palm had to gen a new cert and then resign all 2400+ apps.
c) why some apps were fixed earlier than others. The ones that were fixed earlier were signed earlier.
the problem is they were moving the app server to HP headquarters by truck with a sprint internet dongle and hit a bump. duh.
Very funny comment. Good thing catalog is back up or new att users will be pissed and trade in their pre's for iphones or whatever else att is pushing.
Good thing it's back up in time for the AT&T launch. Palm already needs all the help it can get.
Good luck tomorrow Palm!
Anyone noticed Verizon's advertisement for palm pre is all gone. Its no longer on Verizon's front page.
just downloaded and updated apps that I had trouble with in the morning :)
A guy I'm in grad school with works at Chase corporate. He mentioned a month or two ago that a company memo was released saying apps were in process for all platforms - not just the iphone.
I'm anxious for it too... No timeline though...
do we think palm will tell us what was wron? I think they owe us that...
grrr. Every time I refresh this page it double posts! Why?
Okay, so maybe it is working but whatever caused this has made my phone drop my Palm Profile TWICE in the last couple of hours meaning my phone did about a partial erase and will have had to download all 30 catalog apps TWICE, not to mention my Homebrew patches and apps.
Well done. The fix was quick
So glad I have google sync, though it was disheartening to say the least, I did lose pics, but nothing else, thanks to google sync.btw I did have to remove and then add my email accounts to get them to download properly.
Some one rolled back to April and then came back to actual date. How it worked for you?. Thanks
or Can we now change the date to the correct date - or would it be better to keep it in April for a few more days to be on the safe side
I wonder if Palm was fiddling around with their servers in preparation for the AT&T release. Not that people are going to be fighting over being first in line. I called a few AT&T stores and most reps had no clue what was going on. Way to launch a phone. What pisses me off more is that when you call an AT&T store the first thing you hear is "Thank you for calling AT&T, home of the iPhone 3GS"
Good luck tomorrow Palm. I am finally upgrading my Centro to a PPP. The store opens at 11. I will be in the parking lot at 1030. And I already have one touchstone charger, but I don't mind having another one for free.
I simply could not help myself. I
I keep a lot of notes that were on some apps.
All of that information is gone. As a writer, it totally screwed me.
I'm a big fan of WebOS but extremely pissed off.
It's called 'backing up'. If you don't do it, you have no one to blame but yourself.
Where do I find the pres backup function? With my elder Treo and Palm OS I made a hotsync and got my data back. I also could use some backup apps that stored the data on my sd-card. How do you back up your "classic notes" or all your unbilled (BillMytime) bills? How do you backup the information of your "Brain Trainer" or your Teal Speed List? I mean, some data can be backuped by e-mail, some data might be backed up through a backup of the pres`memory in usb-mode. But all that is not a reliable, convenient and integrated backup-functionality right out of the box. In my opinion a palm had always been an easy to use reliable buiseness-tool. The pre seems to be nice for surfing, mailing and gaming. It`s a Pre and not a Palm. I`m a bit disappointed.
Check out Save/Restore from webos-internals. It backs up your app data to the media partition where you can copy it to your computer. It supports ClassicNote among others and support for new apps is added regularly.
Thanks, asshole. Sometimes one doesn't have time, as I didn't on Friday after a late meeting with my producer. I guess I'll learn to back up every hour or buy a new phone.
Sorry to hear that. If you can't jog your memory, you can at least get in touch with your producer again. As excuses go, "worldwide infrastructure failure" of a third party is easier to pass than, "the dog ate my PDA".
Sorry you lost your data. I know it sucks, but try to remember that no device is safe. No matter what phone, computer, flash drive, mp3 player, etc..., you have, you should always regularly back-up data that is critical to you. I learned that lessons many years ago. Losing your data isn't 100% Palm's fault, and blaming them is just another way to pass on the responsibility (which is yours, by the way).
What if you had dropped your Pre in water and all your data was lost? Would you still blame Palm? As I tell anyone who keeps critical data in just one place...that data, and it's possible loss, is your responsibility and only yours. I know this doesn't make it easier for you, but look at this as a wisdom builder.
No problem, I thought you might like some cheese to go with all that whine. I'm sure your 'producer' will be thrilled to get whatever new script you were working on.
Thanks. Good luck with the whole being a piece of shit thing.
Good job Palm on the super quick fix. I don't care what people say or think about Palm...nobody has better support for their customers. Everyone, we have gotten everything Palm has promised...and yes some of those things are still absent (i.e. 'native' mic functions, Flash 10.1, PDK Apps, etc) but they're in the works so we webOS users should be grateful.
For those wanting Flash - the Evo releases June 4th w/ Flash 10.1 running, so webOS should actually be awaiting something before June 4th or roughly the same time. Be ready ;)
Pixi users will not want to miss the next webOS update as it will open up the true potential of the little booger. Contrary to what people say...the only compatibility issue of true PDK/3D Apps has to do with screen resolution and NOT power of the Pixi. Remember, amazing things come in small packages ;)
I'm excited for tomorrow's AT&T launch of the Palm Pre Plus. I've told all my buddies (who are on the carrier) about webOS and what it's capable of and they're intrigued. They are soooo onboard =]
...I can't wait until H/Palm leaks the new device(s) for the remainder 2010. I think it will be soon after the AT&T launch. I'm excited much.
Go Sprint.
Go Palm.
Go HP.
Go webOS.
Um, I kinda remember Palm promising Flash with the initial release last June. It was one of the main reasons I bought a Pre & was supposed to be a game changer of sorts in the smart phone industry. Then they told us "end of 2009", then "first half of 2010", now they've been saying "end of 2010" since Jan. My dad has a droid & can watch hd flip videos on it & I can't on my Pre because it needs a flash player. I'm patient but it sucks we've been misled, actually more like flat out LIED TO basically since the Adobe/Palm Flash release announcement Feb 2009. It is Adobe's baby & I'm not JUST blaming Palm but I will not be surprised if June 4th comes & goes & STILL NO FLASH!!!!!
"not JUST blaming Palm"? How is it Palm's fault in any way? Guess what, it's not. The only way it's palm's fault is they were gullible enough to believe anything Adobe said. The whole thing is on Adobe, period.
How about their "exclusive partnership" for the launch? Palm had to know ahead of time that Flash wasn't ready. You're saying nobody diliberatley witheld that info until they sold some phones? I find that hard to believe and tend to think this seems more like a shell game now because I keep hearing Flash will launch with this new device or that one. It's all an evil plot to sell phones on launch day then string us along with empty promises & broken dreams. How about advertising Sirius in all the prelaunch literature as well? I felt like I'd been had when Jan rolled around this year and none of these promises have come close to materializing. Palm DOES share blame for not being honest about their implied exclusitivity with Adobe which apparently doesn't exist. Don't get me wrong... LOVE my Pre. I just would appreciate a little more integrity with these partnerships when it comes to launch dates. 13 months later than promised on a competeting device is ridiculous.
I can't wait till the prime gets leaked!
well great! glad to hear Palm is patching things up nicely :)
I finally persuaded someone to get a Pre Plus from Verizon on Friday when her dumb phone accidentally got flushed away, so I'm nervous hoping she'll love it as much as I do. Then this app glitch happened, so I had to calll her to tell her not to try to download any apps yet--not a confidence-building way to start off! But tho she chose it because of the price apparently more than from my endorsement, I do have high hopes that she'll thank me once she gets spoiled by having not only A smart phone, but THE BEST smartphone of all, bar none.
Whew! Thanks! I did the EMH like 3 times before I left it alone.
uhm..hi..excuse me
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THIS?

inquiring wordpress users would like to know >.>
Take a look at Poster in the app catalog. It lets you edit text & images with a rich editor. It will let you maintain multiple blogs. It's $1.99.
Might also want to look at Pixelpipe - free in Preware & $0.99 in app catalog for the same version. Definitely looks more bare bones than Poster, but, hey, it's free
Well, it's works for most people, but my catalog is still not working. All my apps can't be download, or install. It looks like, it's working radomly, but not for the masses. Boomer!
On the fence...... Stick with Palm (love the phone but is a year or two away from getting everything in the phone I want) or jump ship and get the HTC EVO 4g (which has a ton more) ? ? ?
I still love you!
The only data I lost was data I was too lazy to back up. The apps in question had built-in data backup schemes that I was too busy/lazy to implement. Lesson learned. Other than that, all my other info was still on board.
I lost 2 things, my messaging in my phone, I have the back up of it, via html files produced my save/restore, just can't get it back into the device.
The other was my saved launcher pages, had about 10 or 12.
My downlaods/updates still not responding!
why my appstore is still not working? And my pre gsm is 1.4.1.
Phew, it's working again. All those AT&T users can now download the same apps as their iPhone has!!!!!!!!!
