App Preview: Quick Post [video] 14

by Derek Kessler Wed, 13 Apr 2011 10:06 am EDT

Dan Perlberger of HedamiSoft is a busy guy. Not only has he released GeoStrings and Music Player (Remix) into the App Catalog, he’s busy working on a new app called Quick Post. The concept behind Quick Post is pretty simple: quickly post messages to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. What makes Quick Post stand out is its myriad features.

For one, you can have as many Twitter and Facebook accounts as you like in Quick Post, and you can easily select which accounts you want to post to, including the option to set default accounts (yes, multiple). Quick Post has a lot of smart features, like separate character counters for Twitter and Facebook posts, even if the same message is going to both services. And if you happen to go over that 140 character limit on Twitter (far too easy, if we might say), Quick Post can automagically compress your message length with url shortening from bit.ly and abbreviation a txt-speak converter 140it. If it turns out that the post simply can’t be compressed enough, Quick Post will spit the message into multiple posts with inserted X/X counters.

In addition to all of these features, Quick Post has some pretty slick webOS 2.0 integration in the form of Just Type Quick Actions. For each of your accounts you can set a shortcut (a few letters) that the Quick Post Quick Action will recognize and post your message to those accounts. Unlike with Palm’s official Facebook app, where the Quick Action merely pastes your text into the status box and you still have to tap that Update button, Quick Post does it automatically and in the background.

Quick Post is still a work in progress, with plenty to still come. For a simple concept, Perlberger has put a lot of thought into the little parts that make the difference. And now we can’t wait for QuickPost to come out! Check out the preview video of Quick Post after the break.

Great, only if we can get some hardware now

Thanks for posting the preview of Quick Post! It should be ready to release soon. Most of the app is complete.

If you'd like to discuss the app, please come by the forum thread: http://forums.precentral.net/hedami/280497-quick-post-twitter-facebook-p...

The only thing that may hold up the release is an issue with the Palm app submission site. They made a change recently to force apps to set the "min OS version" to 2.0 if it uses any 2.0 features including Just Type.

The app works perfectly on 1.4.5 (except Just type of course), so HP really needs to fix this issue because there are a lot of devs being impacted by it. There's a thread on the Palm Dev forums discussing the issue: https://developer.palm.com/distribution/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=12182

This app looks awesome! Can't wait to purchase the Pre3, so I can get this app! Awesome job, Dan Perlberger! Quick Post is now on my "Must-Have" applications list!

Assuming HP fixes their app submission site (see my previous comment for details), the app will be submitted for webOS 1.x devices as well. So no need to wait for the Pre 3! It'll work fine on all webOS devices including the Pixi!

On webOS 1.x, you still have all the benefits of the app (multiple accounts, message compression and auto-splitting, etc.), but you'll just need to launch the app to post instead of "just typing". But I have to admit, the "just typing" piece (coupled with the multiple account support and message compression/splitting) is what really makes it magical. No other mobile OS can come close to this seamless experience.

This is awesome!!! Thanks for all your hard work!

It looks nice and all, but as a basic feature set, doesn't Pixelpipe already do this? In fact, it will post to more than just facebook and twitter - blog posts, etc. Just seems more flexible. Can't wait to see what other features are added to Quick Post, though, that may set it apart. Would be nice if Quick Post could add a feature to quickly add a calendar entry with alarm as well... ;-) Nothing out there does this well, other than going straight into the calendar and manually entering it. #justsaying

@headgamer: I'm not that familiar with Pixelpipe. Does it perform automatic message compression and splitting so you don't have to waste time trying to cram your thoughts into the char limits? Does it allow you to post to multiple accounts from Just Type using shortcuts and no in-app interaction? Can you set up multiple default accounts to quickly send messages to?

If the answer to any of those questions is no, then that would be how Quick Post is different. "Quick" is the keyword in the app title. It's all about posting your thoughts quickly and without having to worry about posting logistics.

bye bye Ping and kwiry for status'

hmmm... "a" defaults to post to all accounts? what if i posted "a great interview! hope i get the job!"

gotta change that.. maybe a- instead of just a

@BAUERMUNDO Wow good point...I can't believe I didn't think of that. I'll change it.

EDIT: I think I'll use "z" as the "post to all accounts" shortcut. I'd like to keep this shortcut as a single character and "z" is right below "a" on the keyboard, so why not? :)

This is exactly why I love WeBos! Seamless seamless seamless!!
I'm running 2.1 on my Pre- so I'll get it either way. Although I agree 1.x should be able to use many of the apps I have seen in 2.x. Hey HP help out your devs! They are the reason we are all here! Trust me it's not the hardware... yet!

What a quality and useful app. When i come back to webos, i hope very soon, with my new pre3 & TP, this app, Music Player Remix and GeoStrings are definitely some of my must have apps. I don't care how much they cost, just make quality and useful apps and keep up with the updates and i will buy them. Keep up the great work.

I've posted a new video demonstrating 3 new features in Quick Post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJdghrHYffA

The new features include:

- Message queuing when there is no internet connection. Messages are automatically re-sent when the internet connection is restored.

- Auto drafting to save the message and destination accounts for a later time.

- Unicode compression to replace certain two and three letter groups with one unicode character.

Quick Post has just been submitted to the app catalog! It'll be available for $1.50.

Here's the intro video that will be posted in the catalog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnj6dN3b_IU
