App Spotlight: Time Tracker 9

by Robert Werlinger Tue, 08 Dec 2009 11:37 am EST

Freelancers and independent contractors should be delighted by the recent appearance of time tracking applications in both homebrew and official App Catalog forms.  One such app is Time Tracker developed by reinfrom AG. As the name suggests, the application allows you to keep track of how much time you're spending on various tasks and projects throughout the day, log that information, and email the results for inclusion in spreadsheets and invoices.  The forthcoming Pro version of the software promises the ability to start tracking your time based on your location, utilizing GPS, which will be a slick feature indeed.

The Time Tracker can currently only be downloaded in trial form from the homebrew section , as the Pro version of the software has yet to be released into the App Catalog.  A similar app, TimeBits, can be found in the Catalog for $4.99 and offers a similar experience over all. Using utilities like this on the phone makes perfect sense - its the one device you have with you practically 24/7, and doubly so when tasks can be activated using GPS.

Does it show a graph for weeks/months/year for the time for each task? Plus if the task goes past midnight, do you have to re-enter it?

Ohh. Finally a way to easily track how much time I spend lurking around precentral.net

Now only if they could fix the bug introduced in 1.3.1 that makes the pre go to sleep regardless of whether it is on the touchstone or not.

I currently use the stopwatch to keep track of my time, but I can't check on it "at a glance" because it's always going to sleep!

TimeTracker has no problem, when the palm goes to sleep. It even records time, when it is switched off. This is done by storing time stamps into a database which has to be done only at "start" or "stop" time. So you could easily exit TimeTracker and still it will record time... :-)

And yes, it draws a graph of the time you are working. There is no problem with timing over midnight because the time stamps are still valid because they contain date and time.

That's a smart capability to have in TimeTracker -- regarding the sleep complaint, it's not necessarily that I lose time, but that I'm not able to quickly look at my device and quickly assess how much time I'm spending on something because the device is asleep! (This is out of the developer's hands though)

I'll have to give the program a closer look though, because as a young attorney, keeping track of my time ends up being one of the most important things I need to do!

There is one other app similar to Time Tracker and TimeBits in the app catalog called Time Spent (http://timespent.orgorganization.com). It costs $2.99 and has a 5 star rating.

Halcyon,

Indeed. I think it's time for a review faceoff!

Awesome, I'm a web designer, and want to try this. As long as the data is stored on a server and not on the Pre this should be great. Time should be editable for those of us who forget to start and stop. Hoping for a web interface for this as well.

This is such a great application to use. I love something that will keep track of your time. I just love it.
