Asphalt 5

So, you want to know if the Pre and Pre Plus can really handle 3D gaming with aplomb, but don’t feel like forking over the cash to find out for sure? Gameloft has an answer for you, and it comes in the form of a demo version of the excellent racing game Asphalt 5. Available for free from the App Catalog, Asphalt 5 Free gives you a few minutes of play on a full functional track. Weighing in at nearly 66 MB, you can be sure you’re getting a full experience, though it is still limited to a few minutes with no save functionality. And of course, if you like what you see, Asphalt 5 Free comes with a link straight to the App Catalog where you can part with $6.99 (plus applicable taxes) for the full game.

Still downloading :) Did anybody try that Mechwarrior type game from Laminar yet?

Laminar didn't even bother changing the game description.
It says "best combat sim game for the iPhone" or something similar and not in a comparative way...

first!!! Downloading now :)

nvm you beat me to it :(

Nelson Muntz : "Ha ha!!!!"

woohoo, finally get to test out some 3D gaming on my pre without having to spend a week of my allowance. :) (just playing I'm married and 28, but still nice to see what the phone can do without having to spend a $6)

Wow. $6/week is pretty good allowance for a young, married bloke. Does she let you drive the car too? ; )

great!

I'm not able to download the full versions due to not having access to a credit card (paying off debt, with my mom's help). But this is great, cause I wanted to see how well the new games looked and ran. This should hold my interest until I can get my cards paid off and get them back so I can actually buy Need For Speed and Assassin's Creed. I can't wait.

Asphalt 5 is supposedly better. Just Sayin.

Either way, I'm interested in trying it out. For all I know, the demo could blow my socks off and I'd never want to play any other game.

@sth fatal - lol probably by seconds :)

FINALLY!!! I think all apps should have a trial version. I'm not parting with $5-10 to figure out if the app is cr-app or not.

Thank You to the developers of this game. I might actually buy it now....depending on how i like the gameplay.

I 2nd that comment.

Im downloading the game as i type lol =P
If i like it i might buy it
I also think they should do this for more games..That way we get a test drive of the games before we spend the cash =P

Even though it is free, it still doesn't show up in the Canadian App Catalog. I was really hoping this would be my chance to try out a 3D game. I guess I'll continue waiting...

I must say i'm very impressed the game play is up there if not better than iphone.

umm, uh huh

Not bad. You have your choice of an Audi TT or a Nissan Z.

One track, one and a half laps. There's some rooftop action if you veer off course at the right spot.

I hope other developers are taking note....i havent purchased any 3D games yet but if this game is of good quality i'll be making my first purchase today!

forever to install!!!

this game is bought today and I saw a video for the Lets Golf game that look nice as well. I will be glad when Gameloft ports over all of there iphone games. Actually Gameloft hurry on up.

i prefer need for speed for the graphics and the story line. this seems to be a more user friendly app with ease of use and no gestures to memorize.

Crap... Not available in Canada... how come it's always like this with Bell !!!!!!!!! No paid apps! Not access to trial version!!!! etc...

I, for one, would like to know why the hell this isn't available in Canada. Why are we getting treated this way? And Bell/Palm wonder why the Pre isn't popular here in Canada? Why do they have to try and sell them off at $0 on a plan? Because of crap like this.

New Plus owner here, used to be BB Storm, used to be 700p user. Hadn't kept too close tabs on the Pre until very recently leading up to the release. Just wanted to comment that on the Plus, this demo works terrific. Also was able to pause, open the phone, email, messaging, and load a web page from scratch, then unpause the race without missing a beat.

Very impressed and happy to be back on Palm.

Nice grapics, very smooth play. Short demo but definitely have to look pretty seriously at buying!

Rats... just bought the full version of Asphalt 5 last nite. But this trial would have been better for my young kids to play, since i'm not much of a gamer. That said, it's a fun game with impressive graphics. Runs smooth on my unpatched Sprint Pre, no glitches or crashes. One thing the forums recommend and i second:
1. find some solid time with a good connection to download and install. prob took about 20 min total on a wifi connection last nite.
2. before you download, I would: update, then download, update again just in case, then do a restart (pop the battery even), then open the game. may seem like overkill, but maybe it helps.

ThankYou Gameloft:) Im downloading

Thou who asks
Thou who recieves

By the way it took 8 minutes 53 seconds to download over EVDO for me. Not too bad for a 60+ MB file.

Plays smoothly on my pre !
i wanna buy :)

Anyone got this outside US ?

NO... it really sucks, in Canada

and UK !!!!

... so does Germany. :-(

I genuinely feel really bad for folks outside the US who can't get these apps. I wish there was something those of us stateside could do to help. I wouldn't have the same patience you all have shown in sticking with the platform.

They could have released the demo outside US at least :(

hmmm maybe i'll look up the files inside my phone for the demo and share them?

Ok so whoever wants to try the Asphalt 5 Demo v1.07 (playable 3 minute Demo) download from the following link. If you've updated your Asphalt 5 to v1.08 you find that you cannot play the game anymore because they want you to buy it.

Download here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2N702RN8
Virus free, password free.

*****For the rest of the world and for the ones who updated to v1.08, installation via Terminal and Quick install, with very detailed step-by-step instructions.

Works fine on my German Pre, thank you very much!

ty dude, it works on my german pp, too :)

I'm currently in eastern Europe on a trip, and with the US Sprint phone (of course over Wifi) I was able to get the app (which is just awesome by the way). I wonder how you could trick your phone to download the USA apps... because it doesn't matter what location you're in, but rather what country that phone belongs to.

I would like to request anyone who is going to purchase Asphalt 5, please, PLEASE download and install this first!!

Obviously not for any technical reason, but if we can show developers that those who download the demo version are more apt to purchase the full version, perhaps we will get more and more demo versions (and thus avoiding purchasing apps that we end up never using because of their quality).

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Buying something that you never end up using is basically the worst.

My biggest flop ever was buying a $700 body kit for my car (came to over $800 after shipping), and then a tree fell on my car before it even arrived and they wouldn't take it back. So, I put it outside (because I had no room for it) and snow falling off the roof destroyed it. Thus, I couldn't resell it in any form, and lost over $800.

So, even trivial $5 games and apps on my phone get my attention. I'd rather try it, then decide if it's worth the money.

Sounds like God was trying to tell you something about body-kits. ;)

Yea yea, lol.. I gave up on that stuff. I have a Buick now, so sprucing it up seems kind of useless. I do like the idea of rigging up a Touchstone in my car to hold my Pre. That's at least a lot cheaper than body modifications.

If there is no demo becz of quality issues, the dev is not going to let you peek regardless of how many times a demo is downloaded.

It may be better to encourage devs to have one app entry in the catalog that has a time expiration, if not paid.

what about europe? are we getting it too? hope so...

I suppose that Europe has to wait until March. Actually there are no paid programs available in the German App Store, even no demo versions. :-(

Too bad you can only play it 3 times before you have to go for the full version.

not in uk :-(

This game is good enough to buy up front IMO. Instead of putting free trails int he catalog, it needs to have the feature to try that app within a timeperiod/use and then prompt for payment/deletion. SOOO much more logical.

This is unbelieveable, thought we could at least get free apps in UK

The game completely froze my device. It's stuck on the loading screen, and is not responsive at all. Tried rebooting, and connecting via webosquickinstall, nothing.

Yep, completely frozen up here. Yikes.

Can't access the App Store using WiFi!??!

What gives?

it looks and plays nice but:
1. It gave me the "Too Many Cards Open Error", and I only had the Txt Messaging App opened.
2. It rebooted my phone when I exited the game. Played the demo about 3 times through out the day before this happened. :-(

OK, once again, I can't run an app... Scrabble won't open, now this. The icon highlights, then dehighlights, and that's it. Anyone have a suggestion?

I only have 1/2 GB out of the 8GB left on the USB partition of my Sprint-based Palm Pre. I have tons of apps (homebrew and app catalog) and patches installed. No themes.

I rebooted, downloaded the demo, and launched.

It played beautifully. I already have Need For Speed which I love, but Asphault 5 is a bit easier to drive. The turbo is much easier to engage versus the upswipe I have to sometimes do multiple times on NFS.

I wouldn't have even considered buying this since I already have NFS, but the demo convinced me otherwise. Hats off to Gameloft.

No asphalt here in the Netherlands (O2 GSM on Vodafone):-(

I NEED HELP PLEASE!!! Every time I try to download an app, I get a message saying I need to reset the phone to complete installation, and when I do so, I get another message saying INSTALL FAILED . Not just this app, but for any app I try to downlaod. What do I need to do? CAN SOMEONE HELP HERE PLEASE?

let me also add that I don't have this problem installing homebrew apps through Preware, only apps from the Palm app catalogue.

I tried it out and I really like the game. I think I'm going to purchase it.

I have 2 Pres: one is launch day, the other I got just before new year (came with 1.2.1 preinstalled and feels actually much more solid) and neither of them can run NFSU even in virgin condition. Crashing all the time!

so I have no intention of spending $ anymore until I'm absolutely sure a game will work.

and now finally I can give another game a chance. Smart move.

so, let me understand. We here in Canada are not even allowed to try the demo of the 3d games? I'm not sure who is responsible but I'm getting pretty upset at this treatment.

cmon Bell treat us like you care.

They just updated it for only allowing you to use it once, then it's just a waste of space.

Got to play it 3 times, then poof, no more plays. Just a link to buy. Too bad they didn't mention that up front.

It was pretty cool, tho. When I get real desperate for a game, this will be my first buy.

Would you have not downloaded it if they said that up front? It's a demo, after playing three times I think you could easily make a decision if you want to play it more. Once played the price decision becomes easy.

I for one had been holding out on the 3D games. Didn't think they would be that wonderful, after playing this, I think I will admit I was wrong!

if you are technical about the definition, it's a trial, not a demo. I would have downloaded it either way, but my expectations were not met, so I was disappointed. I was not expecting a trial.

not a big deal. I'm not that into games. It was fun while it lasted.

Can't even download the frickin demo in the UK. How sad is that!

Ok so ive been reading here and seems only usa can get it. Im in Canada Bell and I cant find any of these 3d games other then quake and doom. If there free demo's can someone please upload the files somewhere so I can put it on my Bell pre. This is stupid that we can't get it easily enough

The game only allows you 3 plays then it only displays purchase. But you can erase the game and download it again and play it 3 more times. Is this a sneaky way of Sprint or Palm having GameLoft getting their download numbers up to show that people are really interested in this game? It is a good game, I may just buy it instead of continuing to download it after my 3 tries are up.

Played the demo a few times and bought the full version... I like it better than NFSU. More variety and choices of play as opposed to having to do a series of "missions". Also missing compared to NFS is the annoying "slow down to a crawl" when you drive on the edge of the road (maybe it's off the road, hard to tell)

For the people that can't get it to run, I dunno, I didn't even reboot the phone after downloading it and ran it a few times without a burp.

And in case nobody was paying any attention to the app catalog or this article, it is a limited demo version for free... obviously, the $6.99 Asphalt 5, also in the app catatlog would be the full version. This is not the first time we have seen paid=full and free=demo/trial/limited in the app catalog.

Cool, something for us European guys to show off, for a few minutes anyway. I don't see it in the App Catalog though. Still, looking forward to it.

the download was pretty quick, but when I try to luanch it from the app store it says that I have to many cards open. When I didn't have any open and when I try to start it directly from the launcher menu it never starts. What should I try?
