AT&T 'Practice Palm Pre Plus' unboxed 44
Remember those 'practice' Palm Pre Plus phones that were rumored to be heading to AT&T employees? Well, they've clearly arrived, as BGR has an unboxing of the device.
We'd like to say that there are stunning and amazing surprises to be found within the unboxing gallery, but for Palm Pre faithful it's pretty much what you'd expect: the Palm Pre Plus with an AT&T logo on the back. The box has all the typical warnings and provisos - keep that phone away from children!
Unfortunately, BGR notes that the ROM on the device doesn't appear to be fully-baked yet, having rebooted itself a couple times within the first hour. It's definitely not fair to judge based on a pre-release device, though, so let's not panic.
Thanks to everybody who sent this in!

Im about to go into the ATT store and teach class.. first lesson.. how to apply the 800mhz patch!
lets just do that to every phone then re-package them. they'll sell like hot cakes.
No doubt they will be like "hot" cakes.
I have the 800Mhz patch ( or at leat I think it applied) and I can honestly say I don't see a discernable difference.
As has been noted before, you must not have installed it correctly, as the patch brings significantly faster loading/boot-up times.
it's not going to be like a 1ghz,what you'll notice more is the smoothes in touch, card some cards appear faster than others, and when you go on the web it does load a lot faster. In time you'll notice it,give the processor time to adapt. If you want.... what you could do is, after a while go back to the stock 500mhz and judge for yourself.
then you must not have it installed haha
I think they mean regarding heat, in which case there is no discernible difference. I had no problems with heat before/after the 800Mhz patch was applied AND removed (so I can enjoy 1.4.1.1 and until they have the ipk version)
Well, after updating to 1.4.1, I don't need the 800 MHz patch anymore. The battery drain was quite high on my phone and the difference between 1.4.0 patched and 1.4.1 unpatched is only marginal. Good work, Palm!
lol
You must have not installed it correctly. 800MHz patch makes the Pre a different phone.
i think the phones have 1.4.0 :D
"UPDATE: Our source just said this phone has rebooted on them twice in the first hour of use. Awesomeness."
That's not a good sign.
Do phones reboot when the wireless signal drops? Consider the network and it's history.
I doubt the phone "rebooted", it probably restarted Luna. I have been having problems with occasional Luna restarts ever since 1.4.0, and it (unfortunately) continues with 1.4.1.1. Prior to 1.4.0, I had been using the phone almost 9 months and never had a spontaneous Luna restart (or reboot for that matter).
I "notest" that they are planning a tutorial online.
BGR? Knock the Palm Pre Plus? *Shocked face*
please put te Pre vs Droid article back on top!!!:
BGR would say that even if it's not true....
Stopped reading BGR. Sticking with PreCentral and Giz.
used to read giz alot, but not right now, its plasterd with ipad news...
and Engadet, natch.
reboots are not a good sign :/. I remember that I use to have the reboot every 10 min I fixed my battery size(which was too small). Once that was fixed only about 2wice a day. Now with the 800 mhz never again :). My phone feels so alive!
I completely understand that this is a pre-release device. However, reboots are actually really bad in this case.
While it's nice that Palm is providing early devices for AT&T people to train with, the individual AT&T worker will decide for him/herself whether to push the Pre Plus or another device.
If the salesperson's experience with the device during training is a lot of reboots, he probably won't be nearly as likely to recommend the device.
If the rom isnt "fully baked" then does that mean that the release date might be past may?
All that means is that it is using an Alpha or Beta version of webOS (which would be surprising considering pre-release versions are under NDA).
Does anyone else notice in the pictures that the back cover doesn't seem shiny like the normal back or is it just me?
pre plus come with the touchstone back cover.
I think it's the Touchstone back.
The main photo for this article makes it look like the Pre's in hard plastic packaging to be hung by a cash register as an impulse buy.
Yeah, reboots are not the way to make a good first impression with the person who will be selling the phone. Palm never seems to get it just right. They have the creative engineering, now the attention is on marketing and preparing the sales people. Next, they need to figure out how to get to the six sigma defect rate.
So Palm Pre Plus is not exclusive to Verizon anymore... Why oh why then we the early adopters of Palm Pre still have to live with all the wobbling, oreoing, power button broken, screen cracked phones at Sprint ? I went to Sprint Store to replace my first refurbished replacement because it had the wobble and store manager told me that all their stocks would have the same problem as Palm never sent them any revised phones as they promised they would. Why treat Sprint customers as second grade when you can send this same phone which has proven to have no major hardware issues to Sprint as well ?
umm one pre plus reboots and that means every vers will?
>having rebooted itself a couple times within the first hour.
I doubt the phone "rebooted", it probably restarted Luna (a phone reboot will take several minutes, a Luna restart will take around 1 min or less). I have been having problems with occasional Luna restarts ever since 1.4.0, and it (unfortunately) continues with 1.4.1.1. Prior to 1.4.0, I had been using the phone almost 9 months and never had a spontaneous Luna restart (or reboot for that matter).
A web dr fixed my luna restart problem.
umm one pre plus reboots and that means every vers will?
So I got my hands on the at&t palm pre plus. Is it me or the battery life on the pre plus short compared to.. say.. an iphone or blackberry 9700. Awesome screen, very colorful, and the pre have not rebooted since I powered it up 24 hours ago, maybe I didn't do an extensive test as BGR. Anyway, first pre I ever use, so i'm still getting used to it. If anyone have a question about the device, let me know.
Sweet, I've been looking into switching to this from my iPhone. How is the page rendering in comparison? How is the reception and speed? You also stated the battery is worse, is it alot wors or a little? How is the media player? The mail app? Is the keyboard clicky like the pixi or is it gummy like the sprint pre? Sorry for all the questions, just really excited about this devise.
I'm no expert and have never use a Pixi or Pre before. So i went out and test the verizon pre plus. It virtually the same. So you may want to visit a verizon store and check it out. I don't know if the battery on cdma is any better or worse than GSM. The keyboard is small for me, I wish the pre slide out the other way so it can get bigger keys and wide screen mode when typing.
For me the pre multitask is nice feature. It makes going into different app quick. The web feels very similar to the iphone, it's pretty quick, although the smaller pre screen it take getting used to compare to iphone. Flash is still missing, adobe mention coming in first half of 2010. I didn't have any mp4 or divx to play with, but youtube was quick and looks awesome. And the speaker is louder on the pre than on the iphone, definite plus.
Reception... well that depends on who you speak to. I would have to say the blackberry 9700 kicks butt when it comes to reception, beating both iphone and pre.
Mail app, my only complaint was exchange server 2003 does not do HTML, but POP3 does. On the other hand iphone does HTML on both.
Apps and more apps, this is on the the thing iphone has over the pre. You can't beat the selection on the iphone. But i'm sure when the Pre makes it more mainstream, apps will start to flow in.
cool, thanks. i'll definately be checking it out when its released.
Btw does anyone know if there is a fix on the pre plus for exchange 2003 to do HTML email? This is a must have feature for me.
Hmmmm, Is that the reflection of an Iphone taking the picture? At least the owner found a good use for it.
So I went to a Verizon store to help my friend purchase a new cellphone -the last time she had bought one was when her now 24 year old daughter was in high school. She was thinking Droid or Palm Pre. She had done a bit of research. When we walked into the Verizon store, the manager was very helpful. However, she the manager never, I mean never, mentiioned the Pre...and on top of that when I asked if she had one she could demonstrate to my friend she nearly snarled with disgust. But she was eager to bring out her personal Motorola Droid and show it off...my friend bit...she bought the Droid.
If palm was smart they would send a real free phones to every person who sells their phones at the store level. I worked for a company for many years selling wireless phone and the first question customers ask is, "What phone do you have?" 60% of the time, that's the phone they walked out with.
