Bell performs unlimited data plannectomy 18

by Derek Kessler Thu, 05 Nov 2009 7:13 pm EST

Palm Pre on Bell Bell used to have some pretty sweet plans for you Canadian Pre owners, as in unlimited data. But with the launch of their new GSM network and the arrival of the iPhone, Bell has stopped offering unlimited data plans, like rival carriers Rogers and Telus. The new plans range from $45 for 500 MB of data a month (seriously) plus a few options of minutes vs. texts up to $100 a month for 2 GB (again with options for minutes and text). The available plans are more expensive than the options from Rogers and Telus, who both offer plans around $100 with 3 GB of data; users on Rogers can opt to pay $20 more for a total of 5 GB of data.

Existing Bell subscribers should be able to continue using their current plans until their contracts expire. What happens then we don’t anticipate being pretty.

Thanks to human-cannonball for the heads up!

It's probably because they offer tethering on their Pre.

Wow. That's pretty incredible. I'm paying less than USD 60 for what amounts to unlimited everything (450 min to land lines and 800 #s but really, who still uses a landline) on Sprint.

I'm going to treasure my unlimited plan forever...

Wow, I'm so glad to be on Sprint, last month I used 4G (no tethering, just on the phone).

The good news is that their contracts won't expire for another 3 years!

Except contracts don't guarantee price protection. Back then in earlier contracts there's such a clause, but it's gone since.

It would be a PR nightmare if they went around changing the prices in 3-year contracts though.

Wouh, with o2 in Germany you pay (converted) 14$ for a unlimited data plan and you're able to tether!

I would be much more interested if they started offering a HSPA version of the Pre to go with their network. I'd go as far as switching to Bell to get it.

If anything Palm should get rid of Bell's exclusitivity or at least get Bell switch to the HSPA version. It's not very convincing to sell a Pre when they are going to phase out the network it runs on some time down the road.

The EVDO net will be with us a very long time. Bell didn't even drop their Analogue service until 8 years after they had switched to digital. As long as there are a significant number of EVDO or less phones out there, the network will stay.

the EVDO network will stay probably until at least the transition to LTE in 2012.

I'm thinking this is Bell trying to soak as much money out of the new iPhone users (which became available to Bell yesterday) and it'll go back to unlimited once the excitement dies down.

Thank you very much actually I was looking for something like this!

Does the option of reducing the download speed exists over there?

Here in Spain they play with that, I'm on a 10

No, so far we don't have anything like that. The best "innovation" that the Canadian carriers have been able to come up with are the Rogers flexible data plans so that you pay an initial $5 more per month ($25-30) to receive maybe 500Mb, and then after you use maybe 1.1 Gb, your pricing jumps to $60 for the month, paying the same price as for 3Gb.

I'm on O2-UK and pay

i'm so glad i got my unlimited data plan for $45 when I did. Woot

Thank god I signed up early. For $64 I get unlimited data, unlimited txt, 450 daytime minutes, unlimited extended evenings and weekends, and whole lot of other features for free haha. I got complains.

Oh and they keep giving me random discounts out of the ying yang lol this month they took off $32 for no reason.
