Box Mobile Developer Challenge offering $35,000 cash, HP TouchPads and other prizes for the best mobile apps 39
If you're a mobile app developer for webOS (or any other major platform) looking to make it big, or even just wanting to get a free HP TouchPad, this contest from Box.net (the same company that's giving 50GB of free cloud storage to all TouchPad owners) might be the ticket for you. The company, along with HP, AT&T, Verizon, InMobi and others, is giving away $35,000 in cash prizes, as well as advertising credit through InMobi, pitch meetings with venture capitol firm Draper Fisher Juvetson, and 10 free HP TouchPads. But it's gonna be a lot of competition to get in - only the top 10 apps built between now and September 9th will get a slice of that pie.
To win, you'll first want to know what the judges will be looking for in the apps that are submitted. Using the Box.net framework, and showing an aptitude for building apps that are both useful and ingenius, prize winners will be the creators of applications that go beyond simply managing files or performing simple tasks on a device. Instead they're looking for apps that make the lives of professionals in all fields, including your own, more efficient. To quote from the contest website:
We're looking for the next generation of enterprise-grade mobile applications that will enable workers to be as productive in the field as they are in the office.Judges will be looking for apps that are innovative and useful to the mobile workforce. These can either be generally useful, like tools for project management or document annotation, or industry-specific, such as helping doctors or lawyers handle workflows and day-to-day responsibilities unique to their professions."We're looking for the next generation of enterprise-grade mobile applications that will enable workers to be as productive in the field as they are in the office.

With a bunch of HP TouchPad's, $35,000 and a chance to get funding from a major venture capitol firm for your idea all on the line, plus a great relationship going between HP and Box.net, we hope to see a lot of you joining in on this contest to represent webOS in a way that puts the other platforms to shame. Get your team ready and your app outlines on the drawing board; it's time to make some apps! Hit the source link below for more details, and let us know if you'll be getting in on this contest - you only have until September 9th!

Damn, I was with them until they said "innovative". Can't I just copy other people's ideas? :)
What are you, RIM?
I think this is a great way to bring app development to the platform, instead of just flat out paying developers to built apps. Hopefully a lot of developers jumps on board and start coding.
Bet this is just a start of many other contests like this.
Is it though? Remember, this is not webOS exclusive. I would bet just one entry in the challenge will be webOS, but I'll probably lose that bet since no one uses webOS.
Sounds great. Maybe I'll enter Gemini once Box.net support is finished.
ok but correct me if i am wrong... any apps built for the TP will NOT work on any of the phones, unless the dev also builds a phone version. is this right?
that's correct for now...until they release enyo for the phones, however, that's in the coming months so...maybe pre3 will be released with enyo but right now thats doubtful
Don't count on it. According to Jon Rubinstein, that's NOT the plan.
From the ThisIsMyNext interview...
-----
TIMN: But it will happen?
Jon: No, I haven’t even said it’s going to happen. I chose my words very carefully. Sometime in the future we will re-converge these, but right now that’s not the plan.
-----
don't listen to Rubinstein, it is coming, you could pretty much put enyo on your phone now and it would be mostly functional...the question is when...
and if they somehow never release enyo to the phones (veer, pre3, i'll forgive them for the pre2 because probably only 3000 people have them), i think developer relations would pretty much be finished
Given that the question has BEEN when for months now, don't you think developer relations are pretty adversely affected already?
I mean, the TouchPad didn't even launch with the major apps demoed Feb. 9. No Armageddon Squadron II. Skype had video issues. Kindle was a placeholder until 24 hours ago. And these are the preferred developers with early access.
Developer relations is garbage for so many reasons.
Can't wait for Kerris to drop by and give a half-assed answer expecting us to just take it and shut up.
Hmm, after being burned with no update for Sprint Pre-, why should I trust HP will do ANYTHING they say?
Well, Stephen DeWitt was present in that interview and he didn't correct Jon on that statement so I'm assuming he agreed with it. Maybe you're correct though.
What? No. This mis-information is starting to really get frustrating. Even Precentral just had an article up on the front page talking about how to write a mojo app that would run on both the TP and phones. Change uirevision to 2 and your mojo app won't run inside of the emulator and will appear full screen. Then its just a matter of logic in the app to resize some of the UI elements and adding a back button by capturing what device you're running. It's ENYO that will only run on the TP currently. Mojo will be supported for at least another year and from the sounds of it, will probably be pushed even further than that.
thanks.
Technically, you are correct.
However, HP is doing everything in their power to kill Mojo and transition developers to Enyo, so you have to ask yourself if it's worth it to put the effort into a framework that the host company is actively trying to EOL and could strand with outdated hardware just like legacy users.
This rather confusing (Mojo? Full screen Mojo? Enyo? Give up?) debate is nicely encapsulated here.
BY app built for touchpad, he most likely meant app built using Enyo. Mojo apps are not built for Touchpad, they are adapted for Touchpad. Changing uirevision to 2 just makes it not run in the emulation window.
Too much competition split between 10 people across multiple platforms for WebOS developers to take on the project especially with the "publicly supported" limited hardware API to add "innovation"...just my opinion but I defintely don't have the time but if anyone wants to try I bet a sure top 10 winner would be an augmented reality app to purchase and sync music albums and movies to be downloaded to your box.net account based on a camera capturing cd and dvd covers or by scanning a bar code
If anything, this shows what a minor player Box.net must be to only be able to come up with $35K in total cash prizes for a contest. That's how much it would cost to hire a developer for about four months to do contact work. And this is supposed to be webOS's answer to Dropbox?
No... this is not just a webOS contest, they are also including ios and android development as part of the contest.
If anything it might be a Box.net answer to dropbox, but not a webOS one.
Yeah...to be fair, this isn't really having anything to do with WebOS except that HP is providing them with Touchpads to give away as material prizes.
I'll keep this short: Legacy device. No (sprint) updates coming. No devices coming. Don't want/need any tablet. Not paying Verizon or AT&T prices...for a Pre 3 which may or may not be released...this year? ever? when?
my Pre 1.4.5 broke on Friday. the replacement Pre is **** up the sync / back-up. updating to Dec 2010 and no email accounts will sync.
webOS is best, of course, y'all. Just ask anyone I've met who ever discussed cell phones.
See you again webOS, farewell and good luck. I hope it runs amok over mobile computing everywhere! come next upgrade, will see where webOS is and maybe come back to it then.
For now, it's Droid.
A. that was NOT short
B. what the heck are you posting that in this thread for?
C. who the **** cares
D. Don't point out the obvious and obey the new rules... I guess this breaks the rule too... oh ****
I like Kittens and WebOS -
injecting some positivity!
Yeah. You're supposed to post your goodbye message in the forums where it will almost immediately be moved into a General Complaints thread that nobody reads. The tender eyes of the remaining webOS supporters simply can not be subjected to such negativity.
Maybe someone will make a Goodbye app?
too soon
That is a great idea for an application, I'm sure you will win. Kinda like FML.
I think it's funny that the precentral site is showing me an ad for the HTC EVO 3D, and it's kinda working on selling me on it.
While it is great to see the prizes coming from HP, unfortunately I have a funny feeling that the top 10 Apps will almost 99% comprise of iOS and Droid apps! If this was a webOS app comp only great but it is not. Do you not think it would have helped to have made the developers make thier apps cross platform or select winners from each OS so we all get to feel involved :)
this contest is kind of like a repeat of the last webos contest....dont think to many devs jumped onboard or too many apps were developed.
hope this changes, even tho i am more interested in phone apps
Any developers that want to work on this as an app for attorneys feel free to contact me. My wife and I are going to pick up HP Touchpads when the 4g version hits Verizon. We'd absolutely love a billing app for attorneys that is cloud based, created reports and printed directly from the Touchpad. We've been using PCLaw by Lexis/Nexis. They had a Treo app but don't seem interested in creating any modern OS apps. The new app would not need to function with PCLaw but would be great as its own stand alone.
Thanks
