Box.net for the HP TouchPad update - 50GB of free storage, for LIFE 20

by Tim Stiffler-Dean Sat, 02 Jul 2011 8:40 pm EDT

Box.net offers a lifetime of 50GB Free Cloud Storage service to new owners of the HP TouchPad.

When we first told you about Box.net's great offer of 50GB of free cloud storage space for new TouchPad owners, we were left asking a very important question: "How long will we get to access that 50GB of storage?" Well, neither Box.net nor HP forgot us yesterday when the release of the app was made official, and we found that the 50GB of free storage is in fact free for the life of your account. That's $20/month, every month for as long as you have a Box.net account, but with no cost at all to you. We ran the numbers for you already, to see just how much money this is. If you buy a 16 GB HP TouchPad today, it will take you two years and one month for the cost savings to completely pay off the cost of the TouchPad.

Now that is what you call a great deal for TouchPad owners. If you've got an HP TouchPad already, head to the App Catalog to download your copy of the Box.net app right now and sign up for the 50GB of free storage (which also syncs with Google Docs and other services). You won't regret it.

This to me is an awesome advantage.....

Is there an expiration date to sign up/open an account? I plan to buy my TouchPad later in the month.

Wondering the same thing... ordered my TouchPad from QVC today, but it won't ship til the 15th...

Holy cow.... that's HUGE. Need to go sign up now before I forget.

Edit - The only restriction I noticed is that the maximum file size is 1GB. Looks like that's just part of the service and nothing to do with this special offer.

That's the best deal, and just for Touchpad owners...

This is an awesome deal.

As far as I know it's forever. Crazy awesome deal.

This, alone, could prompt me to get off the TouchPad fence. I've been holding out for document editing and to see what the first OTA update brought. The reason I only use DropBox for a few things is because I don't want to pay for additional storage. This is more like the TiVo lifetime subscription, which is something that makes a lot of sense to me.

What would make this even more awesome is when the document editing update lands, if that update also includes the option to sync to Box.net. Right now, I can use the Quickoffice app on my Pre 2 just fine to view documents stored in my Box account, but then I have to use the box.net client app to upload documents to my Box account. If I can not only edit documents, but sync those changes back to Box.net, I would be a very happy camper.

If this is for a "personal" account, box.net site looks like it only allows deskop syncing for business accounts (doesnt say anything about syncing from mobile though so perhaps still could happen with personal depending on mobile client features?) as well as password protected sharing and a few other goodies. The personal account features seem like very basic storage and, moreover, limit file size to 1 gig which would exclude many movies.

You connect to the box.net via webdav effectively so ANY webdav drive mapping program should work.

Google Docs works fine on my TouchPad, if that helps.

If HP had announced this as making things right instead of the paltry $50 rebate, I would have been cheering for HP. This deal is just awesome. I have to wonder if perhaps HP is providing storage space to Box.net to accomodate Touchpad owners. A little "hey, I'll give you all this storage if you give my customers 50 GB free".

A $50 rebate on the $600 Touchpad won't even cover 10% of the price. Free 50GB FOR LIFE from Box.net completely covers the price in two years and still keeps on giving.

But because they haven't announced this as "Making things right" and instead lumped it in with half a dozen other awesome incentives, you aren't cheering for them?

Seems backwards to me.

Totally makes me want to jump on too! I never thought the TouchPad would be much mor than an iPad v1 that uses cards. Considering when it was developed and all... Now this announcement comes along and I am blown away!

Way to go HP!

You could make the offer for a limited time to really make me run to BestBuy, but please just keep this one differentiator alive until after the holidays at least so more people will "get on"! I plan on buying Touchpads for Xmas gifts. I am giving them to people who won't spend every second comparing them to iPads because they have never even used a tablet before... There is your niche HP, forget these Fanboys who turn on you in ten seconds flat. Sell to senior citizens!
I will save you the reply... I know, many seniors are getting iPads now too!
But not the ones I know.

just another benefit to this awesome device!

Also, I don't think that iPads make the Angry Birds slingshot sound when you pull the app down to the bottom to launch it off the top (hold TP upside down to get this sound effect - it's hilarious)

Just a thought and wanted to clarify something... so you get the 50GB of storage, but is this truly a 50GB "premium account" if you will? Can someone confirm this is not a "free account" that has an upgraded memory storage to 50GB. I ask because I want to make sure you do get the 1GB single file limit with the 50GB of storage. The "free account" has a 25MB file limit. -M

You get 50GB storage and 1GB file size limit, I just got mine :D

This would be a huge reason to switch, if it allowed desktop syncing. I couldn't see myself using it as much if I had to go on a website and download each file. Might as well just use my dropbox in that case. So hoping they allow the desktop sync... Otherwise this is not nearly as attractive.

I wonder if I boaght this tp just to get the 50gb free and than buy the next tp which will have wireless internet capabilities not just wifi than could I use the second tp on that same box.net account? also what is this problem with file editing I keep hearing hasent anyone heard of google docs?????? hello???? I am sure google docs can solve most of your file editing issues c'mon??
