Bug fix: Get past the gray space in the browser 27

by Adam Marks Mon, 08 Nov 2010 5:33 pm EST

Have you ever been browsing the web on your device and come across a big gray area that you can't get past on the page?  You probably tried refeshing the page, closing and reloading the web browser, or going back and then forward, but you just can't seem to get to the rest of the page.  Luckily, there is a really easy fix for this that works almost every time.  If you rotate the phone to landscape mode, that will almost always give you access to the rest of the page that was blocked by that gray space.  Then, just rotate the phone back to portrait mode to continue reading.  Continue reading after the break for screenshots

  • The Gray area is present at the bottom of the page

Broswer - Gray area (before)

  • After the phone is rotated, the rest of the webpage is visible

Browser - Rotated

  •  After you rotate the phone back to portrait model, the full page is available for you

Browser - Portait

Great Tip! It's really frustrating only being able to see half of a page.

This is not a bug fix.

Uhmmm...I believe its a bug fix because it does fix the bug....

If it were a bug fix, you wouldn't have to keep doing it. It's a temporary workaround that has to be done each time it happens.

I'm shocked that Palm has not fixed this problem yet. I run across this almost every time i use my phone. I mainly see it on forums.

The problem, as i've noticed, happens when:
1. You load the page.
2. Leave the page.
3. Go back to the page (likely to read more comments)
4. If the page is longer (due to added comments), then whatever was added on the bottom is shown as a grey bar.

Essentially, the browser is caching the length of the last known load, and is only allowing you to browse that far down. Rotating the phone resets the cached length.

...it's a workaround.

This is not a bug fix.

For the love of God, does anybody have a "bug fix" for the double/triple posting issue when using the Back button?

Don't use a computer. This is a bug fix.

'Don't use the back-button'! ;) Of course, that's as much of a bug-fix as rotating to landscape. Still useful information until Palm & PreCentral can correct the root-cause of the bugs.

After posting, let the screen refresh, then access the URL bar, move the cursor to the far right of the URL, and delete "#comment..." from the end. Finally, hit enter or press the arrow to load the page without another post coming up. Now you can refresh as much as you want.

This does not fix my gray space. It used to, but hasn't work at all for about 3 months.

This doesn't fix the gray space for me either. I have to reload/refresh the page, then zoom (in or out) to get rid of it. Annoying, but better than not being able to see.

This also works for "white" cards that I typically get when looking at a page (usually a graphics heavy page) switch to another card, then back to that page.

none of tjese tricks wor for me. Specifically on blogspt.com pages. Annoying

Double-tap anywhere on the page, esp. a text column or image. Works every time for me.

Same here - Zooming in/out or double tap bring it up for me.

This workaround doesn't work most of the time. As madcow19 stated, a refresh and zoom in/out *usually* fixes the gray void.

dosent work with some sites, like tdbanks site when you click on history it just cuts page out. It worked before but won't work now.

I usually close and reopen the browser which seems to work. Will have to try this workaround.

It seems to me that all they would need to do to correct double/triple posts would be to have it filter and error out on exact duplicate posts from the same user.

I will try this next time this happens to me. Refreshing and/or zooming in and out has worked in the past, and is one of the first things I try, but doesn't work nearly often enough. Recently I've gone to copying the URL to the clipboard, loading a bookmark I haven't been to in ages, and then pasting the URL back into the address field and the page then loads fine. That's a bit much to go through, but it hasn't failed me yet.

i find it easier to just double tap to zoom in and zoom out real quick fixes this issue , its really quite simple .

Great! now lets hope this is fixed in 2.0

ironically, I followed the link from Tweed to here, the bottom was gray, and the "fix" didn't work...lol. I had to close the browser and use the P|C app. Also, I see alot of you have theories as to why it happens (i.e. Added comments, etc.) I don't think there is one reason. I think it just is. It seems to happen to me alot on this site and Wikipedia. Usually when I go back a page. Not many others. Don't know what that means or if it helps.

Whenever I encounter this, I just zoom out (pinch in), and that solves it. I think pinching would be faster than rotating to landscape and back to portrait.

I would just like my kkeyboard to work without doubes or missing letters. :)

Just the fact that this needs to be addressed as a "tip" speaks volumes.

I'm happy this workaround was noted until Palm fixes this problem. I get this a lot in the Facebook mobile site if I gesture back or press the back button. Tried it a few times now and flipping to landscape seems to fix the issue.

A "bug fix" that always works for me is to touch the screen anywhere above the gray and SIMULTANEOUSLY touch with another finger inside the gray area. Takes a split second, faster than rotating or zooming in and out etc, and fixes it instantly (for me at least).
