AT&T TouchPad hits FCC 22

by Jonathan I Ezor#IM Thu, 23 Jun 2011 1:55 pm EDT

Once again, the FCC's search engine has come through for us with the appearance yesterday of what appears to be a TouchPad with a built-in cell network radio. We say "appears" because, as with previous such disclosures, there is very little public information about the submission, but a letter available as part of the set of documents contains the following useful nugget:

Equipment Class: PCB - PCS Licensed Transmitter

Description of product as it is marketed: (NOTE: This text will appear below the equipment class on the grant): TOUCHPAD

The letter further discloses the frequency ranges of this device: approx. 850 and 1900 MHz, which correspond to AT&T's domestic GSM bands, suggesting this version at least will probably be for AT&T's network. (Other parts of the filing show frequencies for Bluetooth and WiFi radios as well.)

Nice to hear, although I don't want to even think of what type of data plans will be suggested at launch.

It seems like Verizon has already taken the plunge on tiered plans.

For me, I will use the wifi TP with pre- Free Tether for now.

If you are interested, look at the data plans offered by ATT for the iPad or any of their smart phones:

http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/ipad.jsp

Basically, $15 for 250MB or $25 for 2G.

I don't imagine it will be much different, if at all.

nice reporting PreCentral!

So AT&T looks to be the main HP Partner. Verizon may get a few higher end phones here and there. And Sprint? Well, Sprint will be my carrier with my Pre2 until it dies. Then, who knows...

ditto.

Sprint is still frustrating the cr*p out of me on this. I'm on the original Pre - and WTF, this is shaping up to be another bad joke on the original, loyal and unlimited useage customers for WebOS.

Wouldn't it be nice if they charged us by data usage on tablets? We're using these at home most often, anyhow - leaving for vacation (domestic, hah) at even $50/GB would be a much better option for everyone. It would certainly make me reconsider the wifi-only version and bring me into their retail stores.

One has to wonder whether the AT&T data plans for the TP will be the same price as the iPad. You would think that they would be the same, however, it's highly likely that Apple, with it's unusual leverage over carriers, mandated specific terms for iPad data plans as a selling feature for the iPad.

That means AT&T may or may not offer these same terms with the TP, like the ability to buy data month to month.

Just in case you haven't seen it, there's a quasi-unofficial review of the TouchPad at this blogger's site from the New York Digital Experience Event this week:

I like his idea about a "touchstone in every box" lol

Two videos and a nice write-up after the jump.

AT&T? No thanks.

AT&T? No thanks. Overpriced network. Overpriced plans. I might not have a choice though. If I have to leave Sprint because of their lack of phone choices (Android is just terrible), I'll have to play more for AT&T but I'll get an iPhone. HP couldn't use their weight or "long standing relationship" to convince Sprint to get the Pre3.

Sprint is killing me by not picking up any WebOS devices.

What marks it as GSM? Sprint and Verizon use the same frequencies for CDMA. Is it implied because AT&T was already announced for the Touchpad?

CDMA runs on 800 instead of 850.

So confusing. I did a Google search and found conflicting information (of course). :) I also forgot that Sprint's CMDA network is 1900 and the 800 is/was roaming.

This is interesting:
"Currently the SMR 800Mhz band is used exclusively by iDEN technology, however, Sprint Nextel is planning to deploy CDMA technology on this band in the future. As of June 2011, the FCC has approved two CDMA devices for use on the SMR band, the Samsung SPH-M380 and the HTC EVO 3D."

Here's to hope they have some sense to put 2100 in it as well. Dual band smart devices are just plain stupid these days.

I'll be getting this on day 1. For those who need a tablet with data everywhere there is no compromising between a wifi only and cellular version.

Of course, if Sprint would let us tether our Pre, we could "legally" use a WiFi only tablet anywhere.

ATTs H+ data is smooth as butter. Its way way faster than wimax on sprint (something we wont even be able to get with TP or the PRe3) so I don't feel bad leaving sprint since they gave me the silent treatment and I wanted to try the veer.

I hated ATT too and to this day still detest it, never thought i would be an att guy but this is what sprint did to me.. Now i kick myself every day for not getting an ipad data plan last april. the ipad is cool, but that plus the data plan is what makes it a cool device. its not as cool if you have to use freetether and rely on your first device not dying so your second device has internet a little longer.

Plus a lot of the really sweet gps software relies on AGPS (wont be in wifi only models)

One thing i hate, is that the data wont rollover, i dont wanna buy a 2gb plan, then never use it since im always on my phone instead, it would be phat if they could share the same plan.

what really irks me is i called off friday to get the touchpad, now im debating holding off to get it in white with some H+ data speeds.

If you think about it, its kinda cool. Touchpad will be the first 4g non android tablet, not even the iPad 1, or iPad 2 can say that. it will be the first H+ tablet and the first non-3g tablet for ATT.

I hope you don't plan to use much data on AT&T/Verizon...
