Classic Palm OS emulator in works for the Pixi 8
Got a Palm Pixi but still need to run some old school Palm OS apps? Right now, there’s no way to go about it while your Pre-toting friends can fire up Classic and get the action going. Never fear, for MotionApps hears your pain and is in the process of cooking up a version of Classic that will work on the Pixi and even make use of the device’s smaller screen.
Currently, Classic on the Pre shows up with a classic Palm OS D-pad and device buttons meant to emulate the physical controls on the older PDAs and Treo smartphones. These controls are dropped below the 320x320 Palm OS screen, using the remaining 160 pixels on the Pre’s screen. The Pixi, however, has a shorter display and only 80 extra pixels below the Palm OS screen, which means that any controls would have to be squished. Or they could be done webOS-style for maximum space utilization, as MotionApps posted on their Facebook page. It’s a pretty darned slick solution to what could have been a nasty problem.

Hopefully this will become obsolete as more and more apps are developed. Plus I hope the color coding for palm calender comes back.....
This should help on the sales front for folks looking to upgrade from a Centro. It removes a potential major mental roadblock for customers...
Salesperson: "This is the next generation smartphone from Palm. It makes a great replacement for your Centro"
Customer: "But I invested in so many apps on my Centro. I'd hate to have to repurchase them, or worse yet, not be able to find their WebOS equivalents"
Salesperson: "No worries, you can run your existing apps using the Classic emulator."
Sold!
and you work like a screenplay writer, right? You have a great plot going on here:) Thanks!
The Classic Pixi solution looks great. I would hope MotionApps would seriously utilize a similar solution for the Pre since the present UI totally uses up too much screen real estate. There also has even been much discussion in the Classic forum about the hope of true full-screen solution for Classic on the Pre.
+1
I agree totally, the current version of Classic for the Palm Pre is too bulky and unrefined. I too hope Motion Apps consider making the Pixi version for the Pre also. Get rid of the current version available on the Pre.
I remember reading about this on Monday @ everything Pre & Palminfocenter.
I'm glad it works in the Pixi, because it sux in the Pre.
The faster we remove the need for Classic the better, IMO. With the advent of "Milez" and its recent upgrade, I finally can let my Centro go completely. I had been carrying it in the car and only using it to track business miles (no cell service in it at all).
I tried Classic, and hated it. I did not like that I had to have it open just to run other stuff. And many of the "other" things I wanted to run were buggy inside "Classic" for me. It was so big and bulky. Just terrible, for me anyway. I know a lot of people like it.
When I try to find classic in my app store it isnt there! Any thoughts?
