Community 'telethon' raises over $8,000 for Pre 2 phones for homebrew devs 24
In order to test all of the awesome things they’re doing for compatibility with webOS 2.0 and the new Palm Pre 2, the chaps at WebOS Internals and Jason Robitaille of Canuck Coding were in need of such devices. As open source developers offering the vast majority of their wares at no cost to the public, as you may imagine their coffers aren’t exactly overflowing with funds.
Enter the Palm community, full of awesome members (that’s you, by the way) that organized an internet telethon to get the homebrew all-stars the money they’d need to buy the phones. In less than one month, the community managed to raise $8,732.52, more than enough to buy a developer Pre 2 for Jason and each of WebOS Internals’ fifteen staff members. The excess funds will be used to pay for server costs that result from hosting the popular homebrew tools, and may even be used down the line for buying next generation webOS devices *cough*PalmPad*cough* for testing.
Said Rod Whitby, WebOS Internals Project Lead:
“This community is awesome. 'nuff said.”
We couldn’t agree more. If you missed out on the telethon, it’s not too late to make your own contribution to support WebOS Internals.
As for everybody who contributed, we got the list from cantaffordit (thanks!) and will have a special surprise for you in the forums later today!

oooo, special surprise later today!
I would save some of that money to get newer devices.
Why didn't HP provide that hookup? Sounds like they are more "Tablet driven." I don't know, I've been outta the loop for a while anyways...
special surprise? oooo, exciting.
Yay, that was fun again. Go homebrew, this community, WebOS Internals, and Jason!
That's great to see. I love what WebOS internals does, so I was glad to contribute back to them. It's good to see they all got hooked up with Pre 2's.
I want to contribute, but I'm broke at the moment.Hold off on the list of contributors!! Lol,jk. I will still contribute in the future.

I just contributed, i've been slacking!
Is this another Oprah moment where I will be getting a new Pre in the mail?!? Thanks to webOS internals again for all their hard work! Keep it up!
That's awesome!
Can we spend this 8 grand on research for getting WebOS to work on the HTC Evo?
The Evo is such a crap device.. yay, a phone with battery life much worse than the Pre, using last year's processor. Without a gesture area and a trackpad/trackball how exciting! Really not sure why this is brought up in every post on the pc blog.
Anyway, webOS Internals does fun and LEGAL things with Palm phones. Packaging up webOS to run on other devices is definitely illegal. If you're going to do it though, do it on a phone that's actually good... like hmm.. nah, can't really think of any with a trackball (which could easily be mapped to replace the gesture area) that would be worth it.
I love webOS. I have a Pre and Evo so I can speak from experience unlike you. My Evo has amazing battery life compared to my Pre. Not sure where you're getting your info. Especially with regards to standby time there is no comparison. I could get 10-12 hours tops with hardly any use. I can get 18 + hours with the same use out of my Evo and it can do a lot more than my Pre.
Yes, I miss the elegant nature of WebOS especially multi-tasking but the functionality of the Evo is head and shoulders above my Pre. Sorry. Still love it but it can't ever be my primary phone. Well, I can't say that yet until 2.0 comes out but for now I use my Evo exclusively. If the new slate phones are amazing or if the tablet is great...I'll be back.
The Evo doesn't need any of that. That's why it doesn't have it.

go pawn your ripoff wares elsewhere.
mperkinsky; if you love your evo then why are you still here?
HP/Palm has they're work cut out... I'm still hoping that the underdog can make something of relevance happen again.
Wow...great, a bunch of people get free phones. Who cares.
If you use Preware, webOS Quick Install, ANY of the custom overclocking kernels, OR ANY homebrew apps, you BETTER care.
The people who work on Preware and the kernels, as well as many of the homebrew apps (i.e. webOS Internals) are the people getting the free devices SO THEY CAN MAKE STUFF WORK ON THE NEW DEVICES AND ON webOS 2.0!
Additionally, Jason Robitaille (maker of webOS Quick Install and a bunch of patches and other software) is also getting a device.
I'll bet you're the type who expects everyone to give you stuff for free and you don't think about giving back to anybody at all.
It might explain his name: villain
eh, still don't care.
I am oh so happy that the number 1 mobile platform is going to be even better really soon.. Flash and so many other upgrades that will allow us to experience PALM like we are supposed.. And from my heart I say thank you to all the developers that has made as many patches in the past and can't wait to see awaits all of the PALM junkies like myself in the future.. THANK YOU
Just to clarify.. When I say number 1 I am speakin from a user friendly experience stand point.. Not a percentage of the smartphone market..
