The Competition: iPhone 4 219
Cold, hard fact: there are likely going to be more than a few people switching from a webOS phone to the forthcoming iPhone 4 (heck, some lucky people are making that switch already). We previously asked EVO 4G switchers to fess up, so it's only fair we do the same for Apple switchers.
If you are switching, our pals at TiPb.com have ruthlessly kindly put together a guide for Pre to iPhone switchers which, in addition to being helpful, also lays out some of the differences between the platforms. TiPb wasn't afraid to call out where the iPhone doesn't stack up well against webOS - namely: no over-the-air updates, no easy homebrew or patching, no decent notification system, no physical keyboard. We suspect those features and more will be enough to keep many Pre faithful on webOS, to say nothing of carrier decisions.
So if you're staying, tell us why. If you're going, godspeed and we still love you - but let us know what's sending you to iPhone 4 territory here as you join the TiPb Nation.

I'm sticking with Palm, The pre blows away the iphone in my opinion!
First, its the dumbest thing to switch to ATT.
Second, iPhone OS is dated. Agreed its hardware is great and the factime is super, but its iOS is inferior to WebOS.
Third, Seriously, whats up with that small screen ? They can match Evo.
Thanks , but I am staying with Sprint first, then with Pre/Evo.
Small screen? Have you checked the size of the Pre's screen lately?
Sure Pre is small. But it does have that unique form factor. For all Steve Job's genius , he could have squeezed half inch more screen using the same overall dimensions.
Have you checked the Evo ?
The iPhone is 3.5 in and the Pre 3.1 in. That much of a difference is noticeable but not too much. Personally I like bigger like the EVO. As far as me switching from my Pre to the iPhone. Hell no. If I were to switch to any other OS from WebOS it would be Android. I do believe Android is the best OS of all the OS's available but I think WebOS has the best UI. iPhone's UI sucks and is outdated and plain. If someone were to put WebOS's UI on Android then Android would be unstoppable. As of right now Android's UI is a little scattered and not as user friendly as WebOS and even Apple. If HPalm can't release a new phone by November then I wil get the best Android device that comes out between now and then.
One more thing, WE NEED MORE APPS.
I'm quite objective when it comes to phone hardware, and I have to admit the new iphone is truly a lust-worthy piece of technology. It blows everything else out of the water, which unfortunately includes the Palm Pre. Nothing out there is even close to the sexiness of the design and robustness of the hardware. Apple has really outdone themselves and deserve the praise they are getting for their new phone.
HOWEVER, I still hate apple's ways of business and their software, so I will not be making the switch to the dark side. I love webOS to death (which has TRUE multitasking, not apple's faux multitasking), and that is the main reason I am sticking to Sprint and the Pre (contract rates on Sprint that are half of what you pay on at&t and Verizon is also a pretty huge plus :). The Pre does everything I want and more, so I see no reason for anyone to switch unless they really cannot do without the latest and greatest phone on the market. I say to those people, "there will always be something that is better than what you have just around the corner. Wait until Palm reveals their new phone until you jump ship."
totally agree on hardware. iPhone 4 is the best phone in the world in terms of hardware. Being able to surf the web and call is the only "Big Deal" on ATT. The rest feature to feature Sprint is the best.
Really? maybe you're not aware of the antenna issues when your holding it in your left hand.
Wow! I was typing a reply from my pre when it all of a suden froze and then reloaded losing everthingthat I typed. I wonder if that happens a lot with iOS or android. It happens all the time with my pre. I like webOS but I feel it needs a lot more work and saying it's new is a very poor excuse. I really hope they drop something new real soon but I think when the sprint store gets in more EVOs I might play around w/ that til palm decides to get back into the game. BTW you can talk on the phone and surf the net on the EVO when you have 4G coverage.
Wont happen on ATT/Iphone, unless you somehow get a data signal. And typing through your own fingerprints and hand-goo, I doubt your posts will be a long a you put up here.
It's funny that you mention this, as it literally just happened to me two seconds ago while typing a response in the forums here from my ipad. For some silly, silly reason, they have an undo button on the keyboard that will delete paragraphs of information you are typing in one button press. It's not like the button is in a hard to reach place, it is right where your left thumb would rest if you are typing in landscape. It was pretty annoying.
The AT&T version of the Pre Plus has been solid, with no problems at all. No Oreo effect on mine at least, and I have never experienced a phone lock-up in the month+ since it was released(on AT&T), and there also doesn't seem to be a problem with the plastic(no cracking or anything like that).
I suppose that the 11 month delay between the original release and when AT&T picked up the Palm Pre turned out to be a good thing for AT&T users since the build quality issues seem to be fully resolved at this point.
are you kidding me? iPhone hardware the best? is OUTDATED alreay.
Tell me what is the Camera resolution? 5 mp EVO is 8 mp Autofocus
Tell me what can of front cam it has? VGA only? ups check EVO
Please, hardware is already outdated and is just out of the box.
Software wyse .. IOS sucks even with the fake multitasking. and Video conference only with iPhones. EVO and DELL and Galaxy with EVERYBODY Phones PC's Mac's anybody.
Personally I'm sticking with the Pre for now, it all depends on HP answers on mobile devices SOON. I don't like Android as much as webOS so far lacking in a lot of things that Pre are natural gestures. EVO is a nice piece of hardware but has android in it for my liking. Once you try a webOS device and see how easy is to access everything in it, you can't tell that android is better, at least not in the user interface, which is what we all use.
Is there really any difference between an 8 MP and a 5 MP camera when you're dealing with smartphone-level optics? I think it just makes the file size unnecessarily larger and gives bragging rights.
Sucks up 40% more flash for only marginal image improvement. And the smart phones and monitors screens can only diplay a limited resolution so it's not like the pictures can look better unless you enlarge them in any alloted display space.
If all you ever plan on doing with the photo is viewing it on your phone, then no, that that much difference. If you plan on doing more with the photo (printing, editing, etc. on a computer) then extra MPs help. It is not the only thing that helps, but it does help.
GSM, no thanks-anks-anks.
ATT, never again
$53 vs $95, no thanks.
A little more hardware power and WebOS will be just right.
A few more key apps, and I can retire my Treo.
I got this far without iPhone, I dont need Steve Jobs telling me what I can and cannot do.
Like the hardware with metal and glass. O/S is ok, but I like the flexibility of WebOS and must have a physical keyboard.
+1 re: AT&T
If Sprint had iPhone, it'd be a much more difficult question.
That said, I'm more tempted by Android than iPhone. I'm still on WebOS. I hope HPalm comes out with stronger hardware soon.
It's gonna happen and soon. Lets face it, hardware is easy, it's almost homogenized. A simple up-spec of what they have, maybe add wimax radio, no big deal. HTC does it every other week. We're not looking for revolutionary hardware, just evolutionary to provide the horsepower needed to make webos flow faster and smoother.
Apparently Palm didn't find it too easy.
LOL. So true.
I love the hardware of the Iphone 4 however I am not a fan of AT&T. Also quite honestly, I guess all I need of Apple from the Ipod Touch and Wifi. I love the 64 gb storage for my music. Anything related to streaming music, I instantly fire up the pre and use Slacker and away I go.
how do you pay 53 dollars a month? Please see my post in the forums under cdma phones section! Thanks!
I wouldn't say the pre blows the iphone 4 out of the water. I would say that webOS blows iOS out of the water by far though.
I'm going to save WEBOS for the slate, and get the iphon4!! that way Ill have 2 things I love!
WebOS=awesome
Pre Hardware= Crap
If I switch, it will be because Palm didn't put out a new device fast enough and I gave up on on PLASTIC.
Bingo ! You nailed it.
WebOS, excellent
Palm Plastic, crap
Palm, new processor & new case would = happy customers.... Let's hope Palm/HP hears this loud and clear !!!
I'll never go Apple. Maybe kids can get past the greedy iphone business model (because its parents paying the bills), and yuppies can swallow the Hype, but I won't. There's to many players out there that can give similar goodies without raping your wallet and forcing you in directions you don't want to go.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate iphones (or the users.) The iphone is the biggest force behind the innovations at Palm, Android, and RIM.
We can all get along - and the competition is healthy ! EK
I'll stick with Palm for now. I choose phones based on the carrier first. I prefer Sprint and will not switch to AT&T. If the iPhone ever came to Sprint, then I might have a hard time staying, but for now Palm is my phone.
i stay. i dont want to have a Phone that explains itself as "very expensive" "everyone will buy it" and "has now multitasking!".. i dont want apple to decide, what i can do and what i can't. I want the community to decide what i am able to do :).
same here. Apple sucks
Staying. I'm on Sprint and not going to leave for a locked down phone. Hardware is nice but its no reason for me to leave. I prefer to do what I want with my phone, not a rental phone.
I will stay with my Pre, ( and hopfully soon some new shiny webOS phone ). Every time i "use" the iphone of my girlfriend it feels so limited in point of using the OS. The gestures that make the webOS so easy to use with one finger in a fast way is what making me stay, beside all the other nice things about webOS.
I have to say that the iphone 4 is the first iphone after the old 2G ( that i owned for 2 years before switching to the pre ) where the design looks good. Still to big in terms of the height of the phone.
GO Palm .. GO HP ..
Isn't it true that almost all of the Smartphone Experts have iPhones?
I suspect that the Smartphone Experts have all of the different types of phones, from a Blackberry to an Android, to Pre(or Pre Plus), to an iPhone. Having a device and having a preference for a device are two different things. If I had the money, I'd have one of all of the different phones too, just so I could experiment and see which device is better for different things.
How much better is the Blackberry for e-mail compared to the other devices out there, and can the advantage of the Blackberry in e-mail be removed with a given app? That sort of thing just requires a bit of money for the hardware and apps.
I'm staying with the WebOS.........it blows away the IPhone. Also, I'm very happy with Sprint and have no intention of ever going to AT&T.
I would like to see new hardware.........larger screen and larger keyboard.
I got my Pre the day they came out.
Larger Screen? Larger Keyboard?
The Size of the Pre is one of the things that make me love it so much. I don t care if its a bit thicker then the iphone, but i like very much that its not that height as the iphone. I don t want a larger screen, that would make the phone larger ;) Iphone is already to large. When you carry it in your pocket and sit down its sometimes uncomfortable in your pocket, not with the pre.. I have seen pictures of the EVO.. not sure where i should put this big screen.... Please next Palm/HP Phone should still fit in my palm of my hand ;)
I think I could stand a sideways keyboard. Since that's the way you'd ideally view most webpages anyway, it'd be nice to have the keyboard and not have to scroll around and zoom in and out in the smaller portrait view.
I actually hated the sideways keyboard (HTC Apache/Mogul/Raphael). The portrait keyboard was one of the things that made me go with the Pre.
Nb
Staying Palm-proud. Y? TRUE MULTITASKNG. Nuff said.
AGREED! If Palm to only one thing right from the git-go IT WAS MULTITASKING in card view! GENIUS!
I love the Palm Pre phone with it's power to multitask, the user friendly WebOS, physical keyboard, notification system, and the easy hombrew patches that you can put on this phone is out of this world. Plus, Sprint is more reasonable then At&t service plans. If the Iphone 4 was coming over at Sprint then I still think I will keep my Palm Pre. But, it would be very, very, tempting to get the Iphone 4. I'm just waiting patiently to see what is coming out from Palm once the HP buyout is final after the end of July.
I agree 100%.
it's webos for me. I will wait until the new phone is released and am 90% I will buy it. It would have to completly fail for me to stay with my pre;-)
cards, gesture... Genius.
sprint
phys. keyboard
notifications
award winning form factor
swappable battery
OTA updates
flash
palm attitude with homebrew ( hp...leave it alone)
I don't think palm had the resources$$$ to hit it out of park @ pre launch... Pretty obvious. It took 6 months to launch after release.
all of that will change with HP purchase( fingers crossed on finalization)
I'm a huge supporter of WEBOS
I love WebOS, but the Pre is getting long in the tooth. I've had mine since launch day without issue. It's time for some new killer hardware. I'm not going to wait forever.. I would never go to AT&T.
Leaving the Pre. Maybe I will get an AT&T WebOS device in the future but right now Palm is lacking and has been for months. Its strange to see people really believing that WebOS as it is now is blowing away iOS 4. I don't see it. Sure it can be more but that potential is not being met as of lately.
I think many can't afford to leave sprint is all. So they bash what they can't have but truly desire. If the iphone was offered on Sprint, they'd be foaming at the mouth. As it is, they have to settle for an Evo or stick with the shoddily built Pre.
was waiting for some iphone douch baggerie
"Can't afford to leave Sprint" - seriously?
"Settling for an EVO"
Dude, if you want to troll then sit back and read the threads for a while - there are lots of trolls more talented than you are that you could really learn from.
Lets see. I *WAS* on AT&T, so I guess the "foaming" wasn't too hard to resist or I just didn't desire it enough.
True story: My Pre (I don't know if it's a sprint thing) pops up a notification when a call is dropped. I discovered this about 9 months after I got a Sprint Pre - the first time it happened.
With AT&T in the CA bay area I think I would have discovered this in the first 9 minutes. It is difficult to overstate just how sad AT&T service is in a lot of areas.
I think it is conceivable that people ACTUALLY like WebOS better than iOS. Saying that WebOS is better does not mean that you can't afford AT&T (not sure that wanting a bargain is wrong though) or that you lust for the iPhone. Though Apples ecosystem is robust I believe it is too closed. I like the freedom that Palm has fostered with WebOS devs and homebrewers. Also I dig Apples implementation of multitasking, it should work for most of the type of people that buy the iPhone (being that they are generally not tech savvy or technically sophisticated) but it is by no means as elegant as the WebOS implementation. Having that freedom and an OS that is arguably one of the best mobile OS out there is a good reason for me to stay.
Kinda bizarre reasoning. Sprint sells the same cell phone service AT&T does, yet gives you more extras for less. Why would I pay more for less? For the iPhone? What I save each year, I can buy a new iPod Touch every year if it's that big a deal. (it isn't)
I just don't think too many people dropping $199 for the Pre and $199 for the Evo a year later "can't afford" an iPhone at the same price. Hell, even if it was a matter of credit worthiness, they save enough on Sprint service each month to pay for an upfront deposit to switch.
I want nothing to do with AT&T. I even dumped their phone and DSL for Clear, so I guess you could say I'm going all-in with Sprint. Like I said...it's the same phone calls and browsing. Just with half the bill each month.
sure... I guess saving money on a cellular plan would be a stupid thing to desire... Especially when sprint offers more for less.
I watched USA win a world cup game today... Live... Free on sprint T.V. All of my iphone users who are diehard soccer fans were filled with envy.
sprint offers many extra perks.. Amazing plans... Etc
I could easily flip this... You must like paying more... For less. And to top of... The worst CS in the industry.
@ cardfan
wow! That's one of the dumbest coments I've seen on the forums in a while. I can definitely afford to leave sprint moron, but I'm not going to be retarded and pay more and get less. The iphone is cool and all (still no cooler than any other smartphone, just alot more apps and does less), but it is the ONLY thing that keeps at&t alive at this point. It's so funny to talk to people that have the iphones and ask how much they spend monthly on their cellular plan, then tell them how much I spend on my sprint plan, and how much MORE I get for less. So cardfan, the question for you is how much do YOU pay a month at at&t? Oh, how about those higher ETF's, and doing away with unlimited data and almost paying the same (damn that's what I want in my cellular plan, crappy service, ridiculous ETF's, and NO unlimited data), sure makes me want to switch! All in all, it's not that I can't AFFORD at&t and the iphone, I'm just not a gullible idiot like you, and enjoy getting much more for much less and having more money in my pocket at the end of the month. I can also upgrade my phone EVERY year, how about you? All that money saved pays for a brand new shiney phone every year. Dumbass!
I'm out. I've been here from the very beginning, sticking around through thick and thin, but I'm just ready for change. I've been waiting and waiting for these supposed improvements to webOS to no avail. I realize that it's a new platform, but there are no excuses for some of the issues I've experience. My phone has broken twice, same problem both times. Build quality is just awful, and the OS in whole remains laggy. Applications leave me wanting more and I desperately want new hardware. Maybe I'll be back one day as the platform progresses but I'm done for now. I'll keep lurking around precentral though hoping for the best. And come on, still no flash!
buh-bye
Oh, and keep waiting for flash on iFauxn...
Staying cause I have hope for pre-2 being great, maybe not as good as iphone but still great.
Staying for now.
If iPhone comes to Sprint... that will be a hard decision.
Sticking with Palm (HP) and the Pre
1) Hate ATT, love Sprint
2) Carrier price $$
3) No Phsyical keyboard
4) Apple blows - dictatorship you can only do what they say and want you to do
5) iOS dated - like most said a new OS that added features already in WebOS, yet not implemented well.
6) iPhone expensive! (though hardware is solid, I will give them that, and hardware is top of the line)
7) No removeable battery: Pre = 1150mAh, iPhone4 = 1400mAh, not much a difference in time so I would need either a Touchstone to charge it still AND/OR another battery...oops can't have that one with iPhone.
I played with a coworkers 3GS with iOS 4 installed (so iOS without multitasking) and it was even hard for him to get the hang of how everything worked. WebOS is much more intuitive.
GO PALM, bring us the 2GHz WebOS Pre 2.0 SOON! I am definitely waiting til fall to see what is in the making.
I agree...
I love the Pre, I like Sprint. But I want a Pre Plus which is the true competitor of the iphone. I can't stand apple, and until very recently (a week ago) I wouldn't even have itunes on my computer. Isn't multitasking one of the Palm patents?
I'm sticking with webOS until at least the next generation hardware. (That's assuming it's out in a reasonable time-frame, which for me would be before Q1 2011.)
The OS has just got too much going for it, and while the gnawing technophile in me says "gimme, gimme, gimme" to a better processor, a higher res screen, more memory, expansion memory, and so on, the truth is that the Pre's form-factor is just about perfect for me. While Palm can improve the hardware and specs, I honestly cannot imagine how they can improve the form-factor.
I'm staying because of TRUE multitasking (not requiring additional API's), the awesome homebrew community here at PreCentral, Webos-internals, and Palm and HP's next WebOS phone.
I am sticking with my Palm Pre plus. I am waiting for the new Palm Pre to come out.
Besides I am a developer now and have released an app and waiting for the second one to be approved. The dev community is great, much better then the others.
Go to ATT?!? Hahahahaha... you can't be serious! My friend is a huge Apple fan (but not annoyingly so) and he is praying for a Verizon iPhone... not so he can go to Verizon, but because he thinks the masses will leave ATT for Verizon, leaving him with much improved (depoplulated) ATT network.
IM poor and I cant afford another phone. Plus I dont want to be restricted by apple and switch to gay at&t that more than limit your bandwidth.
gay-T&T?
didn't know phone carriers had sexual prefrences. must have missed the memo.
Sticking with my Pre over the iPhone/EVO
1. The network (Sprint)
2. Physical QWERTY
3. An open OS
4. Real multitasking
5. A graceful sensible, wee designed UI
It's such a cute, "wee designed UI"!
I'm staying. There is no OS like a webOS. Definitely ready for new hardware, as I've had my Pre since launch day. It's hard seeing the EVO and iPhone, with video chat, but I'm hopeful that HP sees the importance of such functionality. I'm certain HP is excited about showing us what's next!
I'm sticking with the superior OS. Sure, the iphone 4 is a nice piece of hardware, but that's all it is, hardware. WebOS is bound to get upgraded hardware soon, so I'm not too concerned. I'll probably get the Evo to tide me over the hardware lust, but without a doubt, webOS is my mobile OS of choice for the forseeable future, so I'll be getting whatever new hardware they put out, whenever they put it out.
Stick to Pre! and wait for good news from HPalm.
iPhone 4 too expensive for me. More over.. multitasking card view on WebOS can't be found at any other mobile OS.
Team Palm!
Sticking with my Pixi!!!
However what i really want is the Iphone4 hardware, shell, body or whatever you wanna call it, only difference a 3.7" screen instead of 3.5" But with webos, and a gesture area relplacing the button on the the bottom. That would be super duper sick. (oh and of course hdmi instead of apple connector
Give me that with a webos 2.0 that has
- voice commands(i hope palm holded off on voicedialing to perfrect, maybe like, incorporate it to universal search.)
-more customization options, much much more.
-GPU enabled
-many more new features that are true to webos origins.
with sprint and the palm pre, why would anyone start drinking the kool-aid? i stopped doing that when i was 5.
i love my pre and excitedly wait for future hardware, os, and other updates to the palm/hp webos line up.
Dieter,
That Palm Pre in the pic you used... looks so sad... like its got it's head down... dejected next to the iPhone 4.
Why is the iFauxn so much larger in the photo? (conspiracy cap on) Is this some sort of subliminal dominance thing? (conspiracy cap off)
No I don't think so. Nothing Subliminal to me. :)
I'm sticking with Palm. Their embracing of the homebrew community has been remarkable IMO. I love the openness and willingness to work with developers to advance the platform, it's inspiring to me. Plus, I'm completely hooked on webOS.. I don't even want to think of having a mobile device without it.
I guess it really brings me back to my Amiga days. I loved that platform.. the powerful, under appreciated underdog with a great community behind it. I stuck with the Amiga till the bitter end, and I'll be with Palm until the bitter end.
I am staying with my Pre...I have a ipod with the new iOS4 and I HATE it. But if people don't know about what the Pre does, they will be brainwashed into thinking that the iphone is IT. And its not. Plus who would be stupid enough to switch to at&t? If you have rolls of dough, I do wish you luck. In the real world there are people with families, struggling students and normal folks who can't afford the plans and the problems.
I have a strong feeling HP and Palm will blow them out of the water really soon. Because with HP's cash and Palm's IP and new OS things are bound to turn around. Have faith...
I'm keeping my pre.
I'm not keeping it cause it's awesome.e
I'm keeping it 'cause I don't want to pay the etf fee and get a worse discount on at&t.
but lets be honest, functionality and apps are limited.
can I donnect to a bluetooth serial port? Not yet? Can I connect to a bluetooth wifi ad-hoc mode? No. Is there a prog to get my gas mileage for my car (using these ports)? No. Can I make one? No because there no comm. Protocol for that? Can the iphone? Yes. Can the iphone show me constellations in the sky as I point my phone? Yes. Can webos? Not yet.
can I type faster on the iphone? Yes. With less pain too. Is the iphone sturdier than my sprint pre? Yes. Will I get a tmc error ever? No. Does the battery kick this one's behind? Yes. Can I vid conference w iphone? Yes. Does it have abigger screen? Yes. Does it document edit? Yes.
can I straight run linux? No.
is there a homebrew? Not unless you jb the phone but would I NEED to homebrew my phone to do what I need it to do and well? BIG NO.
until native linux apps run smooth like glass on this phone I am considering it to be at a serious disadvantage to the iphone except for carrier, even then at least the iphone is a world phone.
for now I keep my phone but I feel pretty left behind palm.
thank you
This is what i don't understand, So you buy a phone for a year or so. Spend another 100$ on Apps, and then switch phones so you have to spend another $200 on Apps on that platform.
I wouldn't say that I'm cheap, but before i got the Pre. I had a Palm Treo 680, This was a old phone and everyone made fun of me for having such a huge phone. but i stuck it out cause nothing on the market was as good, Yes iphone had lots of APPS but the PalmOS still in my mind is a better OS then ios.lol.
So when i bought this Palm Pre I bought it cause i knew i was going to use the phone for 5+ years. I don't look at a phone as a toy anymore, I look at it as an investment into my life. so now once i have all the apps i have, I don't see the need to switch over to the iphone or android just cause they came outwith something knew. i'm not that much of a tech geek.
+1
I will stick with Sprint. No one can beat the price & that's important to me. I also absolutely LOVE WebOS!! The experience of using this device has really changed my expectations for future devices. I've thougt about switching to Evo, but I really think i'd miss the fluidity/simplicity of my Pre. I don't in any way think the Pre is perfect, in fact I think it has it's downsides (constant hardware fragility & lack of strong consumer support = fewer awesome apps). The only thing I am envious of my Apple toting friends is all their fancy pants apps, I still have hope that HP will help Palm's marketshare w/ ad support & such, but it really comes down to what's next for them. It's only been a year, but I'm anxious for a new WebOS device (on Sprint of course).
Well, yesterday I would have switched... probably not an iPhone, but likely to the Evo. My Pre is now back in the repair centre today (touch screen stopped recognising touch) and this will be the 2nd time this year.
Don't get me wrong, I am a long time Palm supporter. My Treo 650 is my backup phone and I can't remember how old it is! But it has never had to be repaired! Its the hardware that lets down the Pre for me hence my almost decision to jump...
Hopefully the rumours of a new device later this year will mean more hardware reliability!
I live in hope!
Never in a million years will I even consider an iPhone, or for that matter anything with iOS on it...
Also, please HPalm, no HUGE screens... seriously, I would never go with a huge phone like the evo/droid X
I agree. Anything over 3.7 inches is too big. I prefer no more than 3.5 inches
agreed... Up the resolution and screen quality, and leave the larger screens for Tablets / mini tablets...
Not sure I'd want to lug a big screen around all week when my primary need is to be in touch. If I want big video, I stuff my Archos in the bag. That's the place for Android, simple tasks for a simple system. Let WebOS do the important stuff.
Linux is the shit!
I am staying. In the end a phone is a phone is a phone. The reality is they are both great devices but the iphone 4 has the edge at the moment in performance. That said they both do the same basic task with each having its own advantages and disadvantages. The iphones advantages certainly do not over come the disadvantages for me.
Familiarity also goes a long ways. I have become used (spoiled) with the WebOS interface. I have tastily played with both iphone and android phones and they are just not nearly as intuitive as WebOS. I would consider Nokia's new OS if Palm doesn't make a move in the first part of 2011. At that point most phones OS performance speed will be far superior to WebOS.
I can't see leaving WebOS to an OS that almost seems antique now... with shiney new Pseudo-Tasking
I, like iPhone users, am also a bit tied to my OS because of my App Catalog purchases. I would hate to switch and essentially throw away the money I spent, just to spend even more money getting some of the programs back on another OS.
Palm/HP have done a brilliant move in the 50% App Sale.
1) Builds App/OS Loyalty (or fear of wasted money)
2) Rewards existing Developers
3) Potentially entices even more developers to convert their Apps
a) Palm has made it a simple 1/2 hour process in most cases
b) Programs come mult-taskable without special programming/hours of work
4) Most likely will help the App Catalog increase in size rapidly... even if a chunk are "cookie cutter" books/apps/quotes --> looking at you brighthouse labs amoung others
Yes the hardware is good, but it is not really anything special except maybe the screen. It is what the new standard is.
As for my current hardware - Sprint Pre - I am doing just fine...
1) I have the F102 overclock kernal
- completely killed the Too Many Cards error
- I can have multiple 3D games open along with other Apps
- WebOS is almost as zippy as the Pre Plus
2) I have patched most/any of the current shortcomings and added a lot of nifty features/layout changes to WebOS
3) I am so grateful to have TRUE multi-tasking
4) I have hopes for a brighter future and new device announcement after the merger is completed
5) Can't beat the price I am paying for Unlimited Data in a Family plan PLUS 25% discount through my employer... Can you give me any good reason to switch carriers... unless you are a world traveler regularly?
We just need Voice Activation, Visual Voicemail, and a few other "now" standard features.
Give us hardware at least on Par with the EVO, if not better w/ a 3.7" to 4" screen, and I think you have a clear winner.
I can only hope that the future WebOS updates and the Hardware to come can finally out-shine the competition and bring WebOS to the forefront of discussions where it belongs.
I am not as intelligent on smartphones as half you folk in here. And honestly I was looking at purchasing an iPhone when some told me about Palm and the Pre last June. Never owned a Palm device before. I just want a reliable smartphone. Does what it says it will do and has some sweet features to boot.
The iPhone 4 is pretty tempting. I like the smoothness of the older 3Gs and it's snappiness. My Pre lags a bit more than I like. However, I'm hanging around. Was going to switch carrriers so I could get the best of both worlds iphone + pre plus. But ATT plan can't beat sprint's.
palm needs to get it baked right next webos phone. Hardware, processor, apps, all the essentials. I don't want an iphone killer. I just want a phone that lets the competition know hey we're Palm we started the revolution and we are bringing it. I also believe webos has great potential. Counting the months ahead until something new. Go HPalm.
well said...go HPalm!!!
i looked at the new iphone, i would never switch to iphone os and i would never go to at&t. i also thought about the htc evo, but i couldnt let my pre go. i knew i was going to miss webos as soon as i switched to the evo. both the evo and ihpone 4 still dont have TRUE multitasking like my pre does, and i just cant wait until the next pre comes out. ill be first in line for that shit!
I'm sticking with my Pre for now, but the iPhone4 is kind of tempting. I was waiting for them to get rid of that awful curved-back design, and their new form factor is nice. The technology is finally up to most modern standards, and that screen is really nice. I just don't think there's enough appeal for me to break contract or give up on Palm's huge potential yet. HP is going to do great things with WebOS, and I don't want to miss out on that by selling my soul to Apple & AT&T. So I'm holding out for bigger and better things.
The Competition? The pre isn't even the same category any more the iphone shits on the pre anyday.
I love my Pre. The internal hardware isn't great compared to the phones that have come out in the last month. I love the size and design of the Pre. I was tempted to switch to the Droid 2 but HPalm gave us WebOS lovers a bone. New Hardware and updated OS is keeping me with Palm. I have a feeling the next phone Palm comes out with will blow the iPhone and any Android phone away.
It's hard to work without multi-tasking once you've had it. But if HPalm doesn't drop a huge bomb after the acquisition, I don't know that I can stand to be passed up by new technologies. WebOS started off great but the development pace needs a push.
I am sticking with my pre plus, especially after reading that article. The article seemed like a "Why you don't want to switch after all" type article to me. Honestly I was never considering switching anyway, I like to live in a free OS, not a dictatorship.
I did consider the iPhone before the Pre was announced. But then the Pre became the best fit for me (never got used to the "jumping in-and-out of apps" on my iPod touch anyways).
iPhone 4 is a very nice piece of hardware, made me slightly consider for a sec when the "left-at-bar" iPhone was leaked. Well, AT&T's new data plans effectively throw any considerations out the window.
First of all, a 1GB cap is just too low (and consider the fact that texting and navigation are all additional charges). I know I average around 200~600MB per month on my Pre, but I hate the feeling of having to check my quota before launching Google maps.
Second, the need for this low data threshold confirms that AT&T's network could not handle any more data traffic without this drastic measure. I take this as a sign that the network is unreliable.
If the next webOS phone had the "no-plastic" build and quality of the iPhone4, and it's on Sprint, I'd be all over it :)
Why am I switching? Because I have the carry both my 2nd gen iPod touch and my pre, if I use the pre for much of anything the battery dies much much quicker. So iPhone 4 it is for me, sorry Palm. I wanted to be friends.
One more thing...HP WILL help in the app department for the Pre. When I went scouting for a new desktop all the HP desktops and laptops have high end apps. They have the muscle to bring in developers for the next generation Pre, to build for the platform. Meow meow...they are watching looking and learning.
Be patient and wait. Its coming : )
Sticking with my Pre + Sprint. Still liking my pre just fine. As usual waiting for the "Next Big Thing".

Sticking with my Pre + Sprint. Still liking my pre just fine. As usual waiting for the "Next Big Thing" hardware wise from HP\Palm.
Assuming that the "Next Big Thing" is even released on Sprint. What if it is only released on VZW and AT&T?
I fear that Sprint has burned their bridges with Palm by throwing them under the bus by blaming them completely for the problems that they had with the Pre. Why else is an inferior device (the Sprint Pre) still at $149? I fear that it is Sprints way of still slapping Palm in the face...
All that we take for granted on the Pre becomes so obviously lacking on the IPhone that it renders it almost useless to an experienced Pre user.. So beware IPhone users if you get to experience a Pre!!
Just like every other new device it seems, great hardware, but the OS is way too lacking for a webOS user. No way I could ever switch from webOS ;)
I pre-ordered the iPhone 4. It's on a truck now waiting to be delivered, and I keep hitting refresh on my browser over and over. I can't wait for it to show up, because once it does I'll be calling AT&T to cancel my service right away. It's a development phone. I can't wait for palm to come out with a new device, cause I'll be there in line for it and that will be the phone I use on a daily basis.
I'll stick with Palm Pre until Palm Pre 2 comes out.
The Pre is dated now. Ive stuck with Palm 8 years. Im upset that everyone else is updating with technology more rapidly. Life is short I cant wait any longer for a company that doesnt care about our needs. I still have not contact categories WTF! Im going to have Fun and sell out. Good Bye Palm. Hello HTC EVO! Ill come back to Palm when they get their sh*t together.
Do you really need a guide to switch to iPhone? My 2-year can use that phone, although she throws a tantrum when her calls are repeatedly dropped. I hope she doesn't break the Monkey Glass on it when the wife gets the new one.
In all seriousness, it's a well-done article pointing out how to handle some of the things you'll miss when switching.
I'm definitely staying, because I love having something that gets better and better on a weekly basis EVEN in a dead period like we're in now (thanks to the awesome Palm community in general and Webos Internals specifically).
I'm excited to see what Palm/HP has up its sleeve after the acquisition is finalized, but if its a bust, I'll switch to Android.
Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to playing with the new toy if my wife can ever actually order and get one. Might be next year if she wants the white one...
Honestly this seems kind of silly to me.
If you just look at the specs, there is NO competition -- the new iPhone blows the doors off the Pre, no doubt. Anyone who denies this is a fanboy and can't be convinced of anything.
Now, what this does NOT mean is that everyone who has a Pre is going to be lining up for new iPhone. There are lots of comments above indicating this for various reasons. The question posed "Are you leaving your Pre for the new iPhone?" at its heart is a silly one. The majority of the people who you asked the question to are not on AT&T, therefore it would cause a shift in carriers and typically higher cost for a plan.
The real question should have been "If you are an AT&T Palm Pre Plus or Pixi Plus user, would you make the jump right now?"
I am on Sprint and would never consider the jump to AT&T, but if the new iPhone were released on Sprint, I would consider it strongly in regards to the EVO and Pre.
What this question is essentially doing is going to a union meeting of the UAW workers at Ford and asking "Hey, look at this brand new Chevy truck that was just released, how many of you are turning in your Fords to jump into the Chevy?"
It's simpler than that really. What the question does is generate hits for the site. :-)
Yo homeboy check out My Palm Pre! Look at this hot program I got. Oh damnn. Sorry "Too Many Cards Error". Hold on, let me reboot real quick.
But here, I got a screen shot of it, let me just open my Photos app and show you....oh crap wait a minute, I have to load the app........and wait.......now I have to tap on Photo Roll.........and wait........now I have to tap the picture, and you can see a low res version of it, but just.........wait........there it is! Isn't it beautiful?
Shiny and pretty as it may be, the only way the iPhone would remotely tempt me is if I could get it on Sprint. Cost of ownership on AT&T is too high to justify not having WebOS. iOS is great for media and apps, but I want my phone to be a communication device first and foremost, and WebOS notifications go a long way to making it better for that. (That and we've had better e-mail for a year now).
"Cold, hard fact: there are likely going to be more than a few people switching from a webOS phone to the forthcoming iPhone 4
My two cents...
The iphone hardware is amazing (come on guys let's admit it), the picture quality is excellent, form factor is beautiful, and the quality i.e the chrager port compared to my palms plastic door that has broken off now on two of my pre-s! The only factors keeping me with sprint/pre are... 1. WebOS (thus far this is one of the best smart-phone OS), 2. Physical KB (although I have been thinking about going with a BB bold from sprint, #1 helps me to stay), Sprint plans (thus far are the cheapest and they have free roaming, can't beat that and since I live in the DC area - hell cell phone coverage on the major providers are everywhere!) 3. Palm mission was to be the best smart-phone manufacturer out there (although this seems to have gotten lost in their sauce!) ...
But for now I am holding on to having a physical KB and WebOS... BUT PALM Pls give me hardware that doesn't look like a mold from a china factory that makes knock off electronics for Canal ST, NY!
Staying.
Why?
-Notifications
-Multi-tasking (yes I know the iphone now has it, but it's not buttery smooove like webos...card view just rocks!)
-Best data plan (Sprint) and no data cap (well no data cap until you get past 5gb...haha)
-Keyboard
-Gesture area
In a nutshell, staying because of WebOS.
The hardware is another story. I installed the Uber patch about 2 mos ago and it's been so-so - it's blazing fast, but my camera freezes on launch more than half the time and I get the TMC error more often. I'm hoping that the next WebOS device will have the muscle power. If not, I might consider jumping over to whatever post-EVO device comes out.
You should really consider changing to the F102 Kernal with Compache. I haven't had any Too Many Cards errors since.
I think it may even be incorprated into the kernal patch available in Preware now. - not positive though.
I loves me some Compcache!!!
I've read about that patch update. Sorry about sounding like a noob, but how do I update what I presently have??
Thanks
Al
You just have to uninstall your existing "modified" kernel.
Then you can install a new one... F102 installed with a .IPK file.
I think you can even do it all on Preware... They have a standard kernal avaible for install, then you can reboot and install the modified one... I believe
ohh no you didn't ;-) dieter !
I will chime in on this one when I get time later..... WEBOS !
I've been with Sprint for the past decade, am a big fan of Samsung's rugged series of phones, which by the way, had task switching "multi-tasking" years before WebOS or iPhoneOS got them. There's not a chance I would lose unlimited data, messaging, gps, Sprint TV, and actual 3G data support for the pathetic offerings from at&t and Verizon.
As a side note, I used to work in at&t's laptop connect support group, when we would want to get online with our personal laptops I'd use my iBook to share out my Sprint 3G service, because at&t's 3G wasn't available with decent signal there, and couldn't handle the traffic from 5 people surfing at the same time.
As for WebOS, I love Palm's work, still have my US Robotics Palm Pilot, still works. When the Pre and WebOS were announced I even bought stock in Palm. Sadly I now have to go vote on if I agree or disagree with the sale to HP.
IMHO, webOS still is lacking APIs necessary to build some fundamental applications that I require (FTP, SSH, RDP, VNC, VNP, app access to Calendar, app access to filesystem, voice/call recording, voice dialing, etc.)
Speaking strictly for myself, give me those apps and I will be more patient for newer hardware. Right now, to get access to those apps, I would have to switch to a new platform (iFauxnOS, Android, WinMob, etc.)
I DO NOT WANT TO SWITCH! I love webOS and what potential it offers, but I need the APIs to get released so the app developers can close the "great app divide" between webOS and the competition.
It's been a few days that I'm really thinking about keeping my Pre or switching to EVO or getting the iPhone 4.
I love my pre, the UI, the fabulous multitask, how easy it is to navigate, the phone is small, its got a real keyboard, I like the design.
Now there are a few things that bothers me. First, even with 800mhz patch, it's slow, sometimes it would freeze for a few seconds, the infamous too many cards error, browsing internet is no so easy either, pages are really slow to load (if they load). The app catalog is quite small too, I wish webOS was more popular so we could have apps like on the iphone. It bothers me to go on mint.com, citi, and numerous other sites where there's only an app for iphone or android and no webos.
I went to the sprint store yesterday to get my pre fixed (stupid phone stuck on headset mode for 10 days now) and I played with the EVO.
I really liked it, browsing internet is a bliss, high resolution screen really changes everything. It was also super fast and very responsive but something about the UI and the way you handle multiple tasks at the same bothered me. After playing 10 minutes with it I was missing my webOS, sliding cards and tossing them away is just genius to me.
For the iPhone4 I don't know yet, a friend is getting his tomorrow. I like the iphone for it's huge app catalog but the phone itself i'm not sure. First it's way too proprietary, apple is like the government in your pocket. You can't install patches, hacks and other stuff to make it better. They only release updates when they release a new phone, pretty dumb to me. The multitask seems pretty rudimentary to me too, you can have more than one app at the same time but they don't update in the background.
So to finish I think I'm going to stick with my pre for a few months hoping that soon we will hear from a HP saying that they are releasing a new webOS phone with hi-def screen, better hardware, faster and all then it can be the best phone on the planet.
I will stay, at least for now. But I must say iPhone 4 is very tempting. I still have 2 months before I can upgrade and over a year on my contract. I will at least wait until the next WebOS device comes out. Hopefully, it has enough new features to keep me stay.
Reasons to stay:
* Sprint plan
* Synergy, but now iOS 4 also can handle multiple email accounts, it is less a draw for me to stay.
* Size. I love more features, but I don't like the trend of phones getter bigger. This is not a big reason against iPhone, but more against Evo and some big Android phones.
Reasons for me to switch:
* Better hardware
* Chinese input methods
I have had the Palm Pre from the first day it was for sale. After over a year, I still love the phone. I also
Try a paragraph, then I'll read it
I actually did have paragraph when I clicked save but they disappeared....
Your numbers for AT&T however do not include text messaging, for which unlimited will tack on another $20. Or 15 for 1500.
Pound for pound, byte for byte, text for text, phone call for phone call (remember sprint is unlmtd mobile minutes) sprint is cheaper.
Maybe not by much, but the more I read about at&t's nickel and dime'ing, the happier i am with sprint.
One thing that you need to consider is the WebOS 1.4.5 update which may very well come with hundreds of new apps for the Pre and Pixi devices due to the PDK apps that are ready for release. I've not run into many problems when it comes to the music player on my AT&T Palm Pre Plus, though to be fair, I use Pandora more often so may have missed something.
Now, this may shock some people on Sprint, but that "fast" 4G is generally beaten or on par with the 3.6mbps we can get on the Pre Plus on AT&T, and is much slower than the 7.2mbps AT&T service that AT&T is currently deploying that you can get on certain devices including the iPhone. Since 3.6mbps is fast enough for my needs, the Pre Plus is an acceptable solution for me.
I do feel that I may just pay the ETF to let me upgrade to the new HPalm device when it comes out for AT&T...whenever that may be. If it is this summer, then I may be able to convince my wife to take my current Pre Plus rather than buying an iPhone 4.
Looks like I will be leaving the Pre's WobOS for the EVO-4G. I'm really SICK of HOPING and WAITING while every one else gets new phones with massive screens and cool apps. I'm so used to waiting that I don't mind waiting for a year (after I've used my EVO 4G) to get the next webOS phone that's out. I bet there still won't be anything out at that time. lol.
Just got the Pre Plus this week to replace a Blackberry. Sticking with the Pre until it dies. It serves all of my business and personal needs and once I get an extended battery, I'm done.
None of the iPhone versions have ever impressed me because none of them meet my needs and I'm not willing to settle for what Steve Jobs is willing to give me. I need a replaceable battery, physical keyboard, and I want Flash (which is coming to the Pre), and Jobs isn't giving any of that up. I'm already on AT&T, so the network isn't an issue for me. The control freakery at the iTunes store is neither here nor there because control of a platform does create a consistent user experience, so that isn't a factor to me either. The Pre Plus does everything I need a smart phone to do and then some and I am quite satisfied with it.
People say they have the Palm Pre on Sprint because they can't afford the iPhone on ATT. I can definitely afford the iPhone if I want to. Now, is the iPhone better than the Palm Pre. I'd say overall, it is. However, I put a price value on everything I buy. My family plan on sprint with two Palm Pres for two people unlimited data, 1500 mins, free calls to any cell phone, unlimited text is only $90. Now lets see, for two iPhones... can't get unlimited data anymore if I wanted to switch. Unlimited texting is $20 (don't get started about the free text programs, it's not the same because some people think the messages are spam the way it displays on phone). Minutes are nowhere near close ( granted, I don't use all my minutes either, but its nice to know that I have them if need be). One thing iPhone does have over the Palm Pre is a ton more apps. So lets see, per month for two people is probably close to $160 or so? Over the course of two years, I'd be paying $3,840 vs $2,160 for the Palm Pre. No way I am paying close to $1700 more for the iPhone. Do other people really think the iPhone is worth that much more money?
I think you're confusing what people can afford with what they're willing to pay. I can certainly afford to pay $5 to buy a banana. Am I going to? No effing way. I could afford to drop $e00/month on my cellphone bill, but no way do I think that cell service, no matter what else is tacked on, is worth that much.
how do you pay 90 dolars for all that? Please see my post in forums under cdma phones! Thanks!
Staying with Pre for 3 reasons.
-Sprint is the best.
-Apple is evil.
-Palm's webOS is unmatched.
Sure, I feel impatient waiting for next device from Palm sometimes. However, in the end, it will be here and I need my upgrade discount to be ready for it.
I had the opportunity a few months back to basically trade my Palm Pre for an iPhone 3GS. Even though I still love WebOS and check this site at least daily, I am very happy with the 3GS. I intend on passing down the 3GS to my wife and getting the new iPhone 4 when available in Canada. I haven't tried a Pre Plus, but playing with the Pre after spending so much time with the 3GS, for being the same processor, I can't believe how sluggish the Pre feels. Palm needs to come out with a 2.0 software and have it optimized for speed (plus many more updates I am sure they have in their back of tricks).
I love that screen on the iPhone, but I was more tempted by the EVO. I am sticking with Sprint and Palm through the Cup finals at least.
Like many of you have said, the iphone hardware is top of the line. But webos is far superior over the ios. As soon as webos gets new hardware it'll be on top.
Never even thought about the iPhone. I did read a review and was alittle jealous of the number of apps they have. Many are probably crap, just as we deal with many quotes, etc, apps.
I am fairly happy with Sprint, have had Palm for years and am fairly happy with them. Is there room for improvement for both? Yes, but not enough that I am going to jump ship.
Would love to see Palm put out a new phone surpassing the EVO and iPhone soon, maybe in 6 months or so. PleaseeeeEEEEeeeeeEEEEeeeee.
I can't blame people for being dazzled by the iPhone hardware, but you don't need all that speed and beautiful screen to make a phone call. Think about it.
The best combo is a WebOS phone with an iPod Touch! Best of both worlds! (and waaay cheaper!)
I am an avid precentral reader, and a HUGE palm fan, but I do not own a Palm Pre. Why? Because last spring, sprint allowed me to keep my grandfathered (much cheaper) data plan if I got a BB Curve instead. I actually bought it on Pre launch day. lol.
With that said, I sincerely regret my decision. I am now stuck in limbo. I hate my Curve, but I am afraid to sign another contract and miss out on a new awesome Palm phone.
So here are my options:
1) Keep my horrible BB and HOPE palm comes out with a new, better phone FOR SPRINT.
2) Get the EVO. I don't like Google, but it really seems like a much better device than the original Pre. If I switch, I will likely regret it.
3) Switch to AT&T for the iPhone. I am a web designer and tend to LOVE apple products, but I loved Palm first. Plus I really don't want to pay more for less with AT&T.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Wait six weeks and see what Palm/HP announce after the merger. A year is a long time to hate an android slab, and Iphone 4 will be easy pickin's if you don't like what Palm offers or they're keeping mum.
They'll make an announcement when the signatures are on the merger are complete. A Curve, ouch. Have one, it's fine for email, ok as phone, that's pretty much it.

I don't do AT&T so I can't advise you on that. Rather than offering more biased suggestions, I suggest trying the EVO (or any other device that catches your eye) on Sprint for yourself. They give you 30 days to try it. If you don't like it, you can return it with no problems. If you don't want to mess with your current plan, you can open a new line with them and kill it off when you're done with your trial.
The point is, take advantage of a trial so that you know if something works for you rather than listening to some stranger telling you to wait for Palm or get device A vs device B. There is no gaurantee that you'll like what Palm offers next since there is no official info on what that will be or if it will ever happen.
Edit: I should add that this advice only applies if you are eligible for an upgrade. I have yet to see a phone that's worth paying an EFT for. :-)
I see no advantage in a device that can't be functional without a companion PC. I see no advantage to virtual over physical keyboards. I see nothing but disadvantages to a portable device without a user replaceable battery. I see no advantage or even anything useful in having AT&T as a carrier. I see nothing but a disadvantage in a device that doesn't offer inductive charging.
I also see no advantage in throwing away $150+ in app purchases.
The Pre is getting a little dated and could use both OS & hardware updates. But it meets my needs and the majority of my wants.
Don't forget that there is no advantage in a phone that loses signal when you hold it.
