Contest: Mock-up the next Palm device ...and win it! 116

by Derek Kessler Thu, 30 Sep 2010 2:50 pm EDT

3D mock-up

We’re sort of in limbo right now, waiting for Palm to announce, well, anything. We’ve had rumors, minor leaks, and insinuations here and there, but not a full-on iPhone 4-style leak. So what the next Palm device might look like or do is still kind of up in the stratosphere.

As such, we’ve decided to have a little fun. We want you to show us what you want the next Palm device to look like. And we want you to be creative. It doesn’t have to be a Photoshop job. You can make a video, whittle a model out of pine, shoot us telepathic visions of what you see (bonus points for that, by the way), or whatever else your heart desires.

Just two requirements. One: be visual. Two: be creative. To encourage this creativity, we’re going to make this whole deal a contest: show us what you think the next Palm device should be and we’ll put the best up to a vote. The top vote getter wins... drumroll please... the next Palm device. Whatever it is. Sweet, eh? Head on past the break for the sweet hot details.

This contest is open to all US residents aged 18 or older (blame pesky contest laws); non-US residents, Smartphone Experts contractors and employees, and those under 18 may submit entries, but will be disqualified from winning. Really, we know you want to show off even if you can’t win. Entries must be the original work of the contestant, those submitting copied work will be disqualified and sent to the principal. We’ve seen all the mock-ups already out there, trust us, we’ll know.

Entries must be received by Midnight Eastern, 15 October 2010. Only one entry per person may be submitted - if you submit multiples, we'll go with the last you submit (so just wait if you think you can do better). We may choose to share some of the truly unique entries along the way, so be creative. Upon closing of submissions the PreCentral team will choose several of the best submissions to be voted on by you, the public. By 'best' we mean some combination of most intriguing concept, most accurate, prettiest, funniest, and coolest. You know, Quality.

The entry that receives the most votes will be awarded with whatever device Palm releases next, be it a smartphone, tablet, or toaster. The second-place and third-place entrants will each receive a gift certificate good for $50 in the PreCentral Store.

Alright, still interested? You know you are. Whip up your best and send it to contest@precentral.net. Remember, you have until midnight on 15 October 2010 to submit your amazing Palm device mock-ups. We'll start the voting the week after and announce the winner the week after that!

Get to it!

Wish I was creative enough to do this, but one thing's for sure, I hope that picture above does not end up winning. That looks like a phone only it's manufacturer could love...

Haha, It does look 'kinda' slick tho, super thin!

I think I would throw up if that phone ever made it to production...

Anyway, I submitted my Palm concept phone to precentral. Hopefully I win. I would love to have the next Palm phone or tablet for free. My only worry is that it wouldn't be made for Sprint's network. If it's not then I would probably just sell it or try to mod it to work on Sprint.

I know, right? It looks about 5mm bigger than the EVO.

JK JK, seriously, that thing looks the size of a Kindle. DNW.

With a coffee cup next to it (upper left)? To me, it looks smaller than the current Pre...

this phone looks like something that came out 5 years ago.

Take a look at the fingerprints it looks like it's just short of 3" long when compacted. I love this mock up but I'm hoping the new device is larger than the Pre; skinnier but more screen area.

Its the Kin resKined.... see what I did there?

I plan to take full advantage of the extra points offer on shooting telepathic visions without any requirement for the visions actually being received. I will shoot them. :)

Instead of shooting good ideas to PreCentral, bombard Steve Jobs with your stupidest ones.

Hahaha

Super thin looks nice, lets hope it doesn't cause easier oreo effects

So if the next Palm device is a $1200 PalmPad, you'll give me one? Cool! In that case, I'll be using the telepathic method, and you should expect to receive my entry on or around the 12th. So when you think of a REALLY cool looking Palm device that week that blows everything else out of the water, that's my entry!

That is a hideous phone in the picture.

For me - just imagine the Pre with a 3.75" screen. Add some nice specs and hardware quality improvements and you've got me in line to buy.

Can I draw it on CAD?

Whatever you want, man.

I think the mock phone in the article is a pretty good start. The only thing I might add , beside some slight design tweak, is the ability to rotate the screen 90' once it has been slid out. So you can choose either portrait or landscape while using the same keyboard.
I don't know if you designed this phone but if you add a pic with a rotated screen I think you may have a winner.

I wish I had a more experienced skill set working with photo editing programs and design. I have been reading and getting the ideas that the vast majority of people would love to have for the next palm phone and would love to show what I have in mind with all these ideas.

Your pic shows a Sprint device but it was reported yesterday that it is coming to Verizon first. ;)

Actually, what was reported yesterday was that there is a rumor it will be coming to VZW. That doesn't preclude another carrier getting it first or simultaneously. Plus, it's a rumor.
VZW wouldn't make much sense for a launch partner. They effed Palm over on the Pre Plus launch and are very heavily invested in their Droid lineup.

for a minute there i thought that pic was the actual palm pre 2

If, the next Palm Pre looks like that mockup, say good bye to WebOS smartphones. Smartphones have to look cool! They are no longer just devices to do everything with. Perception is everything and if your smartphone doesn't have that quality look and feel like the Iphone, then you lose!! You will not be cool no matter what your phone can do. Has anyone paid attention to the new Blackberry Torch, that phone has a great quality feel to it, but still not quite cool looking enough! Palm, can keep the Pre form factor, but it needs to be bigger (screensize) but thinner and needs to have a gun-metal like finish or some kind of well-placed metal accents that not only look really topnotch, but adds to the phone's durability! I love the idea of having real and visible titanium reinforcements on my phone. I don't want something that has metal looking paint on it that will just rub off and look plasticky. Give me a quality handset with a portait keyboard and soft landscape keyboard... ! 1gig of RAM is good and 16gb memory with a memory card slot, i like the curved glass screen idea! just please dont make it that crackyplastic(crackstic) stuff on the current Pre. Cmon Palm, gimme the Mercedes of Smartphones. I will gladly pay more for it if its top notch. I want to be able to sell my Pre2 on Ebay and make nearly what i bought it for when the Pre 3 comes out. If the Iphone 3gs can still be sold for 300 after the iphone 4 came out, then they are doing something right. I'm not saying make me an Apple phone, but I am saying i want that Apple perfectionism and quality in my next Palm phone! This is not just a phone guys, it's my mini-mobile laptop and as such, it should not be perishable within 6 months!!!

One word: Paragraphs. I can't even read that.

Are you able to read, because it's written with English words with English alphabet! Doesn't need to be broken into paragraphs as it's bascially one subject from beginning to end. However, you can skip it if it's too much for you. It won't hurt my feelings..LOL!

It's unreadable. Paragraphs are important for visually breaking up something that is written (or read). Doesn't matter if it's in English or Farsi, most people are gonna skip that. Try reading an article with no paragraphs some time.

Oh boo-frickin-hoo. If you're going to complain about the act of reading then stay off the internet, 'cause you have to do a lot of that here.

Really? I hadn't noticed. Maybe you should work on your reading comprehension so you might understand what was being talked about since you obviously don't get it.

I agree with what you have to say. Funny thing is. I didn't even finish the long post from above because of the reason that it wasn't broken into paragraphs. It is way too long for just 1 paragraph. Anyway, I love WebOS and all I need in the next WebOS device is more power, bigger screen, and better build quality.

If the next Palm Pre looks like that mockup, say good bye to WebOS smartphones. Smartphones have to look cool! They are no longer just devices to do everything with. Perception is everything and if your smartphone doesn't have that quality look and feel like the iPhone, then you lose! You will not be cool no matter what your phone can do.

Give me a quality handset with a portait keyboard and soft landscape keyboard! 1GB of RAM is good; add to it 16GB more with a memory card slot (the original author clearly has system memory and flash memory confused). I like the curved glass screen idea! Just please dont make it that crackyplastic (crackstic) stuff on the current Pre.

C'mon Palm, gimme the Mercedes of Smartphones. I will gladly pay more for it if it's top notch. I want to be able to sell my Pre2 on eBay and make nearly what i bought it for when the Pre3 comes out. "One word: Paragraphs. I can't even read that."

Along these lines: it would make this site a whole lot more readable to increase the line-height, and decrease the contrast (make the text more gray - less black).

Whatever.

I totally agree.

You should always separate a point using paragraphs to clearly move the reader to the next point being made.

It helps to read things better.

It also helps prevent tunnel vision when reading your comment.

Am I separating my paragraphs too much?.....

Agreed, i Read like 2/3 sentences then dropped down to the next and ten times more awesome reply..
..learn sum mofo grammaer,.-/:;()!?,.&$!', its there for a reason...the season of the siccness

I wanna get the next webOS device, lubed the pre but it got outdated too quick, so i got the evo...if the device above or similar is the next then im staying away..i like hardware keyboards but when you got a 4.3 in screen you can live with a virtual keyboard

"By 'best' we mean some combination of most intriguing concept, MOST ACCURATE, prettiest, funniest, and coolest. You know, Quality."

Hmm does someone have the inside scoop on the next Palm device....I wonder lol

The phone isn't that bad in the photo there. I think anyways. The keyboard looks nice.

I don't think the phone in the pic is that bad. Maybe it's just because I have been dying to hear something so bad that anything looks amazing! I do hope the screen is a little bigger. I do like the slim design.

What if the real device shows up before then and I just email you a picture?

Or do you know something about the reveal date you're not telling ;) ?

That's exactly what I was thinking! Fess up PreCentral.net

Two things:
There is no gesture area on that mockup.
Please Palm/HP, leave off the hard keyboard. My favorite thing on my iPhone is the soft keyboard. My least favorite thing on my Pre is the hard keyboard.

IMO, got to have a physical keyboard!!!

However, I must say this. Just one of the phone ideas i had was to have physical keyboard like on the current Palm Pre, then when rotated to landscape mode. Perhaps have a soft keyboard???
Just throwing it out there.
Thoughts Opinions?

Definitely need some kind of keyboard option for landscape viewing. A real pain to have to rotate back to portrait just to type.

I'd actually like to see Palm release two versions of their next phone-- one with a physical keyboard (plus a VKB as needed) and one without. Maybe even three- portrait slider, landscape slider, and slab (soft keyboard). More choices are always better than fewer, and now that Palm has HP's resources behind them, it seems like they ought to be able to release more than one device at a time.

They MUST release multiple form factors! more forms = more purchases = WebOS in more hands = more apps = webos claiming their rightful spot as top OS...

Its a know fact that ALOT of people buy a phone purely based on looks and form factor, I know many walked away from the orig Pre because they felt the keyboard was too small...

dont limit the consumers choices!

4 form factos:
-slab
-portrait slider
-landscape slider
-candy bar style (pixi/BB)

+1. Maybe hardware design should be on hp?

I don't think Palm is going to leave off the physical keyboard. From the very beginning of Palm, they have always had one right? I doubt they'd ditch it now. If anything just add the virtual keyboard for those who want it so bad. And if not, theres always the VBK in Preware. I myself would hate the new phone if it didn't have a physical keyboard. But sadly, I'd probably still want it and I'd probably still get it.

Not from the very beginning. Remember Graffiti? I used to write letters in a special area with a stylus. But the first one with a physical keyboard was a big improvement IMHO over Graffiti!

Times are changing and technology keeps getting better. Having a capacitive touchscreen eliminates the need to have a physical keyboard and having programs like swype makes it even more so. Palm need to get with the program and make phones that most people will want to buy and not just the select few.(Palm veterans) Yes, there are those that love the small physical keyboard and that's what the Pre is for. Now Palm needs to release a touchscreen only phone and if they want to make two phones, a landscape slider phone. WebOS is all about being fluid and having a physical keyboard kind of takes away that fluidity of the OS. Well, hopefully we'll here something soon from Palm or HP about a new phone/tablet.

It would be nice if they had a version with and a version without a physical keyboard. Personally I want a keyboard, but I know there are plenty that don't. webOS has to be updated to work on devices without a physical keyboard(tablet)anyway...

I would argue that tablets by definition have keyboards, and it's slabs or slates (or maybe now "pads") that don't.

But point taken.

Please, please HP/Palm, please do not leave off the physical keyboard. I cannot and will not use a phone with just a on screen keyboard, otherwise I would have gone with an iPhone 3 years ago rather than stay with my Treo 680 until the Pre came out for AT&T. It was the best decision, with regards to phones that is, that I have ever made. I love my Pre. I can tolerate the little miss' iPhone but cannot stand the on screen keyboard.

Of course I do love all the apps that she can get that we don't have, e.g. I heart Radio, Citrix Receiver, Splash Shopper, but I digress (sp?)

Typing on the iPhone's not too bad IMO (though I am quicker and more accurate on my Pre), but it's the pop up delay that really frustrated me. I'd waste a lot of time waiting for the thing to pop up after I tapped in a text field.

here's the thing though: I was the biggest advocate for using hardware keyboards.

In using an evo and iPhone, i've found that all the next phone needs is GPU acceleration for the response time of the OS and tap response. The Pre seems to have some bad lag, and using the virtual keyboard has proven a worse experience than on other phones.

Maybe someone at Palm will enter a picture of the real Pre 2 to see if it will win!

HAHA that made me smile :D

That would be awesome and noone would know until it's released. And maybe they win their own Product :D

that phone looks TERRIBLE! I would never buy that. Not aesthetically pleasing in any way.

o it's not that bad. I'd consider it, but at the same time, hopefully webos is on multiple form factors

Everyone is missing something really important here... Palm is developing a webOS toaster!! This will be huge and you heard it on Precentral first. Tell your friends.

all they need is the samsung with landscape keyboard and you have the winner, I think...

My favorite mock up to date is David Vogt's C40! I would buy that in a hot second it if came out!

Hey, speaking of contests...what ever happened with the Palm Mascot contest you guys were running?!? You were supposed to take the top 5 suggestions, put it to a vote & winners would win cool Pre Central stuff!! I suggested a Phoenix, as after HP scooped up Palm, they would rise from the proverbial ashes! :-p Just curious!!! :-)

the new phone should be called the Palm Pheonix.. the slab version

Agreed! That would go right along with my mascot idea!!! ;-)

Also HPalm PLEASE DO NOT DO WHAT SAMSUNG DID...

dont make multi form facotrs for each diferent carrier, each carrier should haev the same choices with same name, none of this changing name cuz its a dif carrier..

Slab - Pheonix
slider portrait - pre 2
slider landscape - ________?

phoenix ?? what a joke of a name

"pre 2" is too t mobileish

I think the "phoenix" allusion is a bit cliche these days. Also, I would much prefer a name that doesnt immediately bring to mind the original, less-than-spectacular attempt.

Don't get me wrong; I love my Pre+ but let's be honest- whatever HPalm comes out with needs to be a whole new beast in terms of hardware.

I would also. Even though it's a 4" phone

I agree his c40 design is awesome for the next palm phone...with minor improvements in the quality of the materials I think that might be a winner

I am going to need some paper and pens...

its like the Pre got run over by a truck!

Honestly, I dont think Palm needs to make major changes to the outside. Maybe a little bigger like people say they want. But I love the look of the Pre. I love the roundness of it, the vertical sliding keyboard, I LOVE the matte finish of the touchstone charge back. I think most of their changes need to be on the inside. I agree with tjsongman, that mock up would be perfect. I saw it here:

http://palmnewsdaily.com/2010/04/14/rumor-a-few-more-details-about-the
-palm-c40/

Nice i 3rd the C40 mock up

i love that one! my vote for that too.

is more then one entry cool

Please take that ugly pre 2 mock up off, change it to the c40 picture quick! before one of these dumbass news outlets post a story thinking this is the new pre2 form.. o.O

the c40 mock up is sexy looking

Time for me to finish building my toaster.

As a lot of hoaxes do.

Nah

Bring on the Slab. Honestly i can't see the phone being a vertical slider. I just haven't seen man uber successful ones. Plus i want a slab.

I'm in. I have a drawing that may look good as a prototype. Now to build/ render it in 3D.

If I don't like my initial render after I submit it, can I re-render it? What if I make other changes to it? What if I make more than one? Can I submit more than one entry?

Wow, I guess I'm the only idiot that drooled over the above mockup. Wow indeed...

*crawls back into hole*

I liked it too :)

DUP

the only thing I don't like on the mock up picture in this article is that there is a lot of wasted space in the keyboard area - the keys themselves could be much larger - one of my current gripes with the existing Pre is the size of the keys

I hope the Pre 2 will not be a 4" phone. 3.7" should be the max.

These are not mine (obviously) and in fact don't show webOS (equally obviously) so I won't claim them as entries, I simply provide them to get the creative juices flowing

Edit, my links are getting eaten

They are all from this blog post http://tinyurl.com/2bkauss

its fake... H/Palm would not be making prototypes with Sprint logos on the back!

no one said it was real!

people like this who think this is suppose to be an actuall mock up, is the reason why u need to change the pic to the c40, for the sake of webos, change the main picture :p

sry double post

I actually really like the above mockup. The thinness and the square shape are great

"Slab", "candy bar style". Who came up with these stupid names?

Oh, and this just in: The WebOS toaster joke isn't funny anymore.

Those "stupid names" are industry standard terms used to discrib cellphones since they first started to change form factors into flip phones.

Candybar = Pixi, Treo 600
Slab = Evo, iPhone, etc
flip = Treo 180
Slider = Palm Pre

I know what they mean. I just think the names are dumb.

no! Plz nothing like that! There better be one without the damn keyboard.. Just touch plz.. It's about to be 2011 and qwerty keyboard it soo 06.. Need a better idea for the hardware.. The fones that sells are iphone and evo and they don't have damn keyboard!

And the Droid, which, oh yeah, has a physical QWERTY and sold better than the Evo.

ur trippin... My friend has that garbage he never opens the keyboard and that's y Droid x droppend fuckin keyboard. Get weith it cuh!

Good Grief! You might be able to shave with the Pre but that phone in the picture has corners sharp enough to use as a throwing star! A phone for webOS ninjas.

I think the mock phone in the article is a pretty good start. The only thing I might add , beside some slight design tweak, is the ability to rotate the screen 90' once it has been slid out. So you can choose either portrait or landscape while using the same keyboard.

I hope someone submits a real picture of the Pre 2 as a leak in response to this. Noone would know it's the real thing anyway

Is there a way we can submit pre designs to the community for critiquing or ideas or is that not allowed? Either way I would like to see comments from the community on my design in addition to being judged.

Seem this is the next low hardware for Sprint with 4G internal memory and 256 Ram...Anther cheap shot from Palm to Sprint....Look and compare this hardware and the software on the Palm Pre 2 for VZW,and you`ll see the big different.

you are stupid.

Not a fan of the sandwich-looking Kin style. The c40 is a great concept except that I imagine it would be hard to hold onto or at least look awkward with a 4"+ screen and the keyboard open.

Since we're gravitating into seamless-integration and synergy between devices like printers and tablets, one device that I would LOVE to have integrated with my phone would be a watch.

I doubt highly that it will ever come to fruition due to hardware restrictions, battery life, and a general lack of interest- but as someone who works in a pseudo-sterile environment, the ability to glance at a watch to check notifications of phone calls or messages would be invaluable.

A guy can dream, right?

Do you remember the image of Phil McKinney with propably new devices?
http://www.precentral.net/sites/precentral.net/files/articleimages/1852/...

That seems to fullfill your dream ;)

I very much hope that is the case! I would be one of the first in line to buy that puppy.

I submitted my mockup.

It compares the C40 in size to humans, the iPhone, the Pre, Shaq, an iPad, and a Giant Squid.

C40 screen size is 37 feet.

I hope you enjoy.

Everyone is trying to squeeze everything they want into one dream palm phone. Who says it has to be one phone I think they should come out with 4 models:
pre 2
pixi 2
What I like to call the "Palm Horizon" with a landscape keyboard.
And a candy bar phone with a monster screen.

That is what every other company is doing Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and Blackberry to name a few. The exception being Apple. I don't know why HP would not be able to do this, every time I go to Best Buy there are 5-10 different HP laptops. That is what people want, variety. I personally don't like the idea of the future of Palm resting in one device.

I am also reading a lot of palm wont do this or that, what we have to realize is that its HP now not Palm. Yeah they are keeping the palm name but HP is writing the checks. HP knows how to make money and if they see the demand for a candy bar phone I believe they will make it. I don't see why they wouldn't they are making a tablet and that's just a large version of a candy bar phone.

This is my favorite concept of the C40 originating here on PreCentral. http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh354/Awsome525/palm-c40-mock-up.jpg

This site has some great mock ups too.
http://palmnewsdaily.com/2010/02/26/new-webos-device-coming-c40-maybe/

it does resemble most of the past phones from HP. Silly, Huge and unusable...

What a silly contest.

If HP wants to stand the slightest chance to grow WebOS to a platform, they will need to please us all ;-)

So, we will see HP WebOS smartphones in all relevant form factors: Pixi, Pre and a landscape slider (HD) all with physical keyboards plus a HD slate lacking one. Then add a pad and a netbook, printers and whatever. Anything less than that will lead to failure. But attacking the market with a full portfolio like that can still become a fatal failure for HP. We will see...

So, this contest is nonsense...

BTW, IMHO your rendering sucks...

the size of the pre is perfect it just needs much more screen area if they make it bigger its ok just dont go over board SCUARED PHONES SUCK! WHO THE HECK STARTED WITH THAT TREND! THEY NEED TO SOP!!!

I agree- squared phones look kind of odd and feel unnatural in the hand. If they maintained the shape and size of the current pre, however, that wouldnt allow for much wiggle room with the screen size. Any significant increase in screen size would probably require a new design.

Really want a landscape slider, but slab or candybar would be good too.

[insert photo of Pre or Pre+ here]

Do I win?

ah man!. . you beat me to it! hahahaha

& u beat me to the 'u beat me to it' post!

& u beat me to the '& u beat me to the "u beat me to it" post!'

if the new phone is all touch screen and no keyboard... how do u copy/past? or bring up menus? right now i kinda need meta-tap + c (copy) or meta-tap + v (paste). or orange + meta-tap (bring up options)

if the phone would be all touch and no buttons whatsoever... a lot of things would be kinda impossible dont yall think?
