Credit where due: Derek Kessler called it last November 21

The time: November 19th, 2009. The place: PreCentral.net Round Table. The mood: a little dark, but we hadn't yet known that Palm would be up on the auction block. The topic: the ideal candidate to purchase Palm. Our own Derek Kessler called it:

I think that the best company to buy Palm would be one that has not yet broken into the smartphone business. Companies like Apple or RIM already have a preconceived notion of how smartphones should work and obviously webOS doesn’t fit that mold. So who? HP. “But HP already makes smartphones!” you say. Yes, they do. But those are Windows Mobile smartphones and they’ve been selling in smaller and smaller quantities every year. For a while it looked like HP might actually be getting out of the smartphone game all together before they debuted the underwhelming iPAQ 910 last summer. Outside of the handheld space HP has shown a knack for innovation and has handily eclipsed rival Dell as the top PC seller in the land. Adding Palm, and specifically webOS, to HP’s portfolio would give them an instant foothold in the smartphone market (as their purchase of former Palm parent company 3Com is doing for networking equipment) and would give Palm access to billions of dollars for R&D that could lead to much more impressive handsets. While I doubt that Palm is actively courting potential suitors, anybody that buys Palm is going to need deep pockets and a hands-off approach, and I believe that HP fits that profile to a tee.

Credit where it's due, Derek. Nice job.

Oh Dieter. You so smart.

You can give me credit too. I commented on one of the speculation articles on PreCentral that this would be the best matchup! :)

Right on the money!

I always thought along the same lines. For example, when people were screaming HTC should purchase Palm, I thought, that's going to make 4 OSes for them. Android, WinMo, Brew and now WebOS. Nothing against HTC but with the success they have with WinMo and Android, I doubt they would have given WebOS the chance it needed.

I think HP is a perfect fit. Heck they are just down the street from them.

Now what happens with the Palm brand itself? HP Pre just sounds wrong.

Nice foresight

spooky prognostication. nice call derek

me too last year, recently I thought lenovo, but hp makes me happy. I loved my ipaq, even it did run windows lol

Does he get a "finders fee" from HP?

I'm waiting for my check.

I think you'll see the c40 before you see the check.

Im sure Palm thought your idea was spot on....they started looking in Feb 2010... nice call! If anything, Palm should throw you a Bone!

Great job, Derek!
This is why I love Precentral. :) You all know your stuff.

Exactly!!! I hate to admit but i used to be an 'apple' you know what.. ModMyI.com was my site of choice but after spending time on precentral, i feel like the genius gap is major.

I want a BoomCast right now.

I want a BoomCast right now.

I called it too. HTC would have been nice, but HP needed a quick way back into the mobile space.

Hopefully Palm can keep it's brand name, like Compaq did in that acquisition ages ago.

ipaq 910 was my last smartphone, it debuted in 2008, not last summer, and it underwhelmed with a real keyboard, real doc editing, real voice command and a real pc sync. I'm glad I switched to the pre, but it still has a long way to go. Lets hope hp makes it a lot better.

When this was first posted in November 2009, "last summer" was 2008.

Good Job D.

Yep, Good Job Derek!

Your prognostications certainly exceeded mine. In November, I was still adamant that if any it would be MS, and HP was nowhere on my map. Seemed to me then that they were moving out of phones and into backend infrastructure types of things. There were doing that, but obviously now, they are wanting to regain their presence in mobile. I think this is a good fit now that it's happened.
