Crosswords Hits webOS 24

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 16 Dec 2009 10:08 pm EST

Nearly every day now Derek has been posting up lists of new and updated apps and if you haven't yet, take this opportunity to thank him for what's quickly become a massive task. I won't lie, the number of apps that are hitting every day is getting bigger and at some point we may have to retire the feature if only to save Mr. Kessler's typing fingers.

In the meantime, I'm going to be selfish and point out one app that just hit. Longtime listeners of the PalmCast know I've been waiting for this: Crosswords. @audemars02 sent in the good word. Crosswords comes from Stand Alone Software - they made the best PalmOS Crosswords app back in the day and also make what I think is probably the best Crosswords app on the iPhone. Now they're on webOS and I'm not lying when I say that I got a little misty over it.

The app comes in a free 'lite' version with 30 built-in puzzles and a $9.99 version that lets you download puzzles from a couple dozen different sources, many updated daily. At first blush it looks fairly full featured with some decent keyboard navigation shortcuts, but unfortunately no pinch-to-zoom (you use the comma key instead).

$9.99 might seem a little steep, but it's actually the same price as the iPhone version. It's also nice that there's a lite version so you can check out the interface first (be sure to hit up the help / quick tips to learn how the navigation works). Me: I just laid my money down.

If you're reading this on a Pre or Pixi, you can click here to jump into the App Catalog to check it out. Oh, and as of this writing, the App Catalog just broke the 800 app mark (for US Palm Pre owners, anyway).

I have been waiting for this!

I'm personally more excited by "Black Box" which I used to play a shareware version of back in Windows 95 (and I know it dates back to earlier).

And a Wordpress app, that looks to be one of those apps that adds to the functionality for many. I know some were complaining that no apps have any functional improvement.

I'll check it out... if its up to par I may even purchase.

Off-topic: No theme for you Dieter, just a few patches, eh?

Ouch, though... $10 (whether WebOS or iPhone) is a bit steep for crosswords.

Finally, what looks like a quality app! And I have been waiting (im)patiently for a crossword game. It is a good thing they put out a lite version, also, since $10 is a hefty price. Might end up being my second paid app purchase.

You know, there is not a single word about this program or WebOS on their website... at all! The only mention of Palm is the old PalmOS.

It's on their website now: http://standalone.com/webos/crosswords/

No discount for Palm OS customers. :( Not a problem though. For the amount of time I spend using this app, $10 is a steal.

Downloadable puzzles makes the $10 less of an issue

this was sorely needed.

i also can't wait for a full on casino app (astraware had one for palm OS that i really liked) with popular games like craps, roulette, slots (and other non-poker games -- where there's no need for smart AI.)

Deiter is there any good word twist games?

Word Whirl = Text Twist clone.

Word Whirl Lite - Free - 10 levels that repeat. See if you like the game play.

Word Whirl - $2.99 - 2,300 levels.

Email support@sachersoft.com if you have any questions.

I was just listening to PalmCast 67/68 and even then Dieter was asking for Crossword Puzzle app - your time is here!

surely $10 isn't that much if it provides you hours andhours of entertainment? Ppl happily pay more for a dvd and watch it just once!

Sweet Holy Jeebus, my Crossword drought is over. I owned the Treo version from Standalone, and it's absolutely the best. I wonder if I can get a discount since I'm a prior customer?

Yeah, $9.99 might seem a little steep, but remember that the Palm OS version on my Treo was $19.99, and %200 worth the price.

Thanks for at least take note of us poor GSM users with our massive 100 apps !

$10 for an app?!?! I love crosswords, but I don't think so. Guess I'll just be enjoying the free lite version.

Wow... when did people get so cheap?

$10 is a good price for this app... especially since you can download crosswords.

Sheesh!

Like most things in life, the value of any object, program, service, will vary from one person to another. Some people will think $10 is just perfect. Others will think it is too high, and others too low. I think it is a bit too high, but yet worth more than most other apps. Sounds like you think it is a steal :)

The free market might decide to put pressure to change the price (higher or lower), only time will tell.

Crosswords was one of the main reasons I bought Classic. Looks like I won't need that anymore.

Funny though - I've been trading email with Stand Alone for over a week trying to get the Palm OS version of Crosswords to properly see puz files loaded via USB to the Virtual SD card (ultimately, I was told there was nothing they could do). They never once mentioned this was coming and it was not posted in their message forum's dedicated thread. Had it been, I would have just waited patiently and not bothered them!

Great app. Playing through the trial version. When I finish those puzzles, I'll drop $10 in a second. Great design. Space and Period to navigate around. Never really need to tap.

I think it is a bit too high, but yet worth more than most other apps. Sounds like you think it is a steal.

Whoa mama, $10 is a bit steep, but this is a really cool application. I need to check this out, cause there is nothing better than having some crosswords on the plane.

OMG, $9.99 for a crossword puzzle game? Why not just play the crossword from the local paper. Its free if you got to a cafe or Borders or something. (fragrances)

Yeh I don't think I'd be buying this app anytime soon. I'm more of an iPhone app buying person.
