Delete Multiple Emails [webOS 3.0] 12

by Adam Marks Wed, 27 Jul 2011 3:14 pm EDT

This tip is only for devices running webOS 3.0 and higher

One big complaint in the email app of webOS 1.0 and 2.0 devices was the inability to delete multiple emails at once. While swiping to delete emails one after another is still a relatively easy task, especially with the auto-confirmation of the deletions, it still was not the most efficient process either. With the release of webOS 3.0's email app, you can now cross that complaint off your list because that functionality is now available!

On the email app's middle navigation pane (the message listing pane), you will find a little folder icon ( ) on the bottom-right that you can tap to enter a "selection mode" to select multiple emails. The top and bottom of that pane will turn blue and the pane's header will change to "Select items..." with a Cancel button. From here, tap on each email you want to delete (sadly, no "select all" option is available). Those emails will be highlighted and a running count of selected emails is maintained at the top of the screen. Once you are done selecting emails, just tap on the trash icon ( ) on the bottom of the pane and confirm the deletions in the preceding pop-up.

Wow, I honestly didn't know about this, thanks for the tip! Now, if only we had threaded email conversations and the ability to not have items marked as read after deleting the previous email.

With regards to not having itmes marked as read... the top right corner of the e-mail header includes a button [Mark as Read] if the e-mail is unread or [Mark as Unread] if the e-mail displays as read. When the e-mail client is open to all three panes, it is easy to overcome your "marked as read" issue (the middle pane being the list of e-mails and the right pane being the e-mail message itself).

Guessing this works to move to folder as well?

yup...but that is for a future tip! :-)

True but on 1.4.5, you can choose the options for how the deleted item is shown. For example, if you delete the item and it goes back to the inbox, it doesn't mark the next item as read. I want it to be like how Outlook does it where you have the option to have it only marked as read when you tell it to mark it as read, otherwise it keeps it unread at all times so when you previewing or view an email, it won't be considered read.

I did actually figure this one out the other day and it's helping me to clean out the mailbox.

When I'm doing is first doing a search for a given sender that I might get lots of e-mail from. For instance, my local tv station sends out 2 or 3 weather e-mails per day. They add up really quickly over the week.

So I search for that sender. Then I enter the selection mode and choose all of them (yeah -- one at a time) and then delete the whole batch.

It could still be better but at least it isn't one by one.

And what I truly miss and sure hope they are going to add soon is the ability to sort by sender or subject. Shoot -- my Palm Pre Plus can do that! Why can't the TouchPad?

Developer 1: How can we convey the selection of multiple items?

Developer 2: A folder , duh.

Hmm, so does the folder button beside the trashcan in that screen shot let you move the multiply selected items to a folder? Because that would be the next thing I'd want... (If I already owned a TouchPad, lol)

did not know about this one either ...niiiice.

Great tip - thnx!

Ha, didn't know this until now- thanks guys.

Just solved one of my major annoyances. Now if I can just make the leap to start messing with the "homebrew" apps. Only had the thing for 4 days. :)
