Deutsche Bank, Kaufman Brothers: Palm's Outlook is Looking Good 54

by Robert Werlinger Sat, 13 Feb 2010 9:50 am EST

The guidance given in Palm’s last two investor calls have pointed to revenues as high as $1.8 billion by the end of the second half of its current fiscal year. In order to obtain that kind of revenue, the sell through of their devices needs to increase substantially, and a survey conducted by Deutsche Bank and research from Kaufman Brothers suggest that Palm is doing just that.

Deutsche Bank, maintaining a its BUY rating on Palm with a target price of $20, conducted a phone survey of 210 Verizon outlets in 38 states suggesting that while Verizon has yet to fully engage in promotion of Palm’s product (I can attest to this with personal experience), Palm is closing in on Blackberry for most preferred at %17.

Kaufman Brother’s Shaw Wu anticipates that Palm will ship 1 million webOS units this quarter, with Verizon adding another 550,000 to 600,000 shipments alone. Wu’s research also indicates that those buying the Pre Plus or Pixi Plus are picking those devices over Verizon’s current Android offerings, and the handsets of more established players like RIM and Microsoft.

As Palm’s CEO Jon Rubinstein pointed out in his interview with Kara Swisher at CES this year, new carrier rollouts build on top of previous ones. Palm is now looking at a potential subscriber base of over 100 million domestically (which will increase substantially with the addition of AT&T sometime this year), and as the company builds and maintains its momentum, that $1.8 billion in projected revenues by the end of its fiscal year is beginning to look less absurd after all.

...is that all you can say? It might be fun being the first to do anything, but most (if not all) users on here would like to see some 'food for thought' on the article(s) before us. Did you even read the article or did you just want to post that to SEEM cool? Weren't you the same kid that posted, ATTENTION ADOBE FLASH IN APP CATELOG 02/10/10 a couple days ago that pretty much annoyed everyone on here? I'm thinking it was you because of the Honda name...but if not then my bad ha.

Yes, that is all I can say. What are you going to do about it? Thought so, kiddo. Go back to watching your Saturday morning cartoons.

I'm not going to do anything about it...there's no need to. I wasn't trying to be mean or stupid about it...I'm just saying the facts BUT you feel free to do whatever you please Mr. HondaCop.

I don't watch cartoons and I'm not a 'kiddo' but I will go finish up my Life Span Psychology homework so I can graduate...college =)

I watch saturday morning cartoons! Though they are getting worse each year...and I am a college graduate!!!

Now I remember a time when Saturday morning cartoons had
Gummy bears
Voltron
GIJoe
TMNT
Thundercats

and they were on like EVERY channel....kids ruled between 6-11 in the morning on a saturday...

Now a days....bah!

Ok, going back to watching cartoon network...

& as for this post, I do wish palm the best. With the pre's few short comings(as with any os) I do see them being in the top % of the smartphone market place.

don't forget we also had xmen and spiderman cartoons!!

both of you are little girls fighting in a fucking blog get a life losers.

No doubt! I was pissed... I'll admit, I grabbed my phone and hit the App button as soon as I read that line only to read the next post in sheer disappointment.... Hey this def confirms our anticipation... So thanks to you HondaCop for keeping us in check! Make it happen Palm!!

@Neemiah_Papalii:Are you jealous because you didn't post first? Looks like you're second to post, damn, better luck next time!lol' Your 'food for thought'is by poking at him.
Btw,he did not annoyed me but you? not cool!

...not jealous one bit. Ok, pick on the one that actually speaks up about the 1ST POST bs w/o writing anything constructive relating to the article.

You sure have been writing a lot of constructive posts lately, huh? BUHAHAHAH Stop crying, kiddo.

The Winter Olympic Special Olympics gives it's first gold medal for online achievement to Hondacop. Somebody hold it for him, his mittens are double pinned to his sweater. Your always a winner Honda cop! (Shags HC's gooey hair then wipes clean on pants keg)

@ PreDogs:You heard that,Hondacop? take a bow.

and yet somehow last to get a life...

Finally, some good news for Palm. Yes!

Tell me about it. I'm sick of reading all the negative things circulating about Palm (corporate) and webOS (platform). I can't wait til Palm shuts everyone up when they rise back to the top spot =)

Heck yeah that is what I'm talking about =) As people start getting webOS devices in their "palm"s (lol) they'll realize that it is far superior than any Android/iPhone/WinMo phone out there when it comes to free flowing experience. If Palm keeps selling @ the rate they're selling...then tax on AT&T and later maybe even tMobile, it can very well reach and surpass that $1.8 billion mark. I'm not gonna lie...I wasn't happy seeing the Sprint exclusive-ness break but now I understand that in order for webOS to flourish it needs to find various outlets to do so. Keep it up Palm =)

I walked in a Verizon store to give the Pre + a whirl and without me asking the sales rep said the Pre and Pixi were both selling well for them... He also said the Pixi was much smoother than the Pre... Being an original Pre user I felt quite the contrary! :) Anyway I look at this whole "Palm outlook" from 2 sides... As a small scale investor I could care less what carrier gets what, as long as it sells... As a fanatic I just want them to make an announcement next week about a new device!!! PLEASE!!!!

And you thought the rep would say the contrary? Of course he's going to say they have been selling well. He wants to sell you one, kid.

Well the part I left out was how he kept referring to the Droid and how it "does" more... He actually short sold the Pre... I asked him about the multitasking on the Droid (I never knew how it worked). He proceeded to go through 3 diff menus to get to an open app menu... A bit lengthy to say the least... He also claimed the Droid could handle 30 open apps at once to the Pre's 7... I said huh??? You can fill in the blanks from there...

You should have taken the sales person's name and talked to his manager. Apparently he did not know what he was talking about; that reflects badly on Verizon. This guy needs to either get training or stop lying.

It is great to see some one that thinks Palm is doing good, but I think they are a little to optimistic if they think palm is on its way to "potential subscriber base of over 100 million domestically". I would think they are doing really good if they hit 30 million. What are they at now? 2 Million.

nono... you got things wrong.. its about the POTENTIAL subscribers... not the actual installed palm user base.

But 100 million is one out of every 3 persons in the US. I just don't think that Palm has that potential. I would love if it did. Just imagine the apps then.

please add subscribers of at&t, verizon and sprint (and probably even tmobile) and thats just the US. if you go international you can "easily" get 100million POTENTIAL subscribers. at least when you dont stick exclusivly with only one carrier.

I agree that if you add in international sales they have a potential of 100 million, but that is not what the article says. I just pointed it out because you have to look at everything with subjectivity or it you would believe everything that was written. I think having over 1/3 of the domestic market is a little to optimistic.

That's objectivity, not subjectivity. Hate to be the grammar/word police but that's actually a really important distinction.

and I'd add, objectivity is pretty impossible to obtain in reporting.

Thanks for the grammar lesson. :-)

That still doesn't cover up the fact that the author of this article is overly optimistic. By the way, I really do want WebOS to take off.

Any other grammar issues?

The author never said that it was even likely that is the case. "Potential subscriber base" is simply the cumulative total number of DOMESTIC subscribers with access to Palm devices: ~50 million Sprint customers and ~80 million subscribers >100 million POTENTIAL customers. Get it?

precentral should consider banning some ip addresses.

(Or as someone else recommended)... like engadget (downgrade to oblivion)...

IF there were an unlocked GSM PRE+ ... I would have had one a LONG time ago...

Maybe we could ban "hondacop what a tool this jackass is..yes thought so tough guy...LOL .

@mmcnamara43:wow! another Bruce Lee's mentality.A pot calling a kettle black.Maybe,he's tough and have you thought about it?lol'

I am a Pre owner who has purchased Palm phones for the last 8 years. I want to really like my phone, however it is so slooow at doing just the basic stuff. Looking up a contact, or an email address, or adding a contact as a cc. Even dialing the phone sometimes is painful, so is looking at missed calls. For the basic stuff my previous Palm Centro ran circles around it.

Palm will loose droves of current 2yr subscribers in 2011 unless they do something about improving basic functionalities. Look, a lot of consumers buy phones without really trying them in real world use. Sure they come with a 30 day guarantee, however if any are like me, that says, it must be me not knowing how to use the phone or they will fix it soon. A couple of months later, it is too late.

So, am I the exception or the rule?

I do not necessarily think you are an exception. I personally love my pixi but it is objectively not nearly as smooth of an experience as an iPhone. The iPhone feels like silk where as interactions with webOS feels a bit more like vinyl--still smooth but sticks in places. I think webOS is so much more elegant when compared to Android that Palm still compares well in the lower end space.

I do fear that if Palm does not continue to make measurable progress with the interactive performance of their phones there is an upper limit to how many phones they can sell.

It's a nice toy, but for professional Pre users, the Palm line goes on trial in June when Sprint first release buyers can opt into something with real capabilities and apps. Treo Pro and 755p are still out there. I'll sacrafice some of the iPhone fluff to get back some of the hardcore function.

I have a Palm Pre phone and it performs quite fast. The response of the phone making calls and answering calls are instant. If you are connecting to the web, the speed is typically dependent on the site you are accessing and the network traffic at the time; these are issues that are independent of the phone. Even iPhone users experience these types of issues. Apple tries to make the iPhone more responsive by limiting the number of applications you can run on it to only one. On the Palm Pre you can easily run ten applications at the same time (multitasking) quite fast.

We are expecting webOS 1.4 to be released by Monday (February 15, 2010). Palm has stated that this new operating system release will cause the phone to perform even faster. So in about two days, your phone's performance should be enhanced.

Go Palm Go!
Now please do some good advertisement and sell webos phones in more countries!!!

Good news! WebOS > iPhone OS, Android, WinMo

johnflo88 pull Hondacop's weiner out of your butt and quit posting to everyone who says something to him. Also learn some grammar and quit saying "lol" after everything like the little pansy girl you are.

@blakebloch:your grammar is just excellence, lol'Why don't you let me put mine BIG one into to your SMALL butt and you might enjoy it(i'm sure you will),since you know so much about butt. After that you can also blow on it.lol' lol'how about that?I am in love with you so much.Looks like you're my type.
Btw,I am sure you're good at giving very good blow-job too and i am itching for one right now especially from you,ass-hole!

We need some moderators in here.

I agree 100%

Even a plain old simple kill file would be nice.

"Wu

I was thinking the EXACT same thing...LMAO!

It's so funny that we're talking about valuable research, since I'm working on my english research paper as we speak, I find it quite valuable to know what is considered actual reseach. Thanks guys.

It's too bad mindshare, market share, web share and real world sightings don't seem yo back up Wu's in depth investigation.

Does Verizon have a kiosk in Palm HQ?

Analysts make me happy when they support Palm.

But they are about as useful as a backstreet fortune-teller, no matter what the outlook is.

Well...there might be a difference between someone who sees the sticky note ad and goes in specifically to buy the Pre without investigating other smartphones, and someone who looks at everything is available and then makes a decision.

johnflo you sound Asian so you saying you have a big one is ironic. Now go back to your Rosetta Stone American English edition and keep practicing there kiddo. Also your graphic detail of what your dad makes you do to him has no place here.
