Document editing, international paid app mayhem, and more... From the Forums 32

by Robert Werlinger Thu, 01 Apr 2010 3:51 pm EDT

Here's some of the latest discussion in the forums:

  • The PreCentral forums are a great place for debate, but there's one thing almost universally agreed upon by webOS users everywhere: the need for Docs To Go.  Forum members are getting fed up with the lack of this essential productivity suite, and have crafted an open letter to DataViz, the company behind the product.  Go ahead, give 'em your two cents.
  • Paid apps are available everywhere the Pre is sold!  Now it's time for you  developers out there to get your applications properly translated for the various regions you plan to sell your wares in.  A daunting task to be sure, but there's good news:  number of forum members are offering their assistance to that end.
  •  We had waited (and waited!) for video recording to hit webOS.  Now that we've had it for a little while now, member storino03 asks an interesting question: just how often do you actually use it?  I use mine at least a few times per week.

We look forward to seeing you in the forums!  Not a member? Remember: registration is free, and the benefits are plentiful indeed.

Mobile Hotspot forums are worth a mention also ;)

For Sprint that is...

" international piaid app "

:)

First "piaid" app I bought: Spell Checker :-)))

Does Telcel have paid apps? I thought TelCel and Verizon customers were still waiting for 1.4.1(.1).

My first purchase? Nothing because it won't accept my HBOS Visa Debit! Argh :S

You must have credit or funds available.

who won between pre and hd2

The Pre won @ 51% if I remember rightly.

tomorrow it's gonna b between the pre+ and the droid.

Just had one of those Luna restarts. Thought Palm had this fixed with 1.4.1.1 - guess not. Does seem to be less frequent. Nothing worse than trying to show off the Pre and "uh wait a minute, it's rebooting".

I've been getting them a lot recently too. Worst one is the fact that the the damn thing reboots when I try to launch the terminal app. Only just got my phone back from repair so was gutted when I found that one out :\

the terminal app is borked in 1.4.x use terminus app

Actually, there is now an update to the Terminal Service. Update it, and Terminal works again! Yay.

It only happens to me when turning screen back on.

I hope we do get docs to go soon. Loved it on my palm tx!

Wouldn't Docs to Go work with the Classic app?

From the DataViz web site:

As Palm's document solution of choice for over 10 years, DataViz is happy to tell you that we currently plan to release Documents To Go for webOS in early 2010, allowing you to edit and create Microsoft

...yet in the forums (assuming it was really from DataViz) they clearly stated that they have halted the Docs2Go app for webOS citing that the user base of the Pre & Pixi variants aren't substantial enough to make a profit.

This coming from a developer who could have every webOS owner buy the app for whatever price they want upwards to even $20. Is that not profit enough?

From everyones complaints these are the most WANTED apps in order:

+ Flash 10.1 Beta
+ Docs 2 Go
+ MyTether

...with just these 3 apps alone, Palm (and each respected developer) could turn satisfactory rate of webOS waaay up PLUS bring in more potential customers - both normal and business ones alike =)

yeah, the guy who posted that in the forum has nothing to do with DataViz, and was just joking. Keep reading...=)

couldn't agree more with neemiah. Palm was synonomous with docs toGo. What happened? Palm should really be going to bat here. I don't understand.

tkbach:

I have an inkling that if this developer does not produce Docs2Go for webOS then someone - maybe even Palm will...especially seeing how it's a much coveted app among business, college, and pretty much every other niche out there.

...maybe someones already working on it ;)

comment here if you think Palm should release beta webOS updates to shut whiny consumers up. beta updates wouldve, ofcourse, be optional to download if possible..

This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard all week.

i heard somebody yap on about it in the forums, so i posted that to see how many people'd pay interest

I think some of the updates have been Betas from what I've seen. Still, any updates are better than nothing at all. Would like to see more functions (mic, doc editing, etc...), but webOS is still the best game in town.

I just posted this this the forums...

Wow. Thanks to Robert for putting this up on the blog. A lot of good responses. I appreciate everyone's input.

Of course, DataViz has not responded, and I doubt they will, but at least we have a forum where we can try to get their attention.

We all have different reasons for buying a WebOS phone, and we all have different reasons for wanting or needing an office suite for their phone. All of our reasons are valid. So, with that I hope that we can keep the focus on "bring us an office suite" and not arguing about why.

I encourage everyone with an interest to do so to follow some of the links that have been posted and post comments and qiestions to all of the different companies.

Our motivations may be different, but our goal is the same.

Would it be a bad idea to release something like "webOS lite", a webOS version for featurephones?

The version could be different in using the same UI but only using a meta area instead of buttons to navigate through the apps.

Not only could this massively increase the user base, it would also be licenseable to other vendors like samsung & Co.

webOS lite would be compatible to webOS so...
- developpers could produce for a whole bunch of feature phones and the pre
- market analysts would see that palm's success is ensured by not only the pre... and that all without releasing a new piece of hardware ;).

Documents To Go? Yawn. :) I seem to recall that the real innovation for a decade has always come from Quickoffice...
First with handheld spreadsheet, first with full Office file Editing, first full handheld suite, first on Symbian, first on iPhone, etc.

um.. Are the collective memories here so very very short as to expect nothing from those folks in Dallas, or have they said they will ignore webOS, Dieter?? Or are we all DoxToGo fan boys eager to pay whatever price is demanded?

;)

(not with QO since 2002)

I most likely won't buy anything since i don't want to use my Creditcard, now if i could charge to my phone number and get it on my bill i would but other than that nope, plus i want Xplane but i cant get it in Canada

Great comments from everyone,

Personally I wouldn't mind changing from Documents to Go to Quickoffice, it would just be a matter of which one comes out first,

Meanwhile I'm still waiting for the 1.4.1(.1). version of WebOS to get to us Telcel (Mexico) users, because NOT ALL Pre users have got access to that update and thus to improvements like the access to paid apps...

I talked My Mother into getting the Sprint Pre on Day 1.
She upgraded from a Treo.

She returned it w/in her 30 day window for a Palm Pro because the Pre didn't have document editing.

I asked her the other day how many times she's edited a document on her Pro.

Zero.

While I'm sure that there are plenty of people who will use such an app daily, there are other people who just want the option.

It's said that when choosing which hotel to stay at, most people will choose the one with a pool. Maybe even pay a bit more.
but when they get there, they don't touch the pool.

if Pam wants people to choose their hotel, they need a pool.
