Donate to get more patches on webOS 2.0 [Video] 52
As we mentioned in an update to our post yesterday, we have our first patches for webOS 2.0 available in Preware (including node.js javascript services). Sconix, Oil, and others have already got their patches up and running and in the above video you can see them installed. One nice thing with webOS 2.0: no need to reboot after enabling or disabling Developer Mode.
Preware and many of the most popular patches are developed and maintained by WebOS Internals. In order to get these patches and software working on webOS 2.0, more of the team is going to need to purchase the Unlocked Palm Pre 2 to develop on. To that end the PreCentral community has organized another telethon to support homebrew developers. The current target is $6,000 to purchase phones for the developers that need them. As of last Friday, based just off donations from people in our forums, they've already hit $4,200. That's pretty incredible when you think about it, but it's not quite at the goal yet.
So a small push is all that's needed to jump start the homebrew movement for webOS 2.0 and the Palm Pre 2. Anybody who donates more than $30 before December 1st will get to have their title in our forums changed to "Top Homebrew Supporter."

Don't most people develop/test patches in the virtual machine?
relying totally on an emulator for development and/or testing sounds like a horrible idea.
Yes but that doesn't fully test real-time hardware integration and integration is key!!! :)
All patches can be created and tested successfully on the emulator without the need for a Device. Certain Program/Kernels on the other hand have to be tested on a device. I think this article should fix how it makes people believe that a Pre 2 is needed to develop patches for WebOS 2.0.
Definitely going to need a patch to remove that "Just Type" field from the default screen and to remove the quick launch bar at the bottom. Much rather have a clean screen (as my original Pre is now).
If I wanted all that clutter on the screen, I'd get an Android device.

yep. is it really needed if it's "just type?" 4 x 4 icons too.
+1
I agree with others - the 4 X 4 launcher and remove "Just Type" & "Quick Launch" bars are essential patches.
I believe the launcher is becoming mostly unpatchable. At least that's what Sconix says in the ACAL thread... :(
If someone tells me how to install Preware onto my developer Pre2, I'll donate $10. I would like really easy to follow instructions. I'm using XP on my PC.
*IF* someone tells you how? Rod has been telling you how on twitter. This sir, is the wrong mindset and an utter fail.
Easy dude. I am going to donate anyway. I am a noob using the Palm Install on command prompt. It's a little joke.
Simma.
Donated $10. Happy? I mean, especially after you bullied me into it. Lol
By coincidence, I also tell you how below :) Short summary, install SDK, run the 2.0 doctor (don't need your device plugged in, just to get the updated novacom drivers), then download the preware ipk and palm-install it.
Thanks man. I'm a noob with the SDK and how to do a Palm Install, but I will force myself to learn
Re: Dieter, you don't need to do quite so many steps to get Preware working on 2.0. You do need the SDK as well as the 2.0 doctor to get the new novacom drivers for Windows or OSX, (so it recognizes pre2 device ID's) -- but then you can just
Download
http://ipkg.preware.org/feeds/webos-internals/
armv7/org.webosinternals.preware_1.4.2_arm.ipk
then run:
palm-install org.webosinternals.preware_1.4.2_arm.ipk
--destinal
Even simpler, download http://get.preware.org/org.webosinternals.preware.ipk (for the device) - that's the URL that the MetaDoctor automatic Preware installation uses, and will never change.

Donated. Come on all. A couple bucks goes a long way if it comes from everyone.
How does precentral know if I donate $30 or more to change my title?
Just made my donation. I think Rod will put the usernames or emailaddresses through...
AR
Donated. I greatly admire and appreciate the work WebOSInternals does to create a unique experience for the WebOS community.
I donated last week and urge all others who have benefitted by homebrew to do the same. Love those guys!
I have donated multiple times in the past. The last was a $50 donation to enable Oil (Brandon) to fly-in for the NYC Dev Conference.
I am fortunate enough to be able to make these donations and am happy to do so. Give whatever you can afford to give. It really helps these guys out, which in turn helps us all out.
Added my $30 to the effort. {Jonathan Ezor}
Donated another $15.
Here is an idea how to push for donors. Make it a raffle for those who donate $30 or more enter to win a unlocked palm pre 2 or some sort of palm/webos related prize. I am sure that there might incite many donations.
Just donated $35. Sorry I waited so long! They deserve it, and I'm sure they'll beat their $6K target.
just sent in my $30. Thanks for all the great work.
Just sent in my $40 donation. These devs are great...took a leave of absence to mess with a Droid but...totally gonna buy an unlocked Palm Pre 2. You just can't beat the WebOS community and developers. Hope the donation helped
Donated $30 a couple hours ago. Great work, Internals!
just donated $30 for the amazing crew at Internals....keep up the good work, I hope bell canada does not forget about us up here in canada when 2.0 drops. plus new devices will be great next year. It's because of all the hard work that makes me love my Palm pre minus so much....and a hug to Jason.
Just donated $30 as well. keep up the great work guys...
Just donated $25. Keep up the great work.
Dieter,
How come you use the long code (updownupdown, etc) to get into dev mode instead of simply using webos20090606 (the date that the first webOS phone launched)? I find it easier to remember AND easier to enter.
It still does work in webOS v2.0, right??
Kmox
It does.

Dieter's not alone. Even the Palm speaker at DevDays who was showing how to enable devmode was using the long one. He couldn't remember the konami code quite right, even, until someone in the audience called out the webos20090606 code.. :)
Thanks, Rod. Good to hear. I have a mental block with the one that Dieter used. No matter how hard I try, I cannot remember it. webos20090606 is, for some reason is easy for me (maybe because of how many months I was counting down the days to that date) !
Wow.... I misspelled my own last name!!! lmao
When I originally started this (sadly it had to get passed off due to everything going on in my life but no big deal the community is great for watching each others back) I was going to donate what I could on thanksgiving day which I might not be able to do so chances are I will likely donate the day before or the day after. I would still like to aim for the day of so I will see if I can use my cell phone connected to my netbook where I am going.
So with this said, it would be cool for a lot of people to donate on thanksgiving day as that was the name of the webathon back a couple months ago. The WebOS internals thanks giving telethon, because what better way to show your thanks for the group of people we all love then allow them to have the money to do what they do best. But either way if you can afford to donate whenever, great. If not because of hard times I think most of us are understanding enough. With that being said... I hope everyone has a great thanksgiving and a happy holidays depending on what you celebrate and a good new year.
Don't forget to post your donation amount in the forum thread at http://bit.ly/96o0HP to make sure you're included on the donor list (which Cantaffordit is managing as a trusted independent third-party).
I also want to note that a large majority of the patches are contributed by homebrew developers who are not associated with WebOS Internals, and I encourage people to support them directly too. Note that one of those developers, Jason Robitaille, is included in the list of people who will get a Pre 2 developer device from the proceeds of the telethon.

I did another one for the great webOSInternals! Do it guys... they are so important to webOS.
-@MrKal_El
Just donated $35.00 a minute ago. Thanks for everything y'all do!
"Hello. My name is Knox, and I'm addicted to webOS patches!"
Just donated $30.00. Keep up the good work and thank you.
Donated $35 a few minutes ago! Too bad I can't donate more, as I am very thankful for everything WebOSInternals and would love nothing more than to donate!
Well.... I donated recently, but, certainly a good cause & the work done by all homebrewers is much appreciated. So, sure: count me in for this WebOS-a-thon (done).
One comment. Not to diminish all the hard work done by the WebOS Internals folks (they are the most prominent for a reason), but, I'm afraid we're drawing funds & attention to one place when there are additional developments happening by other groups (ie: Canuck Coding for WebOS Quick Install & WebOS Repair / MetaView & Frantid for Ubercalendar & DanPLC for MusicPlayer Remix 2.0 to name three groups).
All said: thanks again / I already benefit from using Preware & I hope to enjoy UberKernel soon as well.
Edit: I just read Rod's note above / looks like he already addressed the same concern
I donated. So thankful for their hard work! I just hope Sprint picks up the new WebOS phones and Tablet next year. I don't want an android.
Here's what I think about special forum titles for "donating", :P
I donated. At this moment homebrew is the driving force in webOS so it makes sense that the major webOS blogs support the organized movement.
$50 Just Now!
Just a reminder: Everyone should post their donation in the forun thread so that it will be added to the donor list and counted toward the total.
thanks again for everyone's generousity
Please remember to log your donation in the tracking thread:
http://bit.ly/96o0HP
And thanks to Dieter. It's very nice of PC to offer a title change. Lets be sure to get UberKernel on to 2.0 by giving generously! WebOS Internals hosts most other homebrew patches/app in preware, so they also incur costs for those other devs don't have to pay, so this fundraiser helps all of the homebrewers!
just donated $50. keep up the good work.
