Double-tap to select text [webOS 2.x] 7

by Adam Marks Mon, 28 Feb 2011 11:49 am EST

This tip is only for devices running webOS 2.0 and higher

Highlighting/selecting editable text in webOS 2.0 works the exact same way as it does in webOS 1.x by using the Shift key () and dragging your finger anywhere on the screen in the direction that you want to move the cursor, but there is now an additional method to select editable text. If you double-tap on editable text, it will select the word that you tapped on. And instead of just double-tapping, you can also drag across the screen after the second tap to highlight a long string of text.

Note that while this seems to work in most apps, it does not seem to work everywhere.

I hate the implementation of selecting text used in webOS 1.x. That method is very awkward for a lefty. Personally, I wish they would just use a long press.

on 1.X, double tapping on text in a browser smart-zooms to the column width. Do these now conflict?

Don't think so. I don't have my wife's Pre2 with me right now, but I seem to remember the smart-zoom working in the browser still.

This tip refers to editable text only. So for text on the browser, reading an email, etc, double tap still zooms in

I hate to say it but iOS probably has the best way of selecting text. While I find that it's easier to tap anywhere in a text field to edit text in webOS (say for correcting typos), when it comes to selecting a large block of text, iOS wins. With RIM and Google competing to steal as much of Palm's good ideas as they can, perhaps Palm can grab one of Apple's better ideas for themselves to improve their copy and pasting.

I just saw how iOS does copy+paste yesterday.. Interesting for sure, but yes I wonder if that conflicts with zoom. Hmm.. I hope webos figures this out soon!
