Droid defectors, More 3D Gaming Mayhem and Hardware Speculation... From the Forums 32
by Robert Werlinger Fri, 29 Jan 2010 11:45 am EST
Here's some of the latest talk in the forums:
- Sure, the Droid may have been big stuff when it was released a few months ago on Verizon, but now there's a new kid on Big Red's block: the Pre Plus. Member emedic is considering the switch from the Droid to the Pre. Any other Droid users feeling webOS envy?
- So, you're on Verizon and you've purchased one of Palm's newest handsets. Mega poster dbd wants to know: what are your first impressions?
- The 3D games keep rolling into the App Catalog like an epic winter storm on the east coast during Christmas, and folks are talking about some of the latest and greatest on the gaming front like Brothers In Arms from Gameloft.
- Forum members are speculating: just what is that Palm C40 that keeps popping up in inventory screens? Is it a a new handset, the fabled PalmPad, or somebody's idea of a cruel joke? Chime in with your thoughts.
- New to webOS or thinking of making the switch? After you've read and watched our own guide to webOS, be sure to check out the FAQ that member sketch42 has compiled which covers just about everything a Palm newbie needs to know.
We look forward to seeing you in the forums! (remember: registration is free, and the benefits of doing so are immense)
Update: Here's one more thread we'd like to draw your attention to: Palm Pre Plus GPS Issues on Verizon - it's starting to look like a goodly amount of Pre Plus users are having location issues.

First!! and welcome to all the new VZW users!
I have a Moto Droid and would love to get a Pre Plus! so much more refinded and nice design!
We had a few folks at work all ready to pick up the Droid. And they talked and talked about it. They purchased it. And we hear nothing else from them. Although they look at me annoyed when I show them Need For Speed or other games they can't run. :)
LOL yeah thats right, show all them Droid assholes that the pre shit's all over the droid
"mega poster"...Bwaaahahaha!
What he said. :-D
Hey, THANKS Robert!!
I'm glad i checked out this article. :)
my buddy left webOS for Android back before 1.3.5.x and he told me the other day he misses our UI. I told him after my son has been playing the 3D games on my Pre, I see him trying to "swipe" on his iPod touch. :)
both me and my wife had Pre's on Sprint from launch for about 45 days. But due to service issues with roaming and no data. We came back to Verizon. Long story short - for a month we kept swiping and even the other day she told me every now and again she will swipe up to close LOL. Man we miss the webOS!
How did returning to Verizon help your coverage? Sprint Pre roams on both networks for free.
well I know they roam but I had other issues:

AND
http://forums.palm.com/t5/webOS-Software/Inconsistent-Signal-Issue/td-p/...
Besides when you roam its just 1x data not very usful on a webOS device :-)
Plus where I has both an AT&T and Verizon repeater which might also worsen the Sprint coverage. TRUST me i'd rather be on sprint to save some $$$
Now I have seen some folks say with 1.3.x.x it helped this issue? any truth in it?
Sprint doesn't roam to all towers of Verizon and the data isn't good when roaming. Verizon is a much better network. But, if Sprint is good enough for where you are, it is much cheaper.
Palm pre has big potential, i knew that 6 months back. I don't know where all this complaining was about. I even get the BofA discount, total bill for the month of December $53.65
I have to admit that I was growing frustrated with WebOS even though I know it has huge potential. I was thinking about jumping ship to android and my friend was working hard to convince me to get the Hero or Moment.
Once I heard about the new 1.4 update, I knew that I wasn't going anywhere. I am sticking with WebOS and Palm, I've been a palm user for almost 10 years now and I can't see myself using any other device.
Yeah me too, those were the exact phones I was looking at. Every update was just enough to hook me back in, and with 1.4...well that'll just be sweet.
I like these "From The Forums" articles. Well done.
yeah
i love how palm users are so dedicated (for the most part) like AD2050. im a new palm guy myself with my first one being the sprint pre but i love it. i wanna stick with palm for all the over the air updates. os keeps getting better and i dont even have to change hardware. =]
welcome vzw users!
Very true (and I happen to be a very long time palm user). The greatest will be when they rewrite the UI to take advantage of the GPU for slides, transition effects, transparencies, etc. That's what I'm really waiting for...and like you said, all will be done working on existing hardware.
I love my palm pre.
my girl friend wants to switch to samsung moment I have tried to convince her she is making a mistake but I'm having no luck.
the lady at sprint told her the moment is so much better.
I guess the moment will still be cool but if I could change her mind I would.

I love my palm pre and I wouldn't give it up for anything.
the lady at sprint store told my girlfriend that the samsung moment is so much better thanthe palm pre.
I would do anything to change her mind but she plans on switching
Sometimes when people have a strong thought in an area the best thing is to step back. See if they are willing to look at things objectively, but realize that emotions are a big part of decision making. Focus in on her "needs" and not on your "desires". Try to understand her reasons for wanting the phone - is it features, is it the design, or is it the brand? Assure her that whatever decision she makes you will support, but ask her if she would be willing to go to the store and have someone (or two different people) who is proficient with both phones demonstrate the phones to her. Then let her decide. Just realize that no one is perfect - so if she later regrets her decision, don't say "I told you so!"
i cant tell whether that was satire or if your being serious? lol
what you need tell her is, the palm pre is the best sprint phone hands down.. looks the best and performs the best and has even greater potential.. and comes with a dedicated community of developers and many many patches.
thanks I told her I think she is making a mistake maybe the person at best buy will steer her right when I take her there tonight.
( I believe in my phone's potential and also in palm)
The more I use my Pre the more I love it. Been with Sprint for over 10 years & the price/coverage/ service cannot be beat. I can't understand the issues I hear about bad coverage with Sprint. Everyone in my office is on Verizon but they have to go outside to make a phone call - I have all bars with Sprint. Some of them took the bait for the Moto Droid & I thought it was OK at first - solid build, but kinda bulky. I would like to see the next Pre feel a little less fragile & would really like to see it with a side slider for texting/email in landscape orientation.
Hope Palm is able to hang in there until this whole WebOS thing is discovered by more.
Yeah, I would've really liked to see just that. Same design with the slider going landscape. Of course there was a whole design philosophy going on with the curvature of the opened Pre. But I think, if thought out correctly, it could be well executed in landscape. I would hope they keep the button construction the same, because I love the way the keyboard buttons feel (as opposed to the flat style buttons you see on the Tilt and other HTC type keyboards). The buttons would just be a little wider, which would be welcomed.
My little sister is, now. She didn't consult her big brother and went out and bought a Droid when they launched. She called my Pre the other night, and it sounded like there was some sort of interference, so I started walking around...but nothing improved the signal. At one point, I could make out "I hate this stupid phone" from her end, and I was pretty much sure that it was a problem on her side. I could make out every 3rd word, and I think she complained that her phone really gets clobbered by interference. She never had that problem when she still had her Treo, and she made calls from the same place. It could be the provider, my sister was using Sprint before, but I doubt T-Mobile can be all that much worse in Seattle.
WebOS is the future mobile.
everyone needs to understand this is a brand new OS from a company that was in a financial hole. Sure the pre seems fragile and what not. Palm had to get the Pre out the door quick to increase some kind of cash flow, and that is why OTA updates, and user feedback is very helpful to them. Iphone really can't do anything a Pre can do, neither can a droid or blackberry. Iphone droid and blackberry are pretty solid companies that can afford the latest and greatest hardware. Everyone wants to have an Iphone like phone, but if you look around you'll see that Iphone users are trying to get make a WebOS like feel and look on their Iphones. I'm not knocking any brand but stay tuned to palm they have tons of stuff coming our way. Welcome Vzw to the WebOS Era!

I actually just left the Pre, and headed to the Droid on Verizon. Along with me was my sister and her husband. We figured we have 30 days to try the Droid, and worse-case scenario, we miss our Pre's and switch to the Pre Plus for free. All 3 of us prefer the Droid (pretty strongly) over the Pre. Things I miss are gestures, and the physical formfactor (size, shape, and portrait keyboard). The Droid feels bulky and "unfriendly" in my hand compared to the Pre. I like the UI on Android, but it can't compare to the slick card interface of the Pre. OK, now that I've proven that I'm a fan of WebOS and the Pre, the following words might score more merit with you, and not seem like a trolling fanboy. My Droid does a lot of things better than my Pre. First off, to say it is "snappier" would be an understatement. Everything is much faster. Google Apps (Gmail, Voice, etc) integrate much better on Android (as to be expected). There are sooooo many cool services/apps I didn't know about until I broke free from WebOS and saw what I'd been missing. I also love how everything on the device is customizable. If you are a "tech nerd" there is no doubt you'll prefer the customization of Android. If you are somebody that just wants to buy a phone and setup your email, and do the basics and not really get crazy, then I think WebOS is a better platform (but the Pre is a tad underpowered to run it effectively, in my opinion).
