Droid X Reviewed, how big is too big? [The Competition] 120

Full Droid X Review

While we wait to see what Palm (and now HP) has in store for future webOS hardware, it's interesting to note that while the iPhone 4 kept things (relatively) small but increased pixels, on the Android front manufacturers are going big. Enter the Droid X, a whoppingly large phone that's even larger than the EVO 4G. AndroidCentral has put together a huge Droid X Review if you're interested in the beast coming on July 15th.

Meanwhile, the Pre (and especially the Pixi) are starting to feel positively diminutive compared to the competition. We can dig the pocketability - we still are, actually - but we're wondering: are you hoping for a big screen on the next webOS phone? We're taking an increase in pixels as a given - we're just asking about physical size. Is the Pre's 3.1" screen cramping your style?

Well, those of you who want "small" or "iPhone" (3.5" vs. the Pre's 3.2"?? c'mon....) ALREADY HAVE a cute, stylish "fashion accessory" phone to go with your chihuahua, thank you very much. So please let us geeks have ours now....

Agree. There is a size limit to how big the screen can get before it's too big. Having played w/the EVO @ the Sprint store, 4.3 isn't too big, yet. IMHO.

The reason that I want a bigger screen is that I'd like a much more viable laptop replacement. 3.1 on the Pre is too small. Makes it hard to view regular websites. Way too much scrolling around. 4.3 on the EVO makes it better, while still keeping the phone portable.

Although I haven't played w/one yet, I suspect the Dell Streak's 5" screen is going to be too big.

There is a balance between portability and usability as a laptop replacement. I don't know exactly what that balance is, but the EVO's screen does not seem to have gone beyond portability the way the iPad has. And the Pre's screen just gives up too much in terms of usability, IMHO.

I have to agree that 4.3 isnt too big. The evo size with a slide down landscape keyboard (5 row with D-pad) would be the sweet spot on size. Add in the hummingbird CPU/GPU, powered by a 3000Mah+ battery, running webOS on a 16GB built in memory with a 32GB SD, and a nice high res screen. With a root, preware, teather and wifi hotspot setup would be a dream. All I would need is for BT external keyboard and slingbox to run and it would be perfect.

I'd buy one. Even at $1,000 off-contract, I'd buy one.

Ditto! Now I love webOS, but Im starting to like the new hardware coming out for all the newer droids has me looking at the "greener grass". I sure do hope that HP/palm see the trend for these 4-4.3 high res phones and landscape keyboards.

No. I want a faster phone with improved battery, higher resolution and more ram & flash memory. HP should thin it but please don't make it bigger. It has to fit into my front pocket and I don't want to phone with a tablet. Btw I would love to have a tablet with WebOS additionally.

Amen. I'm not buying anything that big.

I wish there was a 4th option in the poll.

I think a 3.5" to 4" screen would be ideal w/ a great resolution.

Anything bigger and I think you are approaching a slab/tablet wannabe.

The EVO is not horrible in size, but is a bit large for my tastes.

Agreed! Please add a 4th option LOL. I'd like around 4" but not sure if I'd want larger.

I will have to agree. A 4" screen even 4.1" screen would be prime!

Also make it a portrait keyboard with an onscreen keyboard option. I have both on my Pre and let me tell you it's awesome. For quick texts I just use on screen but the nice part about portrait keyboards is I can type one handed with ease when need be.. And I can type more accurate with the physical keyboard for longer stuff like this comment.. My friend has a landscape keyboard on his phone and absolutely hates it because it's awkward to hold the phone sideways to type. I've used it.. He isn't far from the truth... Especially if you reach for something while your conversing with someone. The landscape typing devices tend to get off balanced one handed and your quickly trying to catch the device before it flips outta your hand....

tats one of those good idea bad idea items....

and did I see someone request a bigger phone like 4.5" so they could replace their laptop???? It's a phone!! Dang!

4" screen w/portrait keyboard? Isn't that an epic 4g?

And I'm one of the people who would like to have a laptop replacement. Yes, I want that. My phone is with me all the time. Either in my pocket or in a belt clip. Getting information from it is a simple matter of using one hand to get it, turn it on and start searching. Then when I'm done, close it and put it away. Super simple.

Doing the same thing with a laptop requires carrying a backpack. Taking it out, waiting for it to recover from hibernate - because there's no way the battery will last long enough just sleeping, finding a place to sit so that I can hold it and type. Then when done undoing all of those things.

A laptop is useful for people who need to transport their desktop experience around with them. They move from one desk to another. But a phone is useful for getting data while still moving. It doesn't require a desk to use it.

Hence any phone that can get me closer to the laptop experience, while allowing me to remain on the go, is really useful. The Pre's 3.1" screen is too small. Evo's 4.3" screen is much better. I don't know what too big is until I play with it. If it were up to me, I'd make the next WebOS device with at least a 4.3" screen.

@Tasselhof you are 100% on point.

3.5" - 4" is the sweet spot. After playing with the EVO 4G I realized it's just too big.

While we're talking specs I'd like it thin; I'll learn to love a soft keyboard (aka no clunky slider) to make that happen. 1 GHz is a foregone conclusion and a 1500+ mAh battery please.

my Pre is a great phone and I'm ready for v2.

Geeks have an Archos. Poser-geek.

my option is not there.. I'd like to see maybe a 3.7-3.9 which the pre could have been and kept it's form factor.. i think

I agree 100%, 3.7-3.9 would be the perfect screen size for me.

me too XD

Whoever made this poll must be a Apple fan (not fanboy, just fan). Of course with the options people are going to vote for the iPhone option. We need a new poll, one with a 3.6 to 4.0 inch option. That would have more than 50% of the votes. Personally, I want bigger. For me the EVO is my preferred size of phone. But then again, I'm used to BIG things. haha. I will like to see what the Samsung Epic feels like in the hand when it comes out.

I agree

+1

Amen to that. I think 4 would be the biggest I'd like, with something between that and 3.5 being ideal. But I haven't tried carrying a 4 in. device in my pocket, so I'm not sure how much I'd like any new size until I have to carry it around all day.

Sorry to hear that. I've been carrying a 6 inch unit around for a few years and I'd have to admit, it gets kinda bulky........

Sorry, could resist.... :-p

So you are used to the smaller form factor then?

;)

Everyone knows that 5" works just fine and in certain applications is preferred. However, 6.5"+ is pretty much the minimum for confidence......in smartphones. We'll just have to see what palm has in store. ;)

Hmm, are we all talking about the same thing here? LOL

There is a Palm pun that could be thrown in here also, but I think it's best to leave it where it's at. ;)

...... "Six inches in the Palm of your hand"......

I just don't think that tagline would go very well. :-)

... Sorry, elephant in the room. It had to be said.

Codename for this device is ROSIE.

Haha, I guess I set myself up for that. Although I don't carry my "device" in my pocket, fits better in my pants ;).

agree 100%. 3.7 up to 4 inches, but over 4 is too big. I still want a phone that fits easy in my pocket, and I will wait for a webOS Tablet to be my "laptop replacement"

Same here 3.5" to 4" max. People look ridiculus holding a 4.3" block up to their faces.

HAHAHA you are so right!

3.5 IMO is a perfect fit... BUT i still LULULOVE my PRE size!!

>>>Palm, PLEASE KEEP THE PHYSICAL KEYBOARDS

+1 3.5" to 4"

My thoughts exactly. 3.7 to 3.9... same form factor.
I hope they release 2 - 3 new phones with in a 1yr span. A flagship, and other form factors to give us options.

The Palm Pre's form factor is highly underrated, in my opinion. It's definitely the most stylish phone out there right now, and I'm hoping that any new hardware will stay true to the Pre (and Pixi's) style. I think with any new hardware, there will have to be some amazing advertising to draw in those not loyal to Palm, as well as the app support to at least rival the Android and iOs repetoire (10,000 apps at least) which seems a bit far off. Anyway, I still consider the Pre's hardware far from obsolete, I just wait for those days where there's actually a new app released that makes me say I need to buy it.

Unfortunately the entry I wanted to make wasn't available. The screen on the EVO, while nice, is really too big for me. I'd say something just under 4" would be the best, perhaps 3.7 or 3.9".

Holy Moley, we thought the Titanic was big!?!?

iPhone size and a physical keyboard are just what I want in my next webOS phone.

Although, swype might change my mind about a physical keyboard. Palm, are you listening? 15 months left on my contract...

For marketing punch, Palm should position these 4" screens like the digital equipment of buying "Large Print" books for older people with poor eyesight. :-)

I too would like a 3.5 or 3.8 size screen with a physical keyboard. That would be nice.

Why not just carry around a mini laptop around, lol

Precisely the point - these devices are becoming laptop/netbook replacements. The pre's 3.2" screen is still too small for doing serious work on, so I still have to carry around a 12" laptop or a 10" netbook. But a 4", even a 5" device with a slide-out keyboard, etc., would work for me, as it means I would no longer have to carry around the larger system.

I wanted another option too...more screen, but still pocketable. It's all about compromise! With higher resolution, the screen might seem bigger, but my iPhone envy may not be satiated with the same as we have! OS wise, it's no contest. If HP really wants to win, they will have Big and Small options!

that is TOO big. any where between 3.7-4.0 is perfect for me and i have small hands. the Pre is okay for me right now except for reading text...just from web pages is really hard but I love it. I can't wait for the new one...i have two upgrades and i am holding them for this phone.

I can say this for certain...If the new Palm phone is not at least 3.5," I'm out like trout! Yes I want pocketability but I really want the ability to play all the cool 3D games that are going to be coming out soon and what better way to play those games then to have a large screen.....Also I kind of feel that Palm would be taking a chance if they don't jump on board with the look that we are seeing all the Motorola and HTC phones with. The curvey look is cool on the Pre and all but is it practical? Just some thoughts...

After using the iPhone's gyroscope feature and seeing it in action, screen size won't matter much in the near future.

I'm no iPhone fan, but if you haven't checked out the shooting range demo then you're missing out. That feature alone should/could revolutionize handheld/mobile gaming.

Super surprised it's not being salivated over by all the big names yet like Nintendo, and Playstation.

I went ahead and picked option 2, but really what I care about is the overall size of the phone, not the screen. I don't notice the difference between my iPod screen and my Pre's because the Pre doesn't have the on screen keyboard. What matters to me is that the phone will fit nicely in the side pocket of my carpenter jeans (which the iPhone barely does). I can't stand the way a phone feels in my pants pocket, and if the only phones that come out are bigger than the pre/iphone I'm going to shoot someone.

I'm with a lot of the other's. I put 4 inches or more, but really I would prefer a MAX of 4 inches, and would be fine with a touch less...

10 inches, with a dual kick stand and a racing stripe.
-differentiate the product line :-P

I'm hoping that the introduction of a new, 4"+ WebOS smartphone will be accompanied by a refresh of the Pre and Pixie - faster processors, more memory, etc - in the same basic form factor. So those of you whining about NOT wanting a larger device can just pipe down, thank you! :-)

slabe phone with 4.0" screen with res high than iphone4s I'm talkin full hd screen

slabe phone with 4.0" screen with res high than iphone4s I'm talkin full hd screen

Why don't people that want 4" or more just go ahead and get an iPad already, because that is what you really want, not a phone.

a 4" screen is not that big.. have u ever held an evo or a droid x? they may look big but once in hand its nothing!! 4" screen is perfect

I've used one and I can't figure out how I would carry it around. I use a small holster for my Pre. I can't do the front pocket thing. An Evo is just too big for me.

I wont be one of those guys with a phone so big it requires a holster. Those days are over. A phone has to be concealable without people thinking I'm happy to see them. Anything more, make it an Archos or mini-slate MM device. Its a phone all day, if I need that much hardware, might as well carry a netbook.

I don't understand why people want big phones... is our population GOING BLIND?
I love powerful pocketable phones... (I have yet to see an EVO 4g in person... so waiting -I do like the dimensions of the new iPhone).

Otherwise, you need a laptop or netbook or...

no man 4" is the pecfect size in my mind anything bigger is crazy I mean it's a phone not a vcr. I'm hopin for full hd also

Give me a pixi the size of the Pre ( slider open) with a screen bigger than 3.2 but no bigger than 3.8 and we GOOD ;)

A phone is somethnig you must carry with you 24/7. Any day, any season, any situation and any company. You are not going to always wear a bag but you must "wear" a phone.

So is absolutly needed that a phone is as pocketable as posible and as confortable to carry as possible. Also even being able to use a phone one handed is good.

I do recognize that a big screen is very good for some things, and that currently one of these portable devices could be the replacement for a laptop... but for that it DOES exist the ipad or any other kind of tablets. Because for those needs (replacement of a laptop) even a 4 inches screen would be too small.

So I prefer smaller form factors for a phone.

Swell, four inches and still a battery that dies faster than a skydiver with no shroud lines. I wouldn't mind a minor upgrade, maybe to 3.5 with some high res. But, let the 4" crowd go to HTC because no screen will be big enough for them so the sooner they fill out their change of address cards, the better.

It's kind of funny, really... We spent 15 years making cell phones smaller and smaller, and now in the span of a year, we're going the OPPOSITE direction.

Personally, I'd like something a bit between 3.5 and 4 inches, still with a nice slide out QWERTY.

The idea of shrinking devices came from them being "dumb phones", so the electronics needed for a dumb phone have gone down. Once you get into the realm of smartphones, running applications, and even replacing the need for a laptop in some situations, the desire for a larger screen comes in.

Now, Apple has addressed the situation by increasing the quality of the screen, so you can fit more pixels in a smaller space, but that won't solve the problem of the limited size being a problem.

+1

I'm over the physical keyboard and I never thought I would be. Bu the Pre's screen is totally incapable of supporting an OSK because of the size. Moreover, can anyone name one reason other than "I can't use it one-handed" that a big screen is bad? And no, I haven't read the comments above.

no man 4" is the pecfect size in my mind anything bigger is crazy I mean it's a phone not a vcr. I'm hopin for full hd also

yea i own a htc evo and trust me is not to big, i will love for hp/palm to put the webos in something like the evo or Samsung galaxy s type of hardware.

It seems to me that the Galaxy S(Epic 4G @ Sprint) fits most of what people are describing here. I know for me it's like Samsung built a phone to macth my personal check list of features: 4" super AMOLED screen, slide out landscaped keyboard, wifi & 4G, removable storage. All it's missing is webOS.

I'm all for Palm making a Pre 2 in the same form factor with a better processor and 32gb mem for those folks that value the compact size. But I want a bigger screen and there's no reason Palm should only make a phone in one style.

When I first got my Pre (a year ago), I was very attracted by the small size ... very pocket-friendly. That's still a consideration, but the more I use the features of an always-connected phone, the more I want a bigger screen. Especially things like ebooks, GPS, and web browsing. If I'm going to always carry (and be dependent) on a palm-sized computer, I'm feeling like there's definite advantages to having a 4+" screen.

4+ IS THE SWEET SPOT! Everything else is too small and actually a 4" negates the need in my book for getting a tablet like the iFail devices.

A lot of us geeks want a bigger screen on our phones! If you want a 3.5 sweet spot then get an iFail. It's already at that size.

I wish apple bougt us instead of palm....

I mean Hp lol

Not sure which of your posts is more misguided. :)

If you like apple, and Steve Jobs shaping your wireless life, go get an iphone.

anything bigger than 3.7 is too big. The next webOS phone can have a 3.5 inch screen and be a little bit bigger than the pre, but smaller than the sheephone.

no man 4" is the pecfect size in my mind anything bigger is crazy I mean it's a phone not a vcr. I'm hopin for full hd also

3.8" to 4" would be ideal in my opinion, but it should be made as thin as possible with a thin bezel as well so that the screen and gesture area is virtually the only space on the surface area.

well I'm hoping there is a "line" of phones. 3" screen upgrade for the pixi, 4" uprgade for the pre, 4.5-5" full touch slab. And a 10" tablet. But really if only one phone is to come out 3.5-4 that's where its at. And keep portrait keyboard but with better buttons (like my treo, I miss it)

Seems like there will be a line of new Palm devices, what with the talk of devices plural. I'd love to have a choice of features and functionality, something in the middle range of what you describe.

no man 4" is the pecfect size in my mind anything bigger is crazy I mean it's a phone not a vcr. I'm hopin for full hd also

There's a way to make the screen better without making the form factor any bigger. Look at the palm pixi: move the keyboard down as much as possible, and move the Mic up as much as possinle and you'd have a bigger screen.

Same with the Pre. Sacrifice a little bit of the gesture area, and you can expand the screen down, and it's possible now to move the screen horizontally more. See pix of the phone dissassembled and you'll see the wasted space.

I bought an EVO and planned to use it as a dev phone only. It ended up replacing my Pre as my daily use phone. Now using the tiny Pre screen sucks, especially for web surfing.

The EVO fits very comfortably in my pockets and I wear relatively skinny jeans. Unless you're wearing skin tight hipster jeans, you should be fine. If you're a guy and you are wearing skin tight jeans, snap out of it.

3.7 or 3.8 with a nice curved Treo-style keyboard please.

a true Retinal Display (a display that shoots video into the back of your eyes, not the Marketing term for iPhone's display) or a projector. Or the screen that your able to roll out/up.

Ideally HPalm should release a new versions of the Pre and Pixi with aproximatelt the same form factor PLUS at least one other form factor along the lines of a 4"+ slab. There is no 'perfect' form factor (see Malcolm Gladwell's story on pasta sauces). People want choices, but not to be overwhelmed with choices, three is typically the magic number.
The elegant curves of the Pre and Pixi should be retained IMO, not only are they graceful and stylish, they make the phones distinctive from the sea of blocky smartphone hardware.

Higher pixels mean larger screen size if for no other reason than to help offset fat-fingering.

But I'd still like the larger screen for more viewing space and less zoom in.

Motorola is crap the only way I'd leave Palm is for HTC. but 3.5 to 4 sounds perfect for a screen. But I want a physical keyboard for my next phone....... It better be a Palm.

3.7 is the spot for me. Not all of us geeks have fat sausage hands from never getting off the couch.

3.7-4.0 with qwerty keyboard = PERFECTION!!

If they expand the width and height of the pre to that of the 8330 Curve, still pocketable, they could fit a 3.7" screen and have a keyboard with bigger, and/or better spaced keys.

3.7-3.9 is nice

how about options? we don't want ONE new phone, we want 3-4 different ones to choose from from small to large from keyboard to virtual keyboard.

I agree, why cant Palm now do both?

The rumors indicate that there will be three or more devices released...the question is what they are, and when.

Oh this would be soo nice. It is what it should have been from the beginning but I won't pout! PALM left us PIM-less so this can fit it!

yep I'm on the 3.5 / 4.0 train .... This phone has fun games but my thumb covers the screen when I play lol and I have lil fingers so a bigger screen would make me happyer just as long as the quality it tip top !!!!!

That thing looks more like a handheld game console than a phone

I hope Palm can do both, continue improving Pre and release new larger screen phones.

Also Pre still shows more info (using smaller fonts) compared to the new iPhone. I loaded Precentral on both phones and the Pre showed more info from the site.

Although I voted for the big screen, I think the perfect sweet spot would be between 3.8" to 4". The upcoming Samsung EPIC 4G has a 4" screen, which is perfect, but it's wrapped up in a huge body, actually making is a little larger overall than even the HTC EVO 4G.
I like the Pre or iPhone design in which the phone itself is not much larger than the screen. ALL screen on the front. I think that design with a 4" screen would be about perfect.

I don't really care about the size of the screen, just make the hardware reliable please, HP. Then I'll come back to WebOS.

Too big? I guess it just depends on what you are buying the device for. For me, I want a Phone / Email / Music device that I can stick in my pocket. The Pre's size is PERFECT. I don't expect my Pre to replace my laptop.

I guess, if I were more of a gamer or video-watcher, I could see the larger screen being attractive...but that's not me. I am a small business owner.

Now, you want to sell me a WebOS tablet that me and my family can use around the house for entertainment and news -- I'll be first in line! :)

Loving the size of the EVO, not sure I'd go any larger.

People who complain about the size must have small hands.

they should come out with more than just 1 phone. The should go with a big phone & a bigger phone to make sure everybody is happy ...lol

3.7" - 4.0"

3.7" - 4.0" Please.

Stretch the Evo screen to 4.5" without making the device any bigger. To the people whining about bigger screens, if Palm expects to compete they must have a bigger screen. If they want to get us Evo, Droid X, Galaxy S, etc defectors back they definitely will need a bigger screen. After getting used to a bigger screen I can't see going back to that tiny suck @ss 3.1" screen on the Pre, it's not a good experience.

this is yet another issue that is strictly personal preference, and for me and what I use my Pre for, it's perfect. I loved my BB Curve 8330 for it's size because of how it felt in my hand, but it still didn't pocket very well. I use a holster now so if I asked for anything new on the upcoming hardware I'd say size it out to the 8330.

I love the pocketabiity of my Pre and voted for the 3.5" option on the condition that it be squeezed onto a phone just like it or just a tad bigger. It looks like there'd be a way to make the screen wider and taller on the Pre as is. The button took up lots of the gesture area and the plus's LED light could be moved and I don't use it anyway to go to card view, so the gesture area could be moved down.

4.3" is definately NOT too big. I use the HTC HD2 and would NEVER go back to a smaller screen.

Even though many people when they first saw the screen called this out as the reason it would fail, it is one of the key reasons for its success. It is a delight to watch movies and read on this thing.

The phone hardware on the HD2 is excellent (1ghz processor, capacity screen etc). The lack of the Palm Pre in Australia forced me to move to something else (thanks Palm - NOT!) I have learnt that small is not always beautiful.

Something that may not be well known here. If the iPhone is pocketable then so is this device (its slimmer than the iPhone and only a measley 2mm wider and taller.

I carry this in my pocket all the time.

Should the next WebOS phone be a big screen device ? Absolutely, I can't go back now. I tried an iPhone again recently and its like going back in time and looking through a letter box!. So Palm/HP now need to go bigger to get my dollars.

Good point as147! I played around with the EVO, and my first impression was that when I tried to use it one handed for simple navigation, every time I reached for the captive home key, I felt like the phone was going to twist out of my hand. Even one handed down-swipe to unlock, verses the pre's swipe-up, made the phone feel unstable in my grip. But, I will have to agree with as147 in the sense that I would eventually get use to the change, and spoiled by the screen. I hate scrolling around to read a webpage and having game buttons so cramped together. And in that situation, you wouldn't be able to lure me back to a smaller screen phone no matter what.

I'm willing to compromise for a 3.7 inch screen like the Nexus One as long as it has at least an IPS screen or similar pixel count to the iPhone 4. 3.5 is decent but even still I sometimes struggle viewing some pages on my iPod Touch. 3.7 inch screen seems like a much better offer since it allows a way better view, as proven by then N1.

3.7" screen + pico projector. Keep the real keyboard. Up the battery, RAM, CPU. 4G.

Palm/HP can do both, but I truly like the size and pocket-ability of my current Pre. I have gotten older, but pinch and changing the font size works for me.

I switch from a Pre to the Evo a month ago. I also own an Itouch. I am not what I would call a geek. :)
But there is no way I would go back to a screen smaller than 4". The Evo screen is awesome for me, I think it could be a little smaller but nothing under 4".

Is that a netbook or perhaps a Gas station size microwave? (Avoiding craving for a Burrito)

God I hope palm/hp doesn't create some huge monstrosity based on this poll. Keep it small with a slidey keyboard

I have both the EVO and the Pre. The EVO is 6.2 cubic inches, the Pre is 6.1 cubic inches. The EVO is flat and fits better in your pocket. The new iPhone 4 is cute but seems like the kid's version. The Droid X has the same screen size as the EVO but wastes extra space at the top and bottom.

Im an industrial design student.. and I LOVE my Pre...but its just wayy too small!! when chillin with friends, and you get in a debate over the name of an actor in a movie, and everyone pulls out their phones to look it up, and for me all I have to do is just type in the name of the movie and bam!! but when I pull out my phone, I look like a sissy pulling out this tiny device.. small doesn't work, period..Apple even said the reason they dropped the old curvy design was bc they couldn't fit everything they wanted (or we wanted) in it, ehhmmmm, including the antenna!! thats why the iPhone 4 is more slate like bc its packed to the max, with little to no room to spare..don't get me wrong these are "MOBILE" smartphones soo 4 max maybe 4.1

I also play a sport and when wearing athletic shorts almost all the time, I have no place to sick my phone..other than under the elastic band, and with my pre, it just looks awkward, soo thin is a must!!!

due to VZW's unwillingness to allow aGPS on my Pre Plus, I amm switching to the Droid X. HP is going to disappear WebOS phones, so I give up on what was the most promising IS on the market. 4.3 inches is far from too big. The X is a multimedia powerhouse, so a big screen is an important part of that experience.
