Ellen DeGeneres gives Pixi phones to screaming audience 28

by Derek Kessler Thu, 03 Dec 2009 6:04 pm EST

You’ve gotta love daytime talk shows, eh? Today’s taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show brought back the 12 Days of Giveaways, a segment where DeGeneres gives away stuff to the audience leading up to the Christmas holiday. She kicked off the series with an electronics bang, giving everybody in the audience a Barnes & Noble Nook eReader, a Powermat wireless charger, a MiFi portable wireless router, a Nokia Booklet netbook with two months of AT&T service, and our favorite, a Palm Pixi. Approximate retail value: $1450. Of course, you couldn’t really hear her describe the gadgets over her screaming audience. Yeah, they were a little bit on the excited side of life. Video is above, earplugs are encouraged.

Ellen’s not the only one giving away Palm phones. Palm is too - via their monthly Facebook giveaway. This month Palm is asking for you to comment on who on your holiday shopping list deserves a Palm phone, and it’s okay to enter yourself as the lucky gift recipient. Palm, however, is giving you an option: Pre or Pixi?

Was she holding the nook upside down? lol

it's not how you hold it, it's how you use it.

They gave all these to everyone?
I wanna be on that show

Yeah. Otherwise all those ladies in the audience are going to feel pretty silly for jumping up and down and screaming like that for nothing.

HAHAHA Did anyone else hear what happened. Listen as she starts to announce the Pixi and she says phone thats really thin they whole audience thought they were getting iphones and as she continues to say Palm the audience goes really quite in disappointment.

Do you need a Doctor four your Ears?
Or do you earn Money vom Apple?

iPhone isnt thin....
And the Womans where Crying louder @ showing the phone then @ talking about how thin it is.

Bad flameing! :p

and.. crazy American TV shows....

oh btw.. are the show only for girls?... looks so

What the hell are you talking about? As soon as, she opened the box everyone went crazy and jumped up when they seen it. Moron, this isn't theiphoneblog.com, sorry..

Joes, I'm worried for you. They got really quite to hear what they were getting next. As so as she said Palm Pixi they freaked out even more. Are you an iphone user yourself who got stuck using a touch screen keyboard and your ego is so badly hurt that your whole perception on anything pre is just completely distorted? I hate to make assumptions but that's the only logical reason I can come up with as to why you would make such a ridiculously far fetched statement.

I wish my girlfriend would get that excited about technology. she complains about the universal remote having too many buttons.
Nice to see the Nokia Booklet 3g getting some customers, too bad everyone else has to pay $600 for it w/o a contract.
Joescan09 is right. They are screaming when they hear about a "thin" phone. Then, Ellen is talking about a "real keyboard" and they are thinking "yaaayy... wait. what? iPhones have physical keyboards now?"
I also noticed there were a couple of dudes in the audience too.

Haha, well they're better off with a pixi .. they will know soon.

Is the above video not a YouTube vodeo?

It is not a YouTube vodeo.

Haha that's mean, Kessler. The least you could do is correct him, instead of mock him. Not that isn't, a youtube video.

our site is gonna be bombarded with idiot women who just got their new phones.

Haha that brings up a good point. Does anyone know the ratio of men to women for this forum?

Why does this matter?

Are you implying that all women are idiots, that all the women on the show who got free phones are idiots, or that only the women who are idiots would come to our site? Just curious.

Funny, everything in that giveaway requires an adapter or service plan except for the Nook. Even that requires you to pay for books. For a giveaway, the recipient is out of a lot of money to enjoy the gift.

Also, what about the audience menders who can't pass the credit check for a service agreement. Verizon charges quite a bit of money for a data plan with that Myfi. Sprint may not provide great service for some and that is really important when talking about a phone that has no wifi. How many gadgets are there that are even compatible with that charging pad? These all seem like very strange gifts for average Janes in a studio audience.

They can as manufactures usually loos money on the entry price than without. Nook for example, makes more money on the books and looses money on the price they set for the actual device. This is why you can give away for free - cus that's not how they make their money, anyway.

That's cause this is just an advertisement for all these products. And all these women are just cheering because they get free stuff. They could be giving away anything at all.

It looks like there's four different carriers in that giveaway: T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. Each would probably be around a $100 plan like Sprint's, so that's some serious monthly bills for some "free" gifts.

Oh, and don't forget that you have to report their value as untaxed income.

If the ladies are smart they'll give the gadgets to friends and family and avoid the recurring pain of four monthly bills.

I was an audience member... you need to pay attention or not comment if you didn't hear clearly.
1. The NOOK, was actually a $300 gift card to Barnes & Nobel. You could purchase whatever you wanted. The NOOK, was just to draw attention, but it CLEARLY say "$300 gift card" under the 1st box. Pay attention!
2. The Pixi came with 5 months FULL DATA & VOICE from Sprint. The phones were given a promotional telephone number that expires 5 months after activating the phone. After the 5 months, yes, you need to put service in your own name and the number will change So, no credit check for us "Average Janes"
3. The charging pad comes with the attachments for 8 different types of connections, including iPhones & iPods.
4. The MiFi, is 6 months PAID... nothing out of pocket.

WE DID NOT HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING OUT OF POCKET!!! So get the facts before you start spewing crap.

I swear those women knew what that phone was... cause they screamed like they were Palm fangirls.

I'd like to know how Barnes & Noble can justify giving away all those Nooks when they can't even meet demand for the ones ordered by people who purchased them moments after they became available (seriously, look at some of the comments on Twitter on 11/30). People have been cancelling deliveries, or receiving free shipping because their device is going to be delayed. Not cool.

You have the networks picking up some of the tab, the compainies pick up the rest for advertizing. Its a win win for both. While Ellen is no OPRAH, its the same concept. Harpo Productions gives stuff away, but at a discounted rate to give advertizing to the companies. The Pixi is being pushed toward women, so Ellen is a good place to advertize.

I would not be suprized if a lot of this stuff ends up on Ebay. I had a boss that did that constantly. He would enter givaways, then when he won, it was up on ebay. Heck if you gave him a pen for christmas, it would be up on e-bay.

Cheaper then TV Commercial Spots! ;)

Accounting stuff I'm sure. Allocated overhead. Keeps them in the black(& the IRS off their back). As for Ellen and Oprah: tax write offs. They keep more of their income. When I get my couple of millions, I'm giving stuff away too. : )

well worth the read.I found it very informative as I have been researching a lot lately on practical matters such as you talk about free bets no deposit required steroids buy clasamente fotbal
