Email search 8
Trying to find a single email if you have a large number of messages in your inbox or any specific folder can be a tough task if you just try scrolling through all your emails. You are able to sort your email folders in webOS, but that is also not the most efficient way to find that one email. Instead, Palm built in a way to search your emails by "just typing", similar to how the memo search functionality works (which is also absent from a direct search in Universal Search). Unfortunately, there are a few limitations with this functionality, as listed after the break:
- You can only search for the Sender and Subject of the message. The Body of the message is not included
- Only the displayed name of the sender is searchable. If an actual name is listed, any word from that name will be found. For example, a search for "forums" in the screenshot above returns all messages from "PreCentral Forums"
- If only an email address is listed, the search starts with the first letter of the email address. For example, a search for "precentral" will not return an email from podcast@precentral.net. You would need to search for "podcast" for this sender
- You can only search within the current folder you have loaded up, and only for emails that have been loaded onto your device. So, if you have your setting to only retrieve email from the last 14 days, email prior to that date obviously wouldn't be included in the search
If you are looking for a way to do a full search of your entire email account, you may need to rely on the website for your email. If you are using a web-based email account, like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc, you can visit your provider's website ( yahoo.com/mail, gmail.com, hotmail.com, etc) right from the phone's browser and look for the "search" box. While not as convenient as the search within the email app, at least it's an option available to you.

Call me a numbnut if you like, but I had NO idea we could do this. I've wanted to search for emails on a number of occasions, but I had to sort by name or date and then find them like that. Thanks so much for these tips!
PS: First!
If you're numbnut then I am too. Even as a pretty heavy Pre user, I still learn from some of these tips. I believe webOS is the best OS out there, but it is not as easy as iPhone. If it ever gains traction in the marketplace, these tips will become second nature to people.
So, anyone working on a patch so the email search can run out to your mail server(s) and look for emails that aren't downloaded to your devices that satisfy your search criteria?
Maybe I'm missing it, but I can't search for a number..as in an order number in the subject of an email.
you can search for a number if you press-and-hold the orange/silver button and then press the keyboard key for the number. that should work
Adam,
Rock on!! That works...
Well, yes.
Point is, when WebOS was first shown, Apple didn't have any search save for the browser's.
But with iPhone OS 3, Spotlight was introduced (taken right out of Mac OS X). And with it, the ability to search E-Mails (and calendar, music,...) from a central point (Spotlight). WebOS doesn't do that. Not even today, after two years.
It's sad :-(
But while Universal search isn't as universal as Spotlight, the results are presented way better.
good to know that it can be easier to find
