Exclusive: WhitePages for the HP TouchPad ready for release 21

by Tim Stiffler-Dean Thu, 30 Jun 2011 6:16 pm EDT

When James Harris told us that he was working on the official WhitePages app to be released with the HP Veer last month, we loved it from the start. It's an app that is highly desired on every mobile platform currently available, and bringing it to webOS was a big deal for us then. And today, James has given us more great news from his realm of app development. WhitePages for the HP TouchPad is ready for primetime, and they've even made a cool promotional video to show off what the app is capable of.

Jump after the break to read the official Press Release from the company, view a number of screenshots of the app in action and watch the promotional video. As one of the first TouchPad apps to be officially announced after the 3.0 NDA was lifted, we are really happy to see the amount of work that James and the WhitePages team have put into this application. If this is a sign of what other official TouchPad apps will be looking like at tomorrow's release and into the future, we'll be really happy to get our hands on a TouchPad sooner, rather than later.

Press Release:

UNDER EMBARGO UNTIL JULY 1, 2011 AT 8 AM EST
WhitePages Launches its popular On-the-Go Directory for the new HP TouchPad
New app delivers local search for people and businesses, location-aware Store Locator, click to call and printing directions to HP printers
SEATTLE – July 1, 2011— WhitePages (http://www.whitepages.com) today announced the availability of its new on-the-go directory app in support of today’s HP TouchPad launch. Available now , the WhitePages app offers HP webOS users quick access to clear and concise contact information for people and businesses—addresses, phone numbers, maps and driving directions, website link, hours of operation for popular stores and ‘save to contacts’ functionality to keep address books up to date.
“We have seen great adoption since we launched our HP webOS mobile app for phones a little over a month ago,” said Bill Brooks, Mobile Business Development Director at WhitePages. “We love the openness and unique capabilities of the webOS platform, and the TouchPad gave us even more real estate to innovate with distinguishing features like click to call and the ability to print driving directions to any compatible HP printer.”
WhitePages has reached an audience of over 11 million mobile users through its top 10 iPhone and Android reference apps, as well as its popular iPad, webOS, BlackBerry, m.whitepages.com, and text LOOKUP mobile offerings.
The new HP webOS app is loaded with popular WhitePages mobile features:
1. Mobile People Search:  Immediate access to the most comprehensive source of phone numbers and addresses. WhitePages’ database includes contact information for over 200 million people – that’s 90 percent of the US population.
2. Local Business Search:  By detecting user location, WhitePages’ easy to use business search provides fast results for nearby businesses by name or by category.
3. Location Aware Store Locator: Popular stores are automatically suggested based on current location, with one-tap access to over 1 million verified businesses to find the results you want fast.
4. Reverse Phone Lookup:  Putting a name to unknown numbers with ease, standard WhitePages search finds landlines and businesses, and premium search options are available for cell phones and other hard to find numbers.
5. Save to Contacts:  Add caller name, address and number to the TouchPad’s Contacts app with just one tap.
Like the WhitePages mobile app for webOS phones, the new WhitePages TouchPad app is deeply integrated within the HP device experience, thanks to the innovative capabilities of the webOS platform, including:
1. Seamless integration with Just Type, which lets webOS users easily find and update phone numbers, email and physical addresses not already in users’ phone address books.
2. Groundbreaking new application cross-linking capability that allows app developers and merchants to use a simple “W” icon to populate order forms and delivery forms with WhitePages listing information within their own application. The Mobile Florist supports this today, with more applications to come.
In addition, the TouchPad platform also enables the WhitePages app to:
1. Print Driving Directions:  Print any WhitePages listing with driving directions from your current location to compatible networked HP printers.  Printed listings include detailed contact information with maps and directions from Bing™.  Business listings include additional useful information like store hours and website.
2. Click to Call:  From any WhitePages listing it’s just a single tap to place a call.
The WhitePages on-the-go directory app for TouchPad is free and available immediately in the HP webOS App Catalog on the HP TouchPad.

This app rocks. Just put it on my Pre 2, much better than the Yellow Pages app that used to pre-install...

I saw this video the other day and it rocks!

Can't wait to use the TouchPad app.

disparaging remarks? Posts meant to ridicule any app or service available on webOS?? I never thought it would come to this!

This is what happens when you start putting the pressure on the competition. Haters gonna hate.

yep. But I just don't get people like cardfan.

I can see going to the message board of a competing sports team but a competing hi-tech product? Really?

I guess that story comparing religious fanatics to apple fanatics was correct.

Awesome! Why didn't I know this app existed?

as long as its more than a glorified web page

Watch the video and judge for yourself.

Good ad, useful app for those who use the White Pages.

One of the first apps i'll get whenever i upgrade from my pixi plus. Whether it be a webos device or some other platform. Waiting to see what happens with the touchpad or whenever the pre3 comes out.

I like the use of Just Type and Stacks in the video. Did a good job of tailoring it to webOS.

this video is much better than the russell brand ad that cost hp "billions" to produce

I hope HP spent nothing on the Russell Brand Ad. He's a funny guy, but comon... do you really think people will see his ad and say "oh hey if that comedian uses it I'm going to go out and buy one!"
This video has great soothing music and very effective to show you the power of the App.

If HP is going to try to sell the touchpad at the same price as the ipad2 and samsung galaxy then they need to market this way.

People may actually see the device he's using and decide they want to check it out and make an educated decision themselves, actually.

good developer + webOS + Enyo = masterpeice

you're missing 1 important piece. HARDWARE

Despite being released after the ipad2 and the samsung galaxy, the touchpad is the slowest, thickest and heaviest tablet in that price market.

I'm hoping the touchpad price will drop soon or the touchpad2 comes out by the end of the year with hardware and design that knocks the competition out of the game.

and that has nothing to do with White Pages, but there are tons of articles on the hardware, make that same post there

It may be thicker and heavier but slower is off base. Optimization is an issue it appears but I think HP has solid product that will grow market share if they develop consistency in advertising (like a familiar tune or note exchange in each ad) update the software intelligently and follow a credible product pipeline of compatibility and investment protection

I love this app on my Pre! If I forget a customers number or address or name, I can usually get it with this and it's fast!

Oh and I like the new blue background on the Precentral site. All I need is a Pre 3 now.

... on Sprint right? :)

Awesome App James! Nothing but the best from you.
