Eyes-free Speed Dial 16

by Adam Marks Thu, 23 Sep 2010 12:41 pm EDT

Setting a speed-dial in webOS allows you to use a single keyboard key to dial a specific pre-defined phone number (as previously discussed in this tip). Taking this one step further, you can easily set the corner letters on the keyboard (Q and P) for your two most important numbers so you can always access these numbers, even if you are in a position where you can not look down at your phone. Another option for you to quickly find a specific key is to use the F key because it has a slightly raised bump on it to indicate that it's also the #5 key.

Does anyone else have any good systems for using speeddials?

Thanks to our own Jonathan Ezor for suggesting this tip

We need voice dialing. Hopefully, future releases/platforms will have it.

I'm able to type out full text messages while holding the phone under the conference table during meetings. I'm so familiar with the keys ("N key is just above gap between space and period, E key is up one and left one of F key, etc.). It's very easy once you commit yourself to memorizing the keys and feel of them. Sure it is a bit slower but discretely sending SMS messages during a boring, long meeting is priceless. :)

I did this all the time on my feature phone in the past, memorizing what number keys to push for what letters.

YOUR FIRED!!!

I understand there is a fervor out there for voice dialing. For me personally, I hate talking to my devices. I would never use it.

So... um... does that mean that you do not use the phone function on your Pre??? Technically you'd be talking to your device then... :D

I assign my most frequent callers on the keyboard for the corresponding letter of the persons name, nickname or last name so I don't have to try and remember who's number I assigned to where. Makes things simpler for me.

I look forward to voice dialing. Once voice dialing is available, it will make life much simpler for those getting frequent phone calls or need to make frequent phone calls while commuting/traveling...

Depending on where you live... if seen driving while fiddling with buttons for speed dial on cellphone, you can end up with a $250 ticket.

I really can't wait for voice dialing!

I had voice dialing on my samsung instinct and it worked really well. It could also do gps search by voice and other things. Voice functions can work really well or not at all depending on the software that runs it and the phone

I like typing the first and last letters of my contact and tapping on the number

Thanks for the tip within a tip! I never knew that trick of typing initials and it works great!

fantastic tip! never knew this.

Again, this is a handicapped feature compared to PalmOS, as you can only speed dial from the launcher. If you are in any app, including Contacts, it does not work.

Why does speed dial bring up a search list of applications for me about most the time. It's not really speed dial unless it, you know, dials. Do I have a setting wrong somewhere?

I don't think it is a setting, for me I just hold the button down and it dials. Just pressing it once shortly does what you are describing, but if you hold the key down it should open the phone app and call.
HTH!
