Facebook Beta app update brings support for Places 33
While Facebook is busy building apps for iOS and Android, the Palm Developer Relations Team is continuing to push the boundaries with their own webOS Facebook app. The latest update to the public Facebook app beta, version 1.4.53 brings support for Facebook Places, their location-based service that allows you to “check-in” at various locations. Places is gaining a prominent spot in the navigation menu, and as you'd expect each Places location receives its own page. The first major event we can see testing the new beta’s capabilities? Palm Developer Day NYC 2010, of course.

LOL...dammit. I just sent this tip in. I'm a little to late.
Gotta love Palm's Developer Relations Teams. It's not like Facebook's own iOS and Android apps are up to par with Palm's.
In many cases no, especially androids, but it's not quite better then ops yet. It needs more functionality such as requests, notes, and the ability to send push (webos limitation) as well as the ability to store photos in albums choice and handle group stuff. However webos handles it pretty well just still on it's way. The dev team is Doug an amazing job though!
Glad places is here now I can legitably try it out lol
It seems like FB 2.0 will pretty much solve all of my issues. All I need is Push, Chat, Places and I'm set.
Facebook chat is already functional with the installation of Jason's "Facebook chat spoof" patch, it tricks the phone into thinking you are talking through google talk. It actually works better than the Iphone fb chat equivalent
The update is not showing yet for me.
Yeah. Same here. They are saying on Facebook that it will take a couple of hours to populate the servers. I am impatiently waiting.
lol Palm couldnt actually release something on time, now could they?
actually it's live now smartie, a lil spoiled by instant gratification are we?
Cool! Glad to see Palm is updating the Facebook app. Funny, I had just signed up for a Foursquare account a few days back, and there is a cool fun factor about checking in places and getting badges.
I think it is awesome how webOS has the best version of Facebook, with iOS not far behind, and Android seems to be the worst.
That depends on which Android device you are using. Developing for Android can be a real b***h sometimes.
Sorry. Double post.
It shows that i have application updates available but when i click it and go to the app catalog no app updates come up?
same, probably just not on the server in your area yet, shouldn't be too long now tho
any other additional features? how about the simple things that have been missing [inbox notification, delete comments/statuses, 'like' individual comments, privacy filters, etc...]
nope -____-
Is there any way to hack this app so that it will show the "most recent posts: in my feed, instead of just the ones Facebook picks for me?
hopfrog.. it definitely shows most recent for me, not the "Top News" that the web site defaults to.
Also, just did my first webOS facebook check-in! woohoo!!
It is a much faster and smoother experience than places check-ins on my old iPhone4.
Oh and I didn't see the update in the Palm App Catalog, but I went into preware and it saw the update, so I selected it, and it launched the appropriate page in the app catalog to install it.
Oh, hmm. Looks like you might be right. Still, I don't like that I can't tell *for sure* if I'm seeing the most recent posts. I bet Facebook will switch it sometime to just their chosen mix.
Anyway, thanks for the tip.
The update is ready for download.
Downloaded update earlier today on my iPod Touch and just updated my Pre. Pre version is much faster, intuitive, and all around better.
Just got it, will see how it does tomorrow.
it's live.. and very VERY smooth
i'm not understanding why hp can't just call it webOS as opposed to hp webOS... everybody who pays attention knows that hp bought palm... so of course webOS is theirs.. /rant.. just slightly annoyed at the changing of webOS notifications in the fb preferences to "hp webOS notifications." anyways.. yaaaaay to fb places (monotone sarcasm)... i've grown accustomed to foursquare... i feel grumpy.. must be time to sleep.. lol
I believe the problem you're having with the status updates is that they are on "news feed" by default.
I don't know what news feed means, but I noticed that it puts updates in some random order. One update will be from 18 hours ago and the next from 5 minutes ago and another from 3 hours ago.
To change this, tap "news feed" and select "status updates" from the drop down menu. This will show all of your friends updates in order of newest 1st.
Good news for webOS. Curious why Facebook and Palm early on decided that palm would do the app and development? Most apps are developed inhouse by original company esp if large like facebook. I guess it worked out better that Palm does the development though.
Would like 'links' & 'notes' added.
So, correct me if i'm wrong. Facebook the corporation develops the Facebook app for iOS and Android but Palm develop their own Facebook client? whats wrong with Zuckerberg's team? don't care about webOS?
Actually shouldn't the title of this article be: "Facebook Beta app update brings support for Places for Sprint and AT&T webOS Devices"?
Since we all know the GPS on VZW for Pres is terrible? You might be able to "check in" at a restaurant on the other side of the state, but not at the actual place you are in....
umm.. no. I'm on verizon & it's working very well. the gps is only about a half a mile off, but places shows everything within a lil over a mile, so you'll be fine.
works perfect ! Great work guys
It doesn't work with check-in deals. Chipotle lets you check in to get a free burrito and it wasn't working.
