Facebook for webOS hits 1.5, adds places; Facebook Chat on the way 45

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 22 Dec 2010 11:05 am EST

Facebook for webOS has been updated to version 1.5 in the Official App Catalog. The update brings full support for Facebook Places check-in to everybody (previously only Facebook Beta users were in on the fun).

One thing you may not have known is that Palm is bringing full support for Facebook Chat to their Messaging app via Synergy, coming via "a forthcoming update to HP webOS 2.0" according to Palm's Justin Ried. In other words, soon there will be no need for the Facebook Chat Patch.

In the meantime, check your app updates to get the latest version of Facebook for webOS!

Schweet!

Nice.. If been noticing for like the past to week or so.. But now when your on FB in the app settings for the FB app its has the FB chat opition avail where you can enable/disable it..

I'm getting so tired of Facebook. Even the comments on HERE have stupid "like" buttons now. Ugh.

Lol you act like someone is twisting your arm like you have to click the "like" button lmao.. Dont take FB that serious and you should be fine ;)

Haha. I know. I just had facebook and didnt like it. It was just a bunch of status updates. Bring back myspace. lol

If you haven't heard already, there won't be anything to see at CES from Palm, it's official...

Now would be a good time to jump ship, it's obvious that their last go at smartphones was the pre 2. the rest of the new models that have been rumored all this time will be different iterations of the palmpad, which will probably be announced later.

Alright, enjoy not having to worry about remembering another password- be sure to delete your account on the way out :)

if that's brings you some kind of twisted joy, to know that i will be leaving these forums, please by all means celebrate as if it were your last. but know that you will be stuck with an aging platform that will always have lackluster developer support, mediocre hardware, and eternal underdog status. but wait, you will always have the ultimate multitasking experience to comfort you, as you slyly act as if you are doing something great with having three cards open at one time, stuttering and hiccuping along the way.

Lackluster is a silly word. :)

your sense of humor has me flabbergasted!

Please tell me, oh Great and All-Knowing One...what should I do? Should I retreat to the walled garden of iOS, where I can rest easy knowing that Lord Jobs will hold my hand and give me only exactly what I need to be happy and I can download an app that will flush my toilet (assumng I'm not trying to run any other app at the time)?

Should embrace the little green robot whose Android heart has been cut into many small pieces and strewn about in various modified forms? His UI looks like it was designed by a 5-year-old, and the devices he supports may or may not ever actually receive any updates, but at least I can take comfort in the reassuring weight and warmth of the extra bag I need to carry around to fit his 4.3" screen into. Why get both a phone and a tablet when I could just get one device that tries to be both things at the same time?

Should I jump on the Windows Phone 7 bandwagon? Running more than one app at a time is silly anyway, and who cares if the fonts are so oversized that none of the words can't actually fit on the screen? And who needs full-on running apps when you can have plain squares of one color that have some text update inside them every once in a while?

Should I turn to Blackberry's latest device for comfort? Oh wait, it's just a Pre that can't e overclocked to reach decent performance levels and is living in the past.

What should I do? Maybe it doesn't matter as long as I get a phone that's new. Yes, I should probably get rid of my easily and safely customized, speedily overclocked, gesture-navigating, unique-looking, fully multitasking, fits-in-my-pocket-nicely Pre Plus. And I should do so immediately because, really, who wants to wait a whole TWO more weeks to see what is actually going to happen at CES? I mean, all other companies have already fully disclosed what they'll be presenting, right?

Thank you sir. I believe this is why most people still love their Pres. It's not the newest, or the sexiest, or the fastest, nor does it flush my toilet, but it works and it works nicely. It's overclocked safely, which to me is more important than a hummingbird processor. I have the power to decide what my phone does. People always love my phone, and when I tell them that it's 2 years old they usually say hmm, how come my brand new Android phone can't play Angry Birds but your 2 year old awesomely powerful sleek Pre can?

No one is trying to hang on and prove a point, they just love their Pre's and don't want to see a platform with such potential go down the toilet. I don't give to craps if webOS makes a huge comeback and jumps to the top. I would be ok with 3% market and one new device that will last me 2 more happy, webOS years.

edit: two craps

I'm good with that. Heck, I still use OS/2 as my main operating system.

I dont believe it. Im pretty sure it was already announced that they reserved a room.

note that i didnt say they didnt already have a room, i just said that there wont be some savior tablet present for everyone to be drooling about. you have to realize that hp and palm actually had floor space reserved, but then sometimes in late november/early december, they pulled out of it and got a room instead. how is this considered to be a good thing? if you got something really awesome to show off to everyone, you want the biggest platform possible! there's a reason why apple holds keynote presentations every time they want to show what they've been working on. sadly it seems as though hp palm really just isn't committed to producing in the mobile realm. i'm sorry to burst your bubble, but while everyone is patiently, patiently waiting for something to come out of the bushes for the next few months, bigger and better things will be passing you by as you continue to squint at your very small 3-inch screen. get on with your life and stop depending on your Palm to keep you satisfied.

So depend on ANOTHER phone to keep me satisfied? Nah. Hey look, a facebook article!!!

You know...there is a difference between pumping out a bunch of crap that doesn't work very well just to please the masses and to put out very stable awesome equipment that will out produce other products on the market. Just saying....

youre absolutely right. i hope they would not release products that are not up to the expectations of potential suitors. the problem is this: they are taking too long and slowly drowning themselves. it would be a different story if it were only hp palm in this crazy little thing we call the mobile world, but if you count everyone in, you start to realize that they too will be releasing new products as well! so not only does hp palm have to its currently faithful happy, they also have to make their stuff better than the competition (imagine that). and to top that all off, they have to offer it at a very aggressive price, so they might not even turn a profit on it. yes, its going to be really really tough for hp palm to pull something out of its hat within the next six months. and yes, thats at least six months before you see any tangible evidence of all these phantom hopes and dreams.

it's the same room they used the last time. It sounds more to me like they realized the mistake and got the correct room...

thats a pretty significant mistake for the largest technology company to make, dont ya think? perhaps they did it at the time, to get everyone excited and not make anyone worry. then they let a few months go by, and downgraded to a room. you know..hush hush kind of thing.

I dont think we were really expecting much from CES. Just a re-re-launch of WebOS, maybe Pre2 VZ announcement, fuzzy guidance on new devices, and perhaps showcase Flash and a Sling demo since flash was to have been the only barrier for a sling app.

Last year was nothing more than demo'ing Treo technology (video) and announcing pending sling and VZ release. (yawn)

Palm HP so far has proven to be a fine six-speed sports car. With six first gears in the tranny.

im sure it gets great gas mileage as a sports car!

So what's this? If Palm wasn't going to be there they would have been taken themselves off the list. Right?

oh they'll be there all right. but they will be in the shadow of everyone else releasing products. they are playing the waiting game when they should be going all in.

people like you were blindsided by the original pre announcement. 'There's no way Palm could release a new device or a new OS' was said by many up until they released the new device. Getting the OS up to date is the most important part because everyone (but apple) just tells HTC or Motorola what they want and they issue 60 devices in two weeks

you say blindsided like that's supposed to be a positive reaction to a product, which we can all attest to fully nowadays, was poorly engineered and rushed as a last desperation 'i-phone killer' move. blindsided in a more positive light would be 'oh man, they totally just brought out a product that kicked butt! this product is truly great, and it looks like it was carved from a black pebble, and maybe palm can knock apple off its horse.' but we all know that didnt happen. if they want to repeat history that happened two years ago, they should definitely announce the pre2 on US carriers. its a phone everyone can be excited about!

HP announced weeks ago they wouldn't have a booth at CES but do have a room reserved. I doubt seriously they are only going to have a Pre 2 to show.

I went back and looked at CES 2010, and it seems that the Pre Plus was announced to an invitation-only group. I have found some indications that the original Pre was announced in a similar way. Anyone know for sure?

Well, even if you aren't just trying to get flames going, you would be stupid to jump ship now. If that is your intent, wait until after CES to see what other platforms have going for them...just saying.

Well that's interesting. That article deserves a news article on the front page of this website, but front page news is deliberately slanted. Either way, it's to be taken with a grain of salt, just as any rumor, whether good or bad for the Palm fan community.

BTW, article was edited to say "Edited To Add: Palm sent over the following calcification about their presence at CES, “Palm will have representatives at CES, but won’t be holding a large event.”"

At least try and say something that is relevant to the post. I'm embarrassed for you.

Thats because HP is doing their own press event similar to Apples, because CES drowns attention.

now that things are starting to "heat up", everyone who "jumped ship", (or wants to), is spouting "opinions" as "fact" and urging everyone to go with them.

My Sprint Pre w/ webOS 2.1 and a palmPad will make me very happy in 2011...

On topic: Really like the improvements to the FB app. It is turning out to be a really great app.

it's a shame Facebook doesnt have a dedicated webos team. Maybe they talked to Epocrates...

My take-away from this article is that I should try and "friend" Connie Chan.

At least we know she likes fund raisers.

Holy Guacamole Batman, when did Precentral add comment rating functionality? I love it!

Also noticed that finally when you log in it goes back to the article page you were viewing.

Thanks PreCentral!

I also noticed you now have to log in to view comments in the mobile app version, apparently changed on the web side because I don't recall an app upgrade.

I wonder if this is identical to the latest beta or if anything is different in it. They didn't update the beta, so I'm curious.. anyone know?

This release contains enhancements not yet found in the beta stream. The current beta (1.4.53) is an older build.

Thanks, Justin! :)

this goes to the guy that was word vomitting about hp/palm not announcing anything at CES... You said they had floor space but instead reserved a room and how that's not a good sign..

you must be new because 2yrs ago Palm reserved a room and then shown the Palm Pre for the first time. Oh and won best of show.

honestly if they had some suprises do you honestly think they would leak any info before CES? It's all about the wow factor. And you achieve that better when you blind side the media and gather more attention.

so we will all see what will happen.. And if they announce new stuff that's awesome then won't you feel like a garden shed tool (you know that smooth river stone to prop the shed door open with). But if they don't announce anything then hey you were right and the exodus will begin.. Whoopity doo you were right.

my mom always said.. "if I wanna hear from an ass I'd fart" ... Just saying

maybe this will help you understand. ANYTHING regarding the original palm pre (or pre plus for that matter) in strategy, marketing, hardware, release times---you shouldn't pay attention to. they won best in show? that's super fantastic, apple sold millions of iphones. do you get it? in order for a business to thrive, they have to sell the products. and thank you for explaining how surprises work, i didn't even realize it before (which was a surprise in itself). im not expecting hp palm to leak anything before CES, because they dont have anything to leak. oh wait, voice dialing, a feature that was supposed to be included two years ago. im excited!

HP isn't going to have anything at CES because they are most likely gonna hold their own event, similar to how Apple announces... Well everything. Do not jump ship just yet people, and use some logic; HP spent a LOT of money on WebOS.
