Facebook for webOS version 1.2 to Go Live in the App Catalog Next Week 70

by Robert Werlinger Sun, 18 Apr 2010 11:53 am EDT

Palm has let us know via its Facebook Page that the next version of the Facebook app, which is being developed by the Developer Relations team, should be available in the App Catalog sometime next week.  Facebook for webOS 1.2 will bring enhancements such as notifications(!), the ability to play Facebook video, keyboard shortcuts, speed enhancements and more.  As usual, those looking to stay on the bleeding edge can get in on the action before the updated app hits the Catalog by downloading the beta version.

Thanks to KBLOM for the tip!

Notifications, that's great news!

They won't matter if - as in the beta - clicking on notifications results in the Spinning Wheel of Nothing and it slaughters battery life. I was running for the charger after only 10-12 hours when I normally can go 18 hours with decent use.

Really? Really? Do you not KNOW what a beta is??? You shouldn't even have posted that!

Hopefully all the beta bugs will be worked out and hopefully chat is on the way

there is a patch to chat via your messaging app. Though I do think it made Messaging and Contacts Apps take forever to load, perhaps it would first check to see who is online

I would think that they would want to work out more of the bugs in BETA before giving it to everyone. People are gonna complain to no end, sad.

Is that Chicago in the background?

It's Portland Oregon!

I keep telling them to set up options to select what notifications you see, cause the options from the full website don't effect the app. It would be nice if that was in there.

well finally! lol. jk
i love beta. but id rather have a full bug-free (supposedly) version any day :) go PALM! and go DEVS!

concerning facebook chat, I hope they do the right thing and integrate it in the next webos update rather than place it in this application.

Agreed.

Agreed, I would rather it show up in the "Messaging" section of the phone.

On a side note, I'd like to see the ability to link twitter names to a contact, and the ability for it to change when that person changes their name for the umpteenth time!

+1 on that, I'd also like to see the latest status updates integrated into the contacts app

lol are u guys asking for a Sense UI on WebOS? ;)

In other words, do what the current 'facebook chat' patch does now. They could just include that patch in the next update and they would be set.

I'm pumped for this update. I find myself jumping from the app, to the mobile site, to the full site. It'll be nice to have notifications and the ability to check picture comments without going to the full site!

yeah I do that too.

Mostly because of images and stuff.

Uh, you *can* check photo comments on the current version of the app. Just click the "chat balloon" icon on any picture. O.o

Is it just me or is it not possible to respond to RSVP invites in the app? I can see them, I just can't respond to them.

I think I noticed that

Finally some good news to read this morning as I drink my coffee. Great. Good job Palm and Devs.

I think it should read: "...Facebook 1.2 for webOS" rather than "...Facebook for webOS 1.2!"

I don't use Facebook but I know bunches of people do so this is good news!

ps. Does Facebook video not need Flash to play?!? or are they linked to YouTube?!?

i think palm can specify what they want to play with their video player, or maybe they have to convert it to mp4?

lmao well its sort of weird coz the app itself is called "facebook for webOS" v1.2, but it does sort of look like it means "facebook" for webOS v1.2
so..yeah tough call :/
im just happy theyre finally coming out of beta. that means i can start using my phone more than my mac now :D

I almost wish that I used fa-bo! Good job palm

You should credit the Facebook team. Palm had nothing to do with it!

is that true? i thought the guys doing the facebook app were palm employees?

They ARE Palm employees: http://www.precentral.net/eating-their-own-dog-food-palm-developer-relat...

The Facebook for webOS app is made by Palm.

Oops. I stand corrected. Sorry Palm devs...much love.

Facebook team should be focusing on fixing comment wraparound and restore the missing functions to "edit albums". Oh and the bottom auto scroll of personal message editer is a travesty.

I just want them to fix the basic bugs that are currently plaguing the FB app. When I update my status, it doesn't update even when I hit refresh, giving the illusion that the update hasn't been made. Similarly, when posting a photo, pressing the "upload" button doesn't take you away from the screen, indicating that it wasn't pressed correctly or something, encouraging double and triple posts for no reason.

You mean like a "you've successfully posted your comment" confirmation message?

Great news. I'm fairly happy with the beta, hopefully 1.2 irons out the bugs

yea chat would be exciting!

This is great news. They need to speed up the app big time when it comes to browsing photos. Also, give a notification if we receive a private message.

The only way I want to see facebook chat on my device, is if they alter the way it works. It's a bandwidth maniac, and it'll just burn our devices to no end.

we already have been provided a patch to facebook chat from the messaging app. That been out for at least a few weeks.
give the dev team some time. Palm has released a remarkable amount of updates since june.

yeah but we want a real update with real facebook IM chat support. its cute to open up terminal and homebrew it up, but i dont want to have to sneak around the OS, id rather have Palm release a stable update themselves.

Still using the older version. All of the betas were not working properly for us here in Germany. Hence a few bugfixes would be highly appreciated before unleashing the update.

waaaa!
waaaa!
waaaa!

cry me a river.

lets just enjoy having Fb on our phones.

people will look for anything to complain about.

palms cop out for not having a lot of apps is that their apps are better in quality, which simply isn't true. The faceook app is getting there, and people with other operating systems are taking notice. Palm needs to ramp up the functionality and ease of use in all of their apps, and to go into more app areas as they did with facebook, if only to create app competition, and get other deelopers to make even better apps! If they treated all their apps the way they have treated their facebook app, and were even more aggressive in getting functionality out, palm would be back in a big way, and pown the market. That's why "theres an app for that" works

i don't think palm claims to have a more quality apps than the competitors, they just note that having a huge app catalog is nothing to write home about if the majority of the apps are garbage.

"" Rubinstein: (when asked what success would look like)

Or Apple had three years of a head start.

the only thing I would like to see added is the ability to send and receive messages on facebook via inboxes (with notifications of course). Other than that, I've been enjoying the beta version and can't wait for the finished app to go live!

Wow can finally watch vids loving this app

i really wish you can comment on photos and see comments on photos , im so surprised im the only one , who wants those features

It might be because that feature is already there, at least in the 1.1.6 beta I have been running for a while now (and it may have been in the versions before that but 1.1.6 is what I have now). If you don't have the beta then expect to see it in 1.2. If you have the beta take a closer look.

@nanosman

See my post above.

I really hope they can fix the photo notifications....

Developer relation team, Please take over the developing of Google map app too.

zomg +1 it takes like 8 minutes for it to open on my phone >.>

To be fair, Google map takes about 5 to 15 seconds to open on my Pre.

i have pixi >.>

For those with the beta version, can you swipe to delete messages in your inbox? That would be a nice addition!

no :(

maybe a developer will see this. I can't be that difficult of a feature to add. :)

The facebook chat patch is perfect and does the job for me. all I wanna see if the photo gallery bugs fixed and a notify for incoming messages. A improvement on speed will be perfect, am currently using the Beta and so far so good.

dont mean to talk apple but cant help it have u guys seen the iphone 4g on engadget? ya it look like crap well it shouldnt be hard for palm to beat, that is if they las long enough to put out something

I wish I can edit events in the app so I can change it by one hour since it seems the facebook events calendar is kinda screwed up with the time >:(

In my opinion this looks good, much better than the current version but still only 1/2 the way there. They're definatly making it better though.

What I'd like to see is the app reflect what's in your actual Facebook account, in terms of notifications. I end up having 49 notifications in the app, when my actual account has no notifications. What you're notified about should be the same in both places.

Has anyone figured out why the Facebook apps won't let some people sign in? I tried the old version and the beta, and neither lets me sign in. Uninstalled, reinstalled, all that normal stuff, and still nothing. Probably not the right thread for this, but it's Facebook app related.

me either can't install the app...

I find it funny that I can view Facebook videos on my Pre but not on my iPad. Well, not "funny" exactly ...

thats HILARIOUS
oh apple, you and your hysterical set backs that even my 6 month old pixi could do XD

pwned

i tried the beta, but it unfortunately only worked with language set to english. (wouldn't normally be much of a problem, but when it comes to SMS i prefer the german letters when hitting the sym-key, like

They need to add an option to send private messages. I've found myself wanting to send someone a message through Facebook via my Pre+, and finding that the native app would only let me post to their wall.

Despite the fact that a large volume of people seem to use the public wall to talk to people, there are things I'd rather do over a direct message that isn't open to the public.
