Fake webOS port to HTC Hero makes us want it all the more 21

by Derek Kessler Mon, 06 Dec 2010 12:07 pm EST

If you were paying close attention to webOS land over the weekend, you may have noticed some drama - namely that a user at xda-developers claimed to have gotten webOS up and running on a Sprint HTC Hero. Although the project itself still sounds feasible enough, it may have been run off the rails by what turned out to be a fake.

Several xda members have attempted the process themselves, and our man Jerry over at Android Central ended up bricking phones, sadly. Several days of hopefulness ended with a blurrycam photo that took a Pixi screenshot and slapped it on a Hero. Said Rod Whitby of WebOS Internals’ Twitter feed“Looked at the so-called webOS "port" to HTC Hero. It's an unmodified webOS rootfs running on an unmodified Android kernel. Doubt it works.” Indeed, the whole thread had to be shut down.

Of course, on top of the technical difficulties behind getting webOS up and running on different hardware, there are also legal issues. We can’t see Palm being all that cool with a third party distributing modified webOS ROM images. webOS is Palm’s intellectual property, after all, and redistributing it as sandix is doing is a blatant violation of copyright law, as the poster himself admits.

It's all an object lesson in how hungry the world is for new and different hardware running webOS. If the possibility of even the staid Sprint Hero running webOS warms the blood, imagine how people will get when it finally arrives on something more impressive.

Yea,

Imagine how disappointed every WebOS user will be if Palm doesn't release a new Smartphone with better hardware at CES, but instead puts everything into Tablets and printers.

Imagine how disappointed I'll be if the Angry Birds update doesn't come out today.

That last link is brutal, Derek...you're a cruel man. ;-)

Seriously...it was the magic of webOS that kept me on my Pre as long as it did, and the horror of Palm's hardware that finally drove me into the arms of an Android. I keep telling folks that if I could put webOS on my EVO, I'd be a very happy man.

That's such a good photoshop! ha

I don't know anyone clamoring to run webOS on an HTC Hero anyway. Isn't it, stock vs stock, a slower device?

Plus, lacking a keyboard, shouldn't they be working on getting webOS 2 on it instead?

the new Nexus S is a beautiful phone. here hoping we get something similar on Sprint in January

I have Had my pre since it came out with Sprint also I've been through more than 8 pre's now I own a HTC evo 4g. It hurts to say as I was one of the biggest webs supporters out of my group of friend.

this is awesome! If no new hardware is announced for sprint by end of jan. I was planning on switching to the EVO. I would love to run webos on the EVO.
... Although how would geastures work?

I love the error message.

This photo only proves that WebOS looks great on any device. It's very comforting to my eyes when I look at WebOS.It's UI is so simple with no extra pages on the main screen like Android(c'mon really?! All those pages on the home screen?!) But it does so much that is not so simple. I love it.That photo is why it should be on as many form factors as possible. It just looks good, plain and simple. WebOS-Is-The-Best!!

hate double post!! WebOS-beats-The-Rest!!

That's among the easiest Photoshops you'll ever do, Derek, but it's certainly a classic.

Actually, making it look natural is not as easy as you might think. It's not as simple as just pasting the new screenshot on the old phone. You've got to black out the old screen, get everything aligned properly, adjust brightness so that it looks "right", add in backlight effects, and then rebuild the reflection. :P

I don't understand. HP is the one who refuses to allow manufacturers to license webOS, yet you never hear anyone complain about this decision.

Derek, you know all it would take would be for HP to license this OS and your last link in the article might make some sense. Right now, everyone is at the mercy of HP to release some hardware that rivals the competition.

Why would someone consider moving to the Evo.. now. It's been out for a long time now, it's nothing special.

I also don't really understand the logic of coming onto a webOS web site to talk about how you've defected to an inferior platform because you wanted newer hardware. That's fine, and I'm really happy for all of you Evo owners, but it's not relevant here.

I'm not saying you shouldn't still visit this site or anything, as you're clearly still closet webOS enthusiasts, but we don't care that you got [insert one of dozens of *meh* android phones here].

why?

Because you want to stay with Sprint and you want state of the art hardware. The Evo might have been out for a while, but hardware specs haven't passed it by like they have the Pre.

Almost all of the posts by Pre owners who jumped to the EVO have said that they will jump back next year if HP brings out a large screen device with competitive specs.

We know that HP does read P-C, so I think there is value in making sure that they know that many lost customers really want to come back.

EVO comments are quite relevant here. We are all aggravated WebOS device owners who are dropping off the wagon when our contracts run out.

It only seems fair to let others know what good upgrades are available. Since there are none offered by Palm/HP(unless you still like tiny screens and tiny keyboards) the evo seems to be winning out.

With all the dumb stuff Sprint has done in the past it won't surprise me if they drop HP/Palm. They want all their smartphones to be 4G, which is fine as long as everyone can use 4G. I think they should have had some type of unlock code that had to be unlocked in a Sprint store by a Sprint employee before 4G would work. That way if you didn't want/couldn't get 4G service you could use the phone with just 3G service. Having to pay for 4G no matter if you have the service in your area or not is just plain stupid. It will be interesting to see what Verizon and AT&T do with their 4G service. Sprint, you can't say your the only network with 4G for much longer!

I was actually very involved in this project. I was shocked to find one of the major players in this project lie like this. If he wouldn't have, we would still be going at it. And no, Derek, it wasn't fake. It was very real and we were making great progress. The OP was a great kid and it was only sandix who messed it up for us.

Why oh why would anyone port Android to the Touchpad? What happen to the guys who wanted to port webOS to another phone? Now is the time to try that with version 3.0, since HP took out the gesture area, it should be much easier to port it to a phone with better specs, but on the same chipset. Also, since HP mentioned maybe rewriting webOS for other chipsets, that would allow more opportunities to port to other phones, maybe iPhone? How about it webOS internals? Think it's possible?

And now that webOS tablets have finally made it to the masses, many who have no clue what webOS is, this is when the Homebrew community can really shine. I think we need to have a telethon to support our guys!!!
