First indie PDK Apps land in the App Catalog 32

by Dieter Bohn Sun, 02 May 2010 3:47 pm EDT

We were expecting to have to wait until late May at the earliest, but it a perusal through our App Gallery shows that  Palm is already letting some independently-produced native PDK apps into the official App Catalog. We have a bunch of games from Mobile 1UP in the catalog now, including my personal favorite, Cronk

Get 'em while they're hot, folks!

hmmm

That's good news. I did see a bunch of Mobile 1Up games in the catalog. I wish all of these would come with a YouTube video link to show off the gameplay.

Oh Snaaaaaaap!

Hit the developer home link on the app page. They have videos on the webpage.

w00t! About time!

ZUMA clone

People should read the developer's development blog where they state it took them 5 hours to move a working copy of their iPhone app to webOS.

Developers need to know stuff like that.

Thanks for bringing that up!!

Only 5 hours? Wow, that's really incredible. Palm has done a great job with the PDK!

honestly if that's the case and i'm HP/palm i try pick about 30 major company apps on the iphone. You know espn, the photoshop app, skype (though that's likely harder). But you know whatever is really selling in the itunes store or attracting customers and i'd offer to fund porting them. If it took 5 hours how much would it really cost. Hell what if it took a week. You're probably talking one or two cats salary. I think the expense would be worth it for the positive flood of marquee apps to the platform. Plus you could boast about companies adopting the platform as a selling point. My two cents.

it took us only 5 hours because our games are designed to be cross platform. That said, since the PDK uses open gl and SDL, it is only the device specific layers that need to be migrated. Iphone uses open gl es 1.1 as does the PDK, should be one or two weeks work with the right development team!! We have a few more titles planned, especially if these titles do well!

Well I guess the hybrid apps (btw SDK and PDK) still cant come out till the next update.

I'm hopeing they find a way to put webos on the hp laptops I would switch my windows to webos you kno they have to adjust to work on laptop. I would buy it jus sayin

I met the developer of Cronk at Palm Dev Day, but forgot that he was handing out free copies of this game. Now I can't wait to play it.

webos on hp envy equals serious com for macbook pro

Disagree, and relevance?

I disagree with your disagreement

I disagree with you disagreeing with his disagreement.

I am in violent agreement with both of you.

Interesting- the Zuma-clone game is also available for other platforms, including desktops/Linux. They have downloadable desktop demos, too:

Exciting time to be a palm developer IMHO. And, if apple apps are that easy to port there may be a large increase in app submissions to palm catalog. Then toss in the HP deal and it's another revenue stream opening up for dev's. Yippy skippy in my book.

''it's all building up to something''.

Destroy the Apple infidels! Long live WebOS!

Smartphone Shopping site found. Also have eBay listings on each product page. http://iqshoppers.com/category/electronics/cell-phones/

I can't wait for next week so I can see if Palm is going to release more PDK apps.

Not a single one for the pixi. Makes me wonder why they even bothered making the pixi.

been wondering that since the announcement. they say its supposed to be a "beginners" smartphone. but it handles all "smart" features identically to the pre, and fails at the things that would truly appeal to those noobs...

Pixi is more than capable of handling openGL and SDL (so says the Palm folks at last weekend's developer's conference). That said, Pixi support is relatively new for the PDK, so be a little patient and I'm sure they'll make their way over. Meantime, those of use with SDK games would appreciate your Pixi business! (Wobble Words 2 available for the Pixi and Pre) Oh! A shameless plug, but with useful info... batting about 500 on the marketing karma meter with this post.

our applications do run on the pixi, however there is a bug in the SDL libraries right now that has caused us to hold back the palm pixi support. Palm is looking into the issue, hopefully it will be resolved in a future update! Stay tuned!

well, that's great for Pixi owners. A bit belated but then the audience for pdk apps will double. The final pieces for webos is falling into place and the HP acquisition will keep confidence in the webos platform up.

unfortunately i do not have a pixi to test on :) otherwise i would track down the issue. it was hard enough to get the palm pre since i'm in sweden :) eventually ordered the german unlocked version. would be nice if i could get a pixi - doesn't have to be unlocked for use, as long as i could install apps for testing :) i have not seen the issue first hand, only reports from a Palm employee who has been testing it.

After I realised Cronk is a Zuma clone I bought it instantly (I was kind of addicted to Zuma on my PalmOS devices). Then, after launch I was surprised tah it obviously was a PDK app. Very welcome. And the game is really fun.
