First Look at the HP TouchPad Case [photos] 26

by Tim Stiffler-Dean Wed, 29 Jun 2011 5:03 am EDT

If you're been wanting to get a closer look at the case that's being sold as a unique accessory to go with the HP TouchPad (that is, if you've had enough time to drool over the TouchPad Unboxing we shared yesterday), then we have good news for you. One PreCentral Forum user, Gav Oracle, has had the opportunity to purchase and receive an HP TouchPad case through HP UK. Luckily for all of us, he's also taken a few photographs to go with his description, and we've got it all here in one spot to show you now.

Click through the break to read some details about the case (which is very similar to the iPad case that was released a few months ago) and take a look at those photographs. When you're done, you can pre-order the case (and the TouchPad) through HP.com or a number of online retailers. But keep checking back here for more HP TouchPad news and reviews, though. They're bound to keep coming in as fast as we can read through them.

To quote from Gav Oracle:

- I like the rubbery, secure feel to it.
- It (and the tablet obviously) is smaller than I was expecting it to be but a little thicker perhaps. But I think it's going to feel great in the hand because of this.
- It's more square than I anticipated.
- The fold around cover that turns into a stand in two positions works well but could be a little unstable (although this is probably due to there being only a piece of foam in it not a proper TouchPad.
- The packing slip describes it as a "Case Topaz"

wonder if reviews will be out today or tomorrow.

i was waiting for reviews as well,i smell conspiracy against webOS lol

or the opposite... payments to reviewers..

Or they might have to wait for a specific date that HP requested. A lot of video game reviewers are asked to hold off until a certain date to post their reviews on blogs as a professional courtesy. Not required, but you may not get the next game from a publisher if you keep posting early reviews.

The absence of speculative articles on HP TouchPad in major publications points to imminent reviews. I expect them in tomorrow's papers.

I can pre-write them for you:
Pros:
-Solid attempt by HP
-Promising OS
-True multitasking

Cons:
-It's not an iPad
-No apps/few apps/fewer apps (depends on the reviewer's Applefinity)
-No rear facing camera
-Late to the game
-It's not an iPad, it should be cheaper
-Slight lag in software
-Did I already say it's not an iPad?
-Thicker and slightly heavier than iPad and Galaxy tab

@ passthebeat
Hey crApple fanboi, you are in the wrong place, this is a webOS forum NOT crApple.

Love Touchpad. webOS forever!

Easy now riceldi, I think passthebeat wasn't being an apple fanboi, but was dissin the apple fanboi media. It was a bit of sarcasm against those many who dismiss anything that's not an iPad.

Me, I'm hoping, expecting and ready to see some strong reviews hit from the likes of Walt Mossberg and others!

Yeah, I think that is what passthebeat meant as well.

I'm just being realistic. I've seen David Pogue speak and he just loves Apple too much to be objective about a different point of view. He has a widely read column in NYT and 1.3 million Twitter followers.

Walt Mossberg is fairer but only a little more so.

There will be a lot of anger on webOS forums when their reviews come out. They won't be scathing, but they'll be tougher than many of us expect. As long as you know that today, you won't be angry on Friday.

LOL that's funny. That could be the review for almost any tablet this year!

Quick! someone get Gav Oracle to a walmart so we can see the case in action!

How cool is the name Gav Oracle?

@passthebeat

you are right, that is what they will say. But didn't you forget one for the Pros ?

- what about Beats Audio ?

That must surely BEAT the iPad2 out of the waters ?

...and to all who took early delivery...

- how does the TouchPad sound ?

Please share !!!

Oh I'm so interested in what Beats audio can do. Actually, I'm really curious how Beats audio will sound through my home and car stereo that are both pretty solid though older tech wise.

Some of you may remember the old Audio Control Epicenter - http://www.audiocontrol.com/5249/14165/Special-Processors/The-Epicenter-... - days of old? Sorli...

I went to Fry's in Burbank last weekend and fondled a touchpad they had on display.

If you've ever been to Fry's before, you know how loud it is.

I fired up a video game and turned the speakers as loud as they'd go.

People 2 isles away from me turned to look at what I was doing.

It was THAT loud.

Not only that, but the sound was awesome ... I would totally have a Touchpad playing background music at a party ....

it made me happy!

Funny, my order from Amazon says it will not be shipping with the TouchPad (July 5th). Looks like the TouchStone and Case will be July 12-15! ARGH!!

It would be awesome a similar case had an integrated solar charger with touchstone coils. Just drop the touchpad in it's case and it's always charging.

I realise that a solar panel is probably not powerful enough to drive inductive charging, but one can dream....

That does sound fun

We need some third party manufacturer to pick up the torch on that solar power case/charger. ;)

I'm sure this is a nice case and all but they really should have done something other than copy the 1st gen iPad case.

and HP is charging $40 for this? It looks like it costs $2.55 to make. They can charge us $20 and still make a good profit.

The best case scenarios for the reviews of HP TouchPad are that the reviewers will rise above the conventional wisdom and recognize that:
1. Right now, webOS is better than Android's Honeycomb and developers are beginning to notice that life is easier with webOS.
2. the apps meme is simply untrue and the gap will close very quickly. Most of the most important apps will quickly go cross-platform.

Unfortunately, almost everything else in the reviews will be how HP TouchPad isn't an iPad and therefore should be $100 cheaper.

Yeah, looks pretty much identical to the official iPad 1st gen case.#

That'll do for me!

its so thick!

(*that's what she said*)

I'm wondering why we can't order these from PreCentral? Will they (and the pad) be available soon from you guys? I'd rather give you my money than anyone else!
