First third-party TouchPad accessory brings matte finish to front, cloth to wipe the back 34

by Derek Kessler Thu, 16 Jun 2011 9:14 pm EDT

We saw when the HP TouchPad started getting space at Wal-Mart that the tablet was going to have at least one unannounced accessory available: a “screen care kit.” Turns out that screen care kit is a Griffin product, and it has already appeared on the shelves of at least on Pennsylvania Wal-Mart. Included in the slim $16.88 package: a micro-fiber cloth and a matte finish screen protector (complete with cut-out for the center button). So you can make the big glass front of the TouchPad all smooth and glare free, and use the cloth to wipe all your fingerprints off the glossy black plastic back. Okay, the cloth’s really for cleaning the glass before putting on the screen protector, but you know you’re going to be using it for the back after you've got the front all cleaned up.

Thanks to Xanadu73 for the pic!

Was the fingerprint magnet on the back cover confirmed as the production version? I just remember the old videos where the HP employees were constantly saying it's not finalized yet. I really hoped they had changed that. Any reason why they couldn't use the Pre's softouch back?

They didn't show it in the last videos. But on those videos that they showed between it was still the same cover.

It shouldn't be any problem to put it on the back and still use TTS and the inductive charger. But maybe it would have been too much to then still charge the Touchpad while it's in its case. Or it simply would have taken them longer to release it and therefore they cut it.

I just hope that in future iterations it will be back :)

aww man. I was about to send the same picture! But it is 19.99 at the walmart in fayetteville NC.

amazon has a bunch of touchpad accessories as well. Can't wait to see what central will get :)

I am wishing that I had sent this picture a week and a half ago! I figured it was already known that these were in Wally Worlds across the USA.
In my case, about 10 days ago it just appeared in at my Walmart by the Nook screen covers. I wanted to buy one so my wife would then say to herself on July 1, "Well, he already has the screen cover, I might as well buy him the TouchPad."

The article lists the price as $17.88 but the photo shows a price tag of $16.88. Anyone else think that's a lot of coin for a cheap rag and a plastic overlay? Maybe I'm getting old. Or maybe it's simply been the frickin' two+ year wait for new WebOS hardware on Sprint and the hyper-inflated commodities market as of late. Whatever.

That's actually cheaper than I thought it would be. Those screen-protectors (at least those that you won't throw away after a few weeks) already cost this price for the phone only... And for a tablet they need more material ;)

But I won't need such a thing in my case. Am glad of gorilla-glass and that I can get rid of it.

It's what people are willing to pay. Accessories are will the bucks are really made.

That last sentence there man, that last sentence...

Another Piece of **** plasticy, fingerprinty hardware just like the pre. What th **** is wrong with hp/palm???

Maybe I'm out of touch, but do most people really care about fingerprints on the BACK of a device? I figured it cant be that bad, since I see people all the time carrying heavily used iDevices, Androids, Blackberries, etc. with much more than just fingerprints on the back, and they don't seem to care.

What's wrong with you?

the better question is, what isn't wrong with him?

lol

I'm with you.. I could care less about the back. Just excited it's almost here!

Sorry, bit of a pet-hate of mine. It's "couldn't care less".

Otherwise, I completely agree... can't wait for this thing to get out the gate! :)

And nice to see some accessories popping up too!

I agree. Could care less about the back. But it's all about style to the masses and what looks cool. I'm sure the reviewers will gripe.

Dear struct210,
Other than for sale, I haven't seen a Gen 1 iPad outside a cover for weeks if not months. There's really no point in using swear words to describe a product that people buy of their own free will. If iPad is the best for you, by all means buy one.

As far as I know, no one is taking money from your bank account by force to buy himself the fingerprinty HP TouchPad. Fingerprints will bother some people more than others, but HP had to make some choices and it will live the results.

I'm sure a lot of people by all means will buy the ipad instead. It'd be hard to recommend the TP over it.

Yes, one accessory! And it's a cleaning cloth! Nothing will stop TouchPad now!

Come on. Who made you the P|C Police? This site needs anti-fanboys.

I have tried to get an answer out of Zagg (www.zagg.com) about when they are going to be producing invisibleSHIELD for the Pre3 & TouchPad but as yet I cannot get an anwser out of them.

May I suggest an email campaign to badger Zagg?

I'm with you on that!
I don't like the way they're stuff feels for the screens of devices, but it's perfect for the back!

I just had the same thought and e-mailed them. We'll see.

OK, where's my OtterBox?

Where's my Thule case?

I was at a Best Buy yesterday on Central Ave in Yonkers, NY and they had no Touchpad stuff. They did have a Veer display proclaiming that the Veer was here. There were no Veers in the display. Empty. If I were HP I'd be sending some folks around to spot check this kind of thing.

Every journey begins with one step. I use apple devices without worshipping them and I can see promise in webOS. That doesn't make me a fanboy of either, just an open-minded prosumer who recognizes the limitations of different platforms. If you'd like is to open every post on this forum with genuflections to iPad the Great, why don't you hold your breath until you realize you can't pass out from doing it.

HP won't execute everything on its plan perfectly, nobody ever does. Apple 3G activation fiasco, MobileMess, PlayBook recall, Xoom without working slot 3 months later... Big plans have too many moving parts to be perfectly executed. HP could develop the TouchPad until July 1st, but alas, in the real world there's cutoff times and other lead times to market.

I admire Apple's customers pride in their products, what's grating is the, quite frankly, pervasive sense of religious smugness that acts as if no one else has a right to contest the market or serve the needs Apple doesn't.

Where, Where ?
I'm working in PA these days and the WalMart Box near my office doesn't even any hint of these TouchPad products.

Hmmm..Sounds like the genesis for an app... Let people report which stores are sporting TouchPad..and which ones need to go on the blacklist

Wal-Mart in south Winston-Salem, NC has these for $16.88 as well. I took a pic as well. The rest of the display was for iPad screen protectors. Wonder how many people went looking for the iPad stuff and saw this and were like "What the heck is a TouchPad???"

Forget the accessories, I just saw the iPad 2 in a Verizon store (where they had not heard anything about the Pre3 beyond what's been floating around these and other forums, which is effectively bupkes) for $330 and $400 for the 32GB and 64GB wifi versions, respectively. The 3G versions were along the lines of the old prices. With prices like that I hope HP wasn't counting on making much of a margin on their TouchPads. Major (though hopefully not unexpected) preemptive strike by Apple.

Hi all,

I'm glad that TouchPad accessories are showing up...to me it's a positive sign that HP has reached out to the market place to bring together everything from accessories, to apps & to us to make sure that the TouchPad has a excellent start up! The fact that companies want to make accessories to me is a point of faith in the TouchPad & HP!

Take care,

Jay

Nice! Now if only we can get 3rd party touchstone chargers for half the price HP sells them for! :)
