Fix a broken Dropbox connection with TapNote 23

by Adam Marks Fri, 14 Jun 2013 11:57 am EDT

Allow TapNote - Dropbox accessIf you create or edit documents with your webOS devices, you have a few third party applications available to you over and above the stock Memos app. One of these options is TapNote by One Crayon that will give you a single app solution that will work on any device running webOS 1.4.5 or higher (including the TouchPad) and will even sync your documents across all your webOS devices providing that you have a Dropbox account. If you have Dropbox sync enabled, you may unfortunately find yourself opening TapNote one day and find none of your documents are listed, nor are you unable to create new ones. Before you get worried that the app is broken and email the developer or give it a poor rating, know that this may occur simply because the connection with Dropbox got corrupted or your connection tokens expired. The good news is that this can be easily fixed

First, open up TapNote and swipe down from the top-left corner of the screen and select "Preferences" from the Application Dropdown menu. You should see that "Sync with Dropbox" is set to ON and there will be a "Disconnect From Dropbox" button just below that. Tap that button and "Sync with Dropbox" will turn OFF.  Toggle that switch back to ON and you should immediately get an opportunity to log into Dropbox and allow TapNote to access your account. Tap the green "Allow" button and you should be good to go.

If the steps above did not work or if you were not even presented with the opportunity to log in to Dropbox, there is just one last option for you. You will need to completely delete TapNote from your device and then reinstall it from the App Catalog. Once back on your device, follow the steps above to connect it to Dropbox and all of your articles should reappear and you will once again be able to create new documents.

TapNote (all devices) is available in the webOS App Catalog for $5 and is compatible with all webOS devices running webOS 1.4.5 or higher. You can also try TapNote Lite for free to try out the app, but will have some limited functionality.

Can this also happen to picsel smart office? And do you know how to get Dropbox to work in it again?

Thank You! I rely on picsel smart office and Dropbox weekly, and have had to switch over to google drive but I like Dropbox better!

I just downloaded the "lite" version of tapnote and "linked" it to my Dropbox - signing in and allowing access and nothing is syncing to the app...? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks again

Hey there, developer of TapNote here. TapNote will only sync documents that match the following conditions:

1. They are located in your root Dropbox in a folder named "TapNote"
2. They have a .txt extension (and are a plain text document)

By default, there should be a Welcome to TapNote.txt file there when you first setup sync (unless you deleted it first).

If you continue to have trouble, feel free to email my support email! I'm always happy to help, but probably won't catch future comments on this article.

Thanks One Crayon,

that was very helpful and now I understand why nothing is syncing... because NONE of my files in dropbox match those stipulations :-( and I don't want to go through my hundreds of .doc files to make them .txt files :-/ I need the "formatting" - Mostly Outlines done in Word 07

But I do appreciate your answer - which is far more than I have received from pixel smart office support/developer (nothing)...

Thanks again!!!

Just an addendum to this tip (I'm TapNote's developer):

A lot of people run into trouble when they restore TapNote from their webOS account because everything will work except sync (some weird preference-saving related bugs that I have never been able to isolate). In this instance, disabling Dropbox sync and re-enabling it will probably not work, so you will likely need to delete and re-download TapNote.

Dear Adam thanks for the post, the problem is Dropboxify, Tap Note works ok,

Many sent mails for help, but Developer hasn't responsed yet.

this is one of the best app ever, our friends of WebOS internals might find a possible solution?

Dropboxify HD already got update and phoneversion will get:

I'll do a phone a version as well.

The Touchpad update has been sitting in "Ready for Review." =(
I hope that somebody at HP is still reviewing apps/updates.

Thanks to One Crayon.

Turning the dropbox sync off and then on on my Pre 3 did not work for me so I deleted the app and reinstalled and it is working now.

I have used Tapnote on my Touchpad since it was first available. It is a great app, probably the one I use most.

I'm now dual booting into Android. Will a version for Android be available?

An Android version of TapNote is not likely in the short-term future. I've been playing around with a version 2.0 for other platforms, but am not happy with the performance of the features that I feel actually distinguish me from the competition so things are moving slowly.

One month without a single post. So sad.

Where is the tip on how to fix a broken WebOS Nations connection. I think mine is broken. I no longer get any new articles. ;)

<crickets>

Am I the only one, including the (former?) editors, who still monitors this site? Why have there been no articles since mid-June? Did Derek quit?

Derek certainly didn't quit. He's just writing articles about other Mobile Nations platforms that are currently being used by the masses and updated on a regular basis. The sad fact is there is no new webOS news and there hasn't been for a long time. Even LG purchasing the webOS unit from HP wasn't generated any news because nothing has come from it so far except vague rumors with no substance.

I still check the site weekly including the main page. I'm sure most folks in the forums at least look at the main page to see if there's any breaking news, even though we all know there hasn't been any 'real' news since August 2011.

Who is John Galt?

OK Honestly! It's been 2.5 months since the last article! Will someone please post an article to let us know what's going on? I know it's been a while since any developments for webos, but seriously, no developments on the LG front? Are all porting efforts done? We've been left hanging by Palm and HP - don't leave us hanging webOSnation!

I agree. At least a good bye - please just monitor the forums for more info. Although people used to complain, before there were even articles about the "competition." Now, just virtual dust accumulating. The home page looks like Pompeii - like life was just going on then wham! Huge tragedy and when the archeologists finally uncover the site, it will look like life just stopped and nobody had time to say goodbye.

I think that they should let the community take over the site. Allow community members to post articles, and admin the site.

I knew that this day would happen. It's very sad, but it's not a surprise.

I've checked the front page everday since the last article.

Sad, that there is no news. Maybe there's a reason there hasn't been any articles.

Nice tutorial adam.

Don't give up on us babeh

This article about a solution to a broken dropbox is helpful. Thanks for sharing the Tap Note lite application for free so that we will be able to try on it for future use. This is a great idea!

Well, it's been one year to the day since our writers have bothered posting anything on the main page. No information about LG. No information about webOS Televisions. No rumors about phones coming in the future. (and there ARE rumors) No information about webOS television development. No articles talking with the new developers. No discussions about the new api and app writing techniques. Nothing. So very sad considering the site didn't have to die and yet, they allowed it. RIP Palm and webOS.
