Foursquare jumps to version 1.5 18

by Derek Kessler Fri, 23 Jul 2010 12:59 pm EDT

foursquare 1.5 Zhephree has pushed out version 1.5 of his built-from-scratch Foursquare app, and it’s looking good. Literally, the update has brought a visual refresh to the app that brings the pretty and the clean. Additionally, there are a number of bug fixes in the update and a revamped navigation menu to help you with your checking-in around the world.

Speaking of checking-in, Foursquare recently passed one hundred million check-ins. The location-based social network has been growing by leaps and bounds, with check-ins coming now at a million a day.

first!

....and it still can't post to your Facebook. Until that happens, this will be one of those apps that I use whenever I remember, rather than one that's open all the time in card view!

uh... it can... been doing that from day 1...

wow I hardly even use the app... have had it since day 1 and I know that it does post to Facebook... did u even try to do it??

Hardware is gonna be here in the coming months.

Mine post to Facebook & Twitter just fine. Need some help?

yeah I'd love the help! I've gone to preferences and accounts and twitter is there but no FBook...

...guess I'm missing something

Just check in someplace and make sure the 'f' icon is hilighted...

Oflats,
You have to go to the foursquare website and loggin. Go to settings. At the bottom you can link your Facebook and Twitter account.
After you accept linking your accounts; you can change if you want foursquare to post check-ins, mayor, and badges (foursquare.com/settings). If you leave the settings all on, then you only have to highlight the little FB icon (webos app) when you shout.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, the app doesn't have the ability to link your Twitter or Facebook accounts. This is because the app isn't posting to twitter or Facebook. The app just tells the Foursquare servers if you want to post to Facebook and/or Twitter and the Foursquare servers handle the posting to 3rd party services.

The comment above me is right: go to foursquare.com/settings and link your Twitter and Facebook accounts.

After you do that, any time you shout or check-in on the app, just make sure the F and t logos are tapped and highlighted and you'll be good to go!

oflats3 = comment fail.
it has been posting to FB and twitter for a long time now

How does foursquare compare to gowalla? I have been using gowalla for a year now on the iphone and the palm pre(currently on the palm pre) and I love it, but would like to get some perspective on how they compare.

Just try it. You'll ditch the Gowalla app in a heartbeat.

I can offer some insight, being the foursquare dev!

They both do the same thing, but differently.

The ideas are the same: go out somewhere, open the app and it uses GPS to find you and presents a list of nearby locations in its database and you "check-in" to that location so your friends know where you are and can meet up with you.

From there, the differences are subtle. Gowalla allows a user to post photos with a check-in on all devices. Foursquare doesn't use any photo hosting, but my app allows you to attach photos to checkins by hosting them on third parties like TweetPhoto and Flickr and it tags them with the Foursquare venue id. So, on webOS, the photo experience in Gowalla and Foursquare is basically the same.

Gowalla allows you to comment on your friends' checkins, whereas Foursquare doesn't.

Gowalla also has their virtual items you can drop and pick up at different venues when other users leave them there, almost like a scavenger hunt. Foursquare doesn't have that per se, however, you earn Badges for checking into certain venues and events or performing certain tasks. So, virtual rewards exist in both services, but they behave differently.

Foursquare has a lot more corporate involvement from other companies which leads to a breadth of contests and free stuff from people like VH1, Starbucks, etc.

Foursquare also has "specials" that any venue owner can set up and the app will tell you about them. For instance, a local bar might give you a free drink every 4th time you check-in.

Foursquare also has mayors -- people that have been to a venue the most times in a 2 month period -- whereas Gowalla just shows the top 10 visitors. Mayors in Foursquare get specials in some venues, like the mayor of any Starbucks can get $1 off a Frappucino.

Foursquare has a point system as well where users earn points and get bragging rights on a leaderboard. The points reset on Sunday nights and don't award you anything other than the ability to say you were number 8 in your city. They're in the process of reworking the point system.

Gowalla won't let you check-in to a venue if it thinks you are too far from the venue (it disables the check-in button). Foursquare will allow you to check-in no matter what, but if it deems you too far away, you become inelligible for mayorships, badges, and points. That way, you can still at least let your friends know where you are.

The main difference between the services seems to be this: Foursquare seems more about discovering new fun things in your city (tips at each venue, showing you want's trending near you, letting you check-in anyway) and hanging out with your friends, and earning free real-life items, whereas Gowalla seems to be more about every man for himself gaming.

Obviously, I like Foursquare better, and not to sound egotistical, but I think my app just functions better than Gowalla's, at least on webOS. Can't speak of other platforms.

So, really, they're the same, but with small differences. I say, try them both out. Of course, if you have a ton of friends on Gowalla, that'll be more fun. Same with Foursquare.

ahhh very good- must have overlooked that. I tend to use Gowalla more and not so much Foursquare bc I hadn't noticed that part when you check in.

Thanks again to the community- some one always has an answer that I'm looking for!

foursQuare is the bomb. I love using it & it's fun...
