Foursquare for webOS hits 1.0 (in the Web Feed) 64

by Dieter Bohn Tue, 30 Mar 2010 1:52 pm EDT

Foursquare has been taking full advantage of Palm's advanced app distribution model - with the standard Foursquare app in the App Catalog and their newer versions via Palm's Web Distribution Model. The web feed / rapid release version, Foursquare (Now), has just hit version 1.0 and comes with a cleaner look and feel and what appears to be plenty of other small fixes.

Go on and download Foursquare for webOS now, you friend-stalkers and would-be mayors.

the sceenshot is from the New Orleans area!
yay! lol

hey, i'm the developer... born and raised (and still living) in Metairie.

Good work, much nicer than the previous beta

yea i was beginning to think that i was the only person on here from New Orleans...lol

oh and btw, nice app!

Ahh! Metarie, One of the best places in the country. I used to travel there often. Damn, now I'm wanting a Poboy so bad. Sigh!

Seems like 1.0 took out the search feature. Any one else notice this or am I missing something?

It now has type to search on the main screen.

yep! just go ahead and start typing

Thanks, guys! Much better! :-)

Nice, I didn't realize that and when I go to a certain location, it doesn't show up on the list so I have to search. I DL this when it was first put out and I deleted and went back to old version b/c didn't have search function... lol

You know... I've tried for over a month to understand Foursquare and Gowalla, and I have to say that this is one of those Internet things that I just don't get.

Twitter, on the other hand, I didn't understand the appeal of before I used it, but when I got my Pre and then we eventually got a bunch of Twitter clients on it, I tried them out and saw the usefulness of it almost immediately.

But with this, as I said, for over a month I've been trying to use them. I only remember maybe one out of every three times to actually "Check-In" at locations when I go somewhere, and it gives me the points, but I find that I just don't care about the 'game' part of it, and don't find it useful in the least otherwise.

It goes a lot better when you've friends using it... you get emails or what have you telling you where your friends are so you can go meet them and such.

Some venues offer Foursquare deals to the mayor of that location (eg. free drink, some sort of discount, etc.)

Hey, thanks for the plug! I'm the developer.

Plenty more big fixes coming this week, too. Keep an eye out.

@sirgeoph, I have a question... When I propose an edit to fix incorrect or fill in missing data, does that get through? Seems like every edit I've proposed never makes it.

i'm not fully sure. foursquare hasn't really divulged how this happens. i believe it appears to superusers as venues that need to be merged, so basically, you're waiting on other users to approve the changes.

AFAIK, they don't really, and that's nothing do with zeph, it seems to get dropped on the 4sq side. Better to use getsatisfaction.com/foursquare or find out who your local SU2 is.

awesome! downloading now!

Are these two separate apps, or just updates to the base app?

Right now I have both on my phone, but should I remove the old 0.8.52 version and just move to the 1.0 version (which I seem to have updated prior to today, since preware it already at 1.0)?

this is basically the beta to the one in the official catalog. instead of building the app from the source and using wuickinstall to load it on your phone, I went with this to make it easy to get new betas.

You can delete 0.8.52 if you want and then when 1.0 makes it to the real catalog, you can download there and delete this beta, or just keep riding with the betas.

You should just be able to update from the Updates app.

I've noticed an issue with the Pre app and was wondering if anyone else was seeing the same thing- my account settings are set to have my checkins be public, and in the app "show my friends" is set to on, but none of my friends can actually see my check-ins. On my profile they will see how long ago I checked in but never the location.

I've seen this happen on 2 accounts from 2 Pres- has anyone else seen this as well?

I have the same issue. my buddy with a bbery cant see where I am through his app but he can see it via twitter or facebook.

also, can someone help me download this? I dont know where I'm supposed to get it from? I cant find it in the app catalog...?

Use preware or appscoop (if your not into homebrew)or just enter your number here:

http://developer.palm.com/webChannel/index.php?packageid=com.foursquare....

and get a text with a link to the app

i ended up figuring that i could grab it off of preware. the website didnt send me a text even though i inputted my number a couple times.

also, should preware take a minute or so to launch? after i launch it, it updates the feeds/crap and it takes awhile.

thanks!

this version fixes that bug. in the old version (0.8.52) the "show your friends" switch was backwards

oh, that's what that was?? I'm officially switching to the beta full time now.

BTW the beta doesn't show up in the Universal Search on my phone when I type "fours..." (but the normal one does). Any thoughts on why?

I'm a new user to Foursquare and I've just installed this app. It looks very clean and well designed. Where will I check-in first?! :-)

Awesome app, props to the developer. I always look forward to updates in this app. Email and foursquare are apps I always have on.

Checking in may seem goofy, but it's actually an app that me and many other people I know use everyday, on webos and other platforms! It's a great way to know where your friends are at at any given instant. Palm should support this developer in any way they can!

I started using this and had it ping on fb. I converted at least 10 people now and we're having a blast using this app. Very useful when we're all trying to meet up, too.

I'm not worried about the repercussions. I have my fb profile on private on almost everything(you can't even add me as a friend unless I add you), and I only really keep personal friends on there.

Useless app but thanks for trying.

If you have friends using it, it's not. Plus a whole bunch of businesses are now offering specials related to this app(a pizza place near me for instance offers free beer a day for the "mayor".

I don't drink beer. Still useless.

So if it isn't useful to you it's worthless, huh? Well please inform us what we are allowed to use. Get off your high horse.

I did not say it's worthless. I said it's useless. Two different things, jack.

I don't need an app to help me coordinate with my friends. Why go through the trouble of using an app to accomplish something as simple as calling someone and saying:

1. Hey Bob, want to shoot some pool later tonight?
2. Yea sure, where?
3. How about at Shooters?
4. That sounds good, maybe 8pm?
5. Sure thing, I will meet you there. I will call the rest of the crew and see if they want to join us.
6. Sweet, I will do the same thing. See you tonight. Ok, later.

How hard was that?

dude, don't be so harsh. Just cuz you don't use it doesn't mean it's a "useless app." The developer made something to help other people coordinate/meet up with friends.

Just because a particular app doesn't necessarily help you in day to day life doesn't mean it's useless. Relax a little... Maybe a beer could help?

OMGWTFBBQ THANK YOU FOR CREATING SUCH A WONDERFUL APP! HOW COULD I HAVE LIVED WITHOUT IT! OMG WOWOWOWOWOW OMG!!

Is this much better?

Why is it that people can't take criticism. I even said THANK YOU FOR TRYING. Are we supposed to ride a developer's man bone for releasing an app?

If it's useless for me, it's useless for me. Do I need to sugarcoat everything said to please someone else's ego?

Thanks for the beer, even though I don't drink. Maybe you should hit that pizza joint with the other poster and enjoy some free beer while toasting for this MAGNIFICENT app.

Or, perhaps if you don't use the app, you could just move on to the next article....instead of insulting folks just because it does not fit into your universe, of which you are clearly the center....

+1 well said

On the Presidential Election Day, do you carry on with your life and not vote if you don't like the candidates? Just because I do not agree or like an app or an article, doesn't mean I can't express my sentiment on the matter. But this is all moot to you, since you probably won't be eligible to vote until 2016.

"instead of insulting folks just because it does not fit into your universe, of which you are clearly the center"

Emphasis added because you clearly missed the point of what he said.

I agree with you. This is useless garbage.

But moreso, you can already see from the responses that this isn't your class of yesterday's smartphone users.

Apple popularized smartphones and for better or for worse, this is your new market. Feature phone users basically that wouldn't know a PIM from a hole in a ground. They want their facebook app, 3D games with no buttons, and apps like this one.

Palm still hasn't recognized or adapted to this new market. Frankly, i'm not sure i have either. I'm still surprised at the heavy volume of dumbphone minded users on here who whined about losing contacts and relied on the Palm Profile.

These users are mesmerized by the larger 4" screens, virtual kb's, and don't think about being productive.

I completely agree. It's a geek subculture that is being formed, that just amazes me on how much they are growing dependent on apps like these, just to do get common tasks and activities done.

Why do I need an app to know where my friends are at, when I can do the same thing by simply calling them and asking. Why do I need to open up an app, configure it, wait for it to acquire a GPS, determine my location, etc etc.

Just call them for Christ's sake and stop acting like a damn geek or nerd. These are the type of people you see walking around the mall like drones, with their noses stuck to cell phone's display, looking like morons when they think they look cool.

Yeah! You *insert more insults of the community of people reading that participate at this site* need to *condescendingly tell them to do some action*!

You are still ridiculous. I understand that the app is not for you, but seriously, do you think that you could keep the insults and lamentations on the decline of society around you to yourself? Maybe?

i hate when people put their house as a venue. so dumb.

Whenever 4sq gets around to supporting private venues, perhaps you will feel better. :)

so far I've been unable to add pictures to venues - Am I doing something wrong?

this version has been out since thursday...it is buggy but 1.0.2 was just released in the updates feed!

+1 @ GFS

why do the different foursquare apps show such different locations and places?

Because the GPS in certain other phones sucks. (*cough* iPhone)

http://www.getsatisfaction.com/foursquare or make friends with a local SuperUser Level 2 (ie me) and address corrections can fix a lot of problems.

1.0.2 is still stuck refreshing :/ do i hafta delete the App Catalog ver?

One app I won't be installing, what a terrible idea.

the app or Foursquare itself?

i dont know if its me but this version seems more accurate at finding locations then the one in the app store...also seems that the one in the appstore is affected by the 1.4 timeout problem

I've installed the beta and I'm totally frustrated with it. It will reliably pull all its other functions except pulling in the checkin locations for where I am. The circle just goes on an on. The main app does this occasionally but basically works most of the time. I notice however that the FB stocks on the initial refresh too however, and now wondering if config issues or tweaks may be affecting this type of app.

Just updated 1.0 to 1.02 and like the subtle little changes (the ones that I noticed anyway!). New buttons on the shout out/twitter/facebook checkin page, the places page is a little cleaner. Also notice there's no "pulsing" on the loading splash screen now. Once its up it finds my location and loads places really fast! Nice work, keep the updates coming!

Anyone else finding the "leaderboard" button brings up the foursquare web page...in the app itself? It doesn't open my browser, but let me surf in the app. But I want my leaderboard back...my friends and I use this for friendly competition...but now I don't know where I stand

didnt think the original can get much better, this proves me wrong.. love it. is this hitting the official app cat soon?

Hmm... I cannot get the 1.0.0 or 1.0.2 versions of the app to go beyond the "getting location" screen.

(The app catalog version works fine.)

I've tried deleting both apps, rebooting, re-installing only 1.0.2, etc. No dice.

This is a Verizon Pre Plus with 1.4.

(If there is a better place to post bug reports, someone let me know - I couldn't find any place obvious to do it.)

For those with problems getting the location - try hitting the prefs and loosening up the accuracy. For some reason, the latest versions seem to have this problem.

In my case, I cannot even get to the preferences window. The 1.0.0/1.0.2 versions simply hang on startup. (I've got JSTop installed, but if there are other tools to help track down what might going wrong... let me know...)

having the same problem as swinokur...did anybody find a way to resolve it?
