Fun Friday Oops: Docs To Go icon on TouchPad? 41

by Derek Kessler Fri, 11 Feb 2011 12:27 pm EST

It’s been several months since BlackBerry maker Research In Motion snapped up Documents To Go maker DataViz, in essence cancelling the frustratingly in perpetual development Docs To Go editing suite for webOS. QuickOffice has stepped in to eventually fill that void, but in the meantime even the just announced HP TouchPad is without document editing (then again, it’s also without customers right now).

HP’s graphics gurus remembered to remove the Palm name from the App Catalog shopping bag icon, but didn’t check to see if Docs To Go was going to be available on the TouchPad? Oops.

Thanks to Diego for pointing this out!

Or maybe it's supposed to be there? Just sayin... :-)

Not only that, but the calendars have different dates. Feb 9th would be the announcement data. Perhaps the 18th of some month this summer is the release date.

If that is supposed to be the App Launcher page similar to the phones, why are all the icons duplicated? That doesn't happen on the phone. I think they were desperate to fill the screen with apps.

i believe i read somewhere icons on quick launch bar will now remain on launcher pages going forward, or was it just for the tablet...cant remember where i read it though

Yeah, that's the new way in webOS 2.0. Verified on my Pre2 in December.

Actually, during the presentation they mentioned that the apps launcher has a "Favorites" page (the one you are viewing right now) which keeps a list of your most used apps, so that might explain the duplication.

What about the Zune 80 on the Think Beyond event?!

Where was the Zune 80?

So does that button have a LED too? I can't wait until webOSinternalz brings back gesturing to the touchpad, I'm hoping anyways... Funny how the thing isn't out but we have to rely on outsider development to make it what it should be.. sigh...

i was thinking that there will probably be a patch that takes 1cm from the bottom of the screen and makes it a gesture pad. which would be pretty nice because the n it could switch to which ever way the screen is being held.

That is what I think will happen. This was just a preview so they have not shown us everything.

That tells you how much HP has been lying to us. They lie so much they forget to catch themselves. The truth is in the picture.

take the crying to mommy... plz? kthnxbi

I honestly don't think you'll miss the gesture area. I have to agree that different design formats require different functionality. Its not the gesture area that's gonna sell this thing, I mean look at the rest of it. The TP is sweet! I will def get one as long as it isn't over $450. If it is I'd rather get a laptop/netbook.

The icons are duplicated because that is a feature of 2.0. All apps are in the launcher page including the ones in the launcher bar. However they did forget to change the date on the calendar icon in the launcher page. Apparently it can time travel.

So cool!!! I really want to be 23 again!

woo! I'm 23! haha, now its my turn.

well at least people are checking out the apps.....we need to have an app buying blist....support our devleopers....

that's not Docs to Go. That's simply the Doc View app that is on all palm webOS devices....OOPS

It clearly says "Docs to Go".

RIM only bought the Blackberry ports. DataViz will continue to sell their software on other platforms.

No, RIM bought all of Documents to Go and related assets:

RIM only bought the Blackberry ports. Earlier reports (like the one you cited) were wrong.

You're right. Looks like DataViz is just a lying sack of crap after all.

Too little too late as always.

FAIL!!!!

HTC should have bought Palm...

"If you're going to build a time machine into a tablet computer, why not do it with some style?"

I tweeted this during the Think Beyond event.

"Docs To Go?! WTF? Think Backwards? #thinkbeyond @palm @hp_pc"

I keep asking this...but I don't think I've gotten an answer yet...

After the difficult day on Wednesday Feb 9th, when a bunch of us were stunned to hear we weren't getting the 2.0 webOS update as promised, and that the devices weren't ready to ship within days or a few weeks (don't say Veer is ready in a 'few' weeks) as Leo indicated in a speech he gave back in late January. Based on that info, many people got very angry or, maybe just extremely put out. Many people talked about leaving. We (oops, did I just associate myself with 'many people'? Sorry about that, but it did upset me) felt that many developers would abandon developing for webOS. So...

Has Quickoffice made any kind of statement, after the incidents of Feb 9th I spoke of, telling us that they are still committed to completing the Quickoffice editing suite for webOS?

Why would they? The Devs in danger of leaving (if any truly are) are the independent devs. I fully expect Quick Office to be hard at work perfecting their office suite for the TouchPad. The Quick Office folks were surprised by nothing on Feb 9th.

[EDIT] Further, they specifically mentioned Quick Office during the presentation. It would have been best, of course, if they actually gave a demo.

I know, but the presentation wasn't the 'kick in the gut' to the legacy pres and pixis. The revelation that we were not getting 2.x webOS was a 2 step process AFTER the presentation. So, if you are Quickoffice, and you see the nice presentation (which I enjoyed most of by the way), and folks are hyped up...and then afterwards, the questions about webOS 2.x rollout begin.

After the presentation, I told my office mate and fellow Pre owner "I'm a bit concerned they didn't say anything about the legacy devices getting 2.x...I was expecting it to be a 'share the joy' moment at the end of the presentation." I really thought that at the end of the presentation, Jon Rubenstein would hold up a legacy Pre or Pixi and say, what's this? I have a notification? What do you know...it's time to share the joy!" and at that moment everyone who had a pre or pixi in the audience would get a notification that webOS 2.x was available, and then across the country and the world a wave of notifications would pop up, and there would be joy and singing...and world peace. That's what I hoped for.

So, with the disappointment that followed, and the anger and frustration (fueled by people with high expectations...looking around to see if anyone is pointing at me...), did the QO folks start to think whether they are pouring money and effort down a sinking ship? I expect you are right about few developers leaving, but I would like the comfort of hearing QO say "We know there are a lot of disappointed people out there, but rest assured, we are going on with QO for webOS. If anything, we are going to step it up to make sure you don't have to worry if you will have a productivity suite ready for you."

Do I ask for too much? Well, I do watch a lot of Disney shows where it all works out in the end. ;)

sure we will get quickoffice editing suite for webos.....but it will be hp developing it them selves cuz im sure they already abondoned all if any plans to develop for us.

Everyone was freakin about the fact that there was no palm logos anywhere at the event as well. There was one, sure nobody but the overhead camera could see it, but it was there.

This is just a simple standard on most platforms even if you have separate applications for editing you will still want this.

What compels you Derek Kessler to write such an article like this? Over hyping an icon, lol, grow up. Seriously you need to all grow up. It isn't being released for 6 months. Who cares what on it now? This is one sentence said in a real article.

Have you ever been laid? or socially interacted with any form of human life? I would fire your ass so quickly it wouldn't make any sense if you wrote this shit. yet, somehow you and your queer population have managed to endorse low end writing. Do we need laws against this too, oh yeah we do its called exchanging our money for a lesser rate.

You fucking people make me sick, you think your pulling one over on someone like the Queen and Britain's exchange? Your an embarrassment and its reoccurring. You think they don't know what quality writing is or quality applications are and you can just ignore them? I will constantly try to save all of you until I know what your true issues are. She nor He didn't make you this way.

Again, Palm/HP are now Hoarding good ideas on the American Platform and you low-end people starve good people from position to ridicule good ideas with less then mediocre means. I don't know what you pay tribute to or how you look at life but if I was as bad you people. I would fall back in line and gladly allow anyone capable to move forward. Instead you did low end crap like this to confuse the minds of others that would likely be helping you.

I promise you no matter who told you, you would end up a peasant or whatever you are we won't let that happen but you can't disseminate the only people that can help you.

Psycho!

@cooz Get help, seriously. If you have such issues with this blog, then why browse through it? Gtfo and spend time amongst your own kind; delete your account and stop spreading your shitty attitude.

goes to show u how unprepared they were for their big announcement

@cooz, really? If hanging here made me so upset, I would not be coming back.

Also, I stopped counting the times you botched your writing, yet you are critical of others.

So funny, thanks for the entertainment cooz!

I can only guess that cooz was going for entertainment here. If he/she were serious, there are more serious issues to worry about with cooz.

I think Derek and the other folks with P|C are just trying to keep us informed...sometimes they pick a topic that really doesn't need to be written about...but that's ok. We just skip to the next topic and it will likely be better. No big thing...no need to fire someones posterior over this...besides, what would a journalist to without a 'but' to enter into their analysis of a story?

@cooz: It's this simple. You don't like what you read, you pass it up and move along. Nobody here needs people like you shitting all over this blog, so please take your bourgeois bullshit back to (presumably) other iOS boards.
