Getting PreCentral on your Mobile Device 35
In case you didn't know, you can reach PreCentral at http://m.precentral.net - it's a mobile version of PC with access to stories, reviews, and a mobile version of the forums. It works great in portrait and landscape modes. We've got plans, schemes, and machinations to make it better, but for now, does the job, hey? In addition, you can also add it to your launcher and the keenly-designed logo at the top will put a nice, circular icon on your launcher.
Enterprising PC members figured: why not make a little app out of it? After some discussion, we finally have an unofficial PreCentral App for the Palm Pre and Pixi! This is an "unofficial" PreCentral App. It simply puts a PreCentral icon in your App Launcher. Tap it to go to the mobile version of PreCentral to see Top Stories, Forums, Today's Posts, Homebrew Gallery, and search options.
At some point, we hope to have a fancy PreCentral app with lots of bells and whistles. But in the mean time, you are now never more than a tap away from m.PreCentral.net.
Thanks to kmax12 and sketch42 for creating this app.

Really? It's that hard for people to go to the web site and then just save it as a launcher themselves?
You even have a not-so-hard-to-find link to the mobile site off the main site already, unlike many other sites I visit.
Good to see! I was going to comment on the fact that precentral, for all its dedication to webOS and the pre/pixi, was lacking an app like this. Although this isn't anything huge, it is a step in the right direction, and I applaud it. Now all I'm waiting for is a revamped mobile site that is a bit easier on the eyes. Until the, precentral renders beautifully on my pre, so I'll just keep up with that as my #1 bookmark. Keep up the good work guys!
great job, very professional looking
Nice!
I been having this site on my launcher since june even got a nice icon I made for it..to go with my theme

TBH I am surprised that p|c doesn't have some sort of app yet. PC has helped so many devs that they could have made something for the site.
Anyway, it is a step in the right direction. Dieter, Derek, the rest of the p|c editors keep up the great work.
You are the reason this site is #1.
Remind me why we need an app when we have a full web browser that renders mobile and full pages perfectly.
You don't need it. I like how fast it loads so I don't have to wait for all the text and ads to download, when I want to see the just headline. I don't have much free time so this is ideal for me.
I think this should be an out-of-the-box bookmark included with all webOS devices. At a minimum, Palm should put up a landing page with links to "webOS Community Sites" and make that a bookmark.
Would be awesome to have a mobile RSS feed, i.e. a feed that links to the mobile site when clicking on one of the articles.
I usually read most thing in Google Reader or some RSS app, then when interested in an article or a gallery linked, etc. I click the link to view it in the web browser. Unfortunately most sites link to the "full" version of there website, not the mobile version.
It would be nice if there either was a mobile RSS feed with links to the mobile site, or the full site could detect that the user is using a mobile device and automatically redirect to the same page on the mobile site.
i usually get to you guys through google read too. please make the site auto detect and redirect or just a different stylesheet.
but i don't like the idea of a mobile feed, because that would suck when using google reader on my computer.
Unoffical? Does this mean that it will become offical sometime later in the future or there going to be an offical one from another developer?
Lol yeah I had to ask about this in the forums because I didn't think that it existed. Much better to get updates on this version for sure!
now I don't have to show up on my companies web site report. Great improvement....
Excellent. Looking forward to a dedicated app.
How is this an app?
A suggestion for the developer working on the "fancy PreCentral app with lots of bells and whistles." Please make it viewable in LANDSCAPE.
This current version does work in lamdscape.
finally!!
I've actually considered building a precentral app similar to the engadget one as a learning project. I've developed a bunch of PalmOS apps but haven't had a chance to develop for WebOS yet. I'm working on wrapping up a PalmOS contract but after that maybe I'll give it a shot. I'm sure something better will come first, but hey it's a learning experience.

I just added PreCentral's rss feed to Newsroom (which us a great newsreader) and I can get all the articles there displayed very nicely along with my other news feeds instead of cluttering up my launcher. If I want the rest of the website (forums etc) I can click on a link in the rss feed or just go to the book mark in my browser.
I think some serious consideration should be given to the threshold for calling something an app.
Nice GUI, great work guys.
yea please make the mobile site better.
tipb's mobile site is nice
i still prefer just going to it as a webpage on my pre but this is cool for those who don't.
I would like to see a PreCentral Application. ^_^
Yeah I prefer the full site as well... but now I get a nice icon to add to the launcher bookmark ;-)
I added it to my launcher and wanted to change something. How do you delete it from the launcher?
To delete an app press and hold the orange key and tap the app and tap Delete.

how can you make custom launcher icons for webOS?
is it similar to the apple-touch-icon.png files?
id love to see a precentral app, however id like to say the mobile site is one of the best around
Sorry in advance for straying off topic.
PLEASE, review 'YouView' (YouMail) visual voicemail app. Hands down the best Visual voicemail app, I used to swear by Phonefusion (dragging their feet making an app for WebOS) until I tried YouView. The ability to block unknown/block callers at the server lever is awesome! Gdial Pro is not cutting it, too slow to launch and very delayed messages.
This post is from January. I think we'd all love to see an official app now that we've seen both Engadget and WebOSroundup do such nice apps.
