Google Calendar synergy now generates email reminders 46
Since webOS 1.2 landed, those of use that depend on our phones to run our lives have encountered a new oddity: we now get calendar reminders via email along with on our devices. While this confused me at first, I quickly realized what the culprit was: Synergy now syncs alarms with Google Calendar. Prior to webOS 1.2, alarms did not sync between Google Calendar and webOS Calendar, which most people didn’t notice, as we tend to manage our calendars from the phone. With 1.2, calendar alarms are now synced, but they push to Google Calendar as both a pop-up alert (in browser and on the phone) and an email alert from Google. Syncing our calendar alarms is a good thing, as the last time I had to get my Pre replaced (prior to 1.2) I nearly missed my next appointment because the phone didn’t alert me.
Right now there doesn’t seem to be any way to disable the email alerts without going to each alarmed calendar entry in Google Calendar and manually switching it off. Since I am dependent on the phone’s alerts to get me moving to where I need to go, I can’t simply go without the alarms. So I adapted and set up a filter in Gmail to automatically mark as read and delete all emails from calendar-notification@google.com. Once implemented it works seamlessly, though hopefully Palm will address this oversight in a future webOS update.
Edit: For clarification, my default reminder setting in Google Calendar is set to none, as it is on my phone. I set alarms for things that require timed action, so not everything in my calendar needs an alert. Prior to webOS 1.2 alarms created on the phone were not sent to Google Calendar.

Odd, I've been getting those reminder emails from Google calendar since day one.
Same! This is old and rather annoying. The phones reminder is enough I don't need both. But yeah I have been getting email remindeders since 1.0.2
Go into the calendar's options on googles site when you have the calendar portion open and turn off the email reminder part...but with the new update seems to ignore this option now.
I remember turning off email alerts when I first opened my Google account. Can't say that I remember where it was, but I'm fairly certain there is a setting in Google somewhere. This was all prior to acquiring my Pre, btw.
You need a reminder to buy and eat tacos?
I haven't noticed this at all. I guess I need to play around with it.
And one more thing, How often do you polish your dog?
been getting them since day one too.
been getting them since day one too.
You've been getting them since day 12? ;)
Sorry to rain on the parade here, but I also have been getting Google calendar reminders since June 6th. I never used Palms calendar, only google calendar. I just set my notifications to sms instead..seems to be a little quicker.
Great Tip - THANK YOU - I've Been annoyed by these recent email alerts
I think that there is a difference in the way the alerts/alarms are handled, depending on whether the Calendar event was created directly on the Pre or on a PC through Google Calendar. I have received email & SMS alerts since day one for any events that I create in Google, but not ones that I created on the phone.
Maybe since the update, the on-phone created events now push back to Google in such a way as to enable the Google alerts to work??
Major bug-- Synergy did not sync your all day daily recurring reminder to buy and use salt.
you're a f*cking a$$hole....why even say anything if your not helping with the issue....just shut the f*ck up and I hope that palm doesn't push anymore updates to your perfect PRE
Wow...
Wow, get the sand out of your vagina and try again.
There is an easy fix, and it has worked this way for me since I got the phone. Go in to your google calendars settings, click on the Calendar Tab. Now click the notifications tab for each of your calendars, and change the default behavior for Event Reminders to PopUp instead of email, and I think you all will see the results you want.
Did that last week. Didn't work. I think Derek's solution of setting up a filter might be the only option right now.
I have also been getting the email reminders from day one.
no this is a 1.2 issue for me. my gcal notifications are set to popup only. the events i created on the phone have added an email alert to gcal. that is odd behavior.
while palm is at it, also fix the annoying question mark that comes up on google calendar because the appointment wants to invite my other calendar, this is annoying and I cannot fix it...didn't happen before I had the PRE..
the question mark thing happened with pre syncing from day 1 of PRE release
I, too, have been getting email reminders since day one (June 5th for me)... and consider this to be one of the BEST features of the phone. In fact, I rarely use tasks anymore. I just set a gmail calendar event and then set the reminder to one of several choices: at start time, 15 min before, etc. I then get the alert reminder and a couple of seconds later an email to my gmail account. I delete the alert reminder, but will not delete the email reminder until I have actually completed the task or event. Again, this is a great feature, especially for those of us who are memory challenged!!!!!
I figured it out. When you set a reminder on the Pre, it tries to propagate that to gCal. That's good. The problem is, instead of setting gCal
when you say set up a reminder do you mean a event/apointment in the calendar?
No. I am not talking about creating an event. I am talking about setting an alarm for the event.
There are two ways it can be done on the Pre. You can set it for each event manually or you can have the pre set an alarm to all events.
I think this bug manifests on both of the above cases.
There is a way to stop email reminders - On Google Calendar web interface.
1. Settings
2. Select calendars
3. Select notifications
4. Remove the default email reminder
For me I only leave pop-up reminder as a default - This seems to work for me.
I have tried this and it doesn't work... I have never had email reminder nor do I now and even if I put email reminder and take it off it still sends me emails...the post is right, it started for me after 1.2 and there is no way to fix it...that I know of
Yep, this is easily the fix. Just go to your gCalendar on the web, change your default reminders to pop-up, and wala!
I just put an appointment on my Pre and did a sync and it does not show up on my gmail calendar.
for those who like this 'feature/bug', just set default calendar settings online to always send an email. That is after palm fixes this.
This is not happening for me...though I have had reminders come up more than once, forcing me to "dismiss" them twice.
Thanks for this post. These calendar E-mails have been annoying me to no end. I've turned off all reminders in all Google calendars, but nothing stops the E-mails. I had considered filtering them out in Gmail, as you suggest, Derek, but that seemed like a silly thing to have to do. I wanted to stop them at the source. But since the consensus seems to be that there's no practical way to do that for now, I guess the filter is the only way to go.
ditto
late!
I've been getting email reminders since launch
I've noticed something strange since the 1.2 updates. I'm not sure if it's the update, the tweaks, or if it was always like this but I just haven't noticed till now. Between 1.2 and 1.21, I webosdoctored my phone, applied the palm updates and installed the tweaks via Quick Install 2.72.
Now when I open an email the card pops up pretty quickly with the subject, but the body of the email is blank and takes 5 - 10 seconds to populate. This is with both new and previously viewed (from the phone) emails.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Same here... long delay on text of email appearing. This is very annoying!!!
for me, gCal pop up alerts always showed up at the right time on my phone, but didn't appear as being set. They only appeared as being set in the web browser, until now.
there is no way of turning off these email alerts, other than disabling them through the web browser for each individual event, or each repeating series. It doesn't matter if you don't have email alerts set as your default reminder or not, new events created through your pre will automatically be issued one.
this was very annoying to me, and I spent some time trying to figure how to turn them off, but I guess for now there is no easy way out. I am glad that alerts are more properly stnced now though.
I've been getting my Calendar updates since launch, too! Are u saying that they are automatically enabled by default? I have mine set to show my time occupied for work. But I usually get an email, which i promptly delete, since i already know i'm at work, I'm going to disable this one... I'm gonna keep the other email reminders...
Thanks for this! I had been wondering the same thing. And thanks for the filter tip on how to do away with them (As I never use the email alert feature).
Haven't had any problems with this functionality at all. Running 1.2.1 (no tweaks/patches). I have my Google Calendars notification defaults set to "no notifications" on the website and only set an alarm (when I need to) when I put an appointment in via the Pre.
I don't get any gMail e-mail notifications like people are complaining about here.
When I first set up my gMail account (prior to owning a Pre), I played around with the e-mail notification function in Google Calendar, but decided I didn't care for it and turned it off in the Google Calendar settings page on the website. Haven't had an issue since.
I do notice that if I create an appointment on the Pre in a Google calendar and then go to look at the appointment details on the Google Calendar website, it will show that an e-mail notification is set (along with a pop-up notification); however, I never get sent an e-mail by the system. I get a pop-up on the Pre (as I should when event notification is set), but that is the expected behavior. I don't get double alarms or any other weirdness.
Could it be the tweaks/patches or a calendar-related application that is installed on some people's Pre that is causing this for some folks?
I usually add appointments to my work account through my pre so don't normally get this, but I added a reminder once to my google account and it notified me through my phone, my email, and my Google Talk pop-up on my computer's task bar, which I like because it's a constant reminder. Currently you can't snooze the reminder on your Pre for any specific set of time except for 5 min, and there was no visual notification (prior to tweak) if you weren't near your phone when it went off.
Didn't know how to fix this. THANK YOU!
How do you create the rule in Google Calendars to read and delete the notifications from calendar-notification@google.com?

UPDATE: Nevermind, I found out how to create the filter in Gmail. Thanks all!
I have had a pre for about a week and have been bothered by the double notification described in this article. I tried everything the commenters before me have suggested and none of these tips have fixed the email notification for me on my device. However, I think I have found a solution, and it's more simple than you would expect.
Google calendar handles events entered on your pre as invitations rather than actual events that you have created. If you go to Settings > General you will find a line that says "automatically add invitations to my calendar" on the left side in bold and next to this are your choices of "yes" "yes, but don't send event reminders until I have responded" and "no, only show invitations to which I have responded"
"yes" is set by default and is why we are getting email reminders automatically sent out. Checking "yes, but don't send reminders" or "No" has stopped the emails for me on my device.
Funny thing though, Google Calendar still made a pop up reminder in browser, so now I have a new issue to trouble shoot.
Good luck and enjoy -Peter
I had a Pre for a few weeks. The minute keyboard and crappy battery life was the reason for my return.
Here is how you solve the problem of events that are already on your Google calendar made from your Pre. You must go to each and every event and edit it's details. You should see a few selection boxes on the right hand side. Click the "Remove" link next to the email reminder. That part of the problem, solved.
As for all new events made from the Pre automatically setting up an email reminder one day pre-event (pun intended), I couldn't tell you since I no longer own a Pre.
Note: The technique above did not work for me. I had "yes, but don't send event reminders until I have responded" selected, yet still continued to receive email reminders.
Best of luck to you all.
Thanks for the filter idea. This worked perfectly in my test event.
I think those who are not having this problem aren't setting a reminder for their calendar event. the notification they are getting on the pre is for the event, not a 15 minute reminder for the event. in that case gcal doesn't set it up to send an email reminder, assuming your default is no reminder.
