Google Latitude on webOS: Visible after Patch 22

by Dieter Bohn Tue, 15 Dec 2009 8:08 pm EST

Sure, the quiet changes made to Google Maps on webOS devices recently are quite nice, but it is a little short on some of the fancier features we'd like to see on the service (notably: Street View). There's another Google Maps feature we've been lacking, the friend-finding, stalk-a-riffic Google Latitude location sharing service.

Enter Forum member d.moss, who has discovered that if you apply the iPhone User Agent Tweak in WebOS Quick Install 2.96 and then punch  "latitude.google.com" into your web browser. Instead of getting a message that Google Latitude isn't available, you get your Google Maps app loaded up. It jumps you right into a friends-view where you can, yesiree, take a look at their location..

We just tried it ourselves and it does seem as if much of this is built for webOS but some parts aren't quite fully baked yet -- navigating around and using the back gesture will eventually make the latitude features go away. We do see options for sharing your location and the like, however.

So while it's not quite usable on a day-to-day basis yet, big ups to d.moss for discovering what appears to be an upcoming Google Maps feature on webOS. Hopefully we will see it official soon! In the meantime, hit up the forum thread for more screenshots.

Thanks to windzilla for the tip!

sweet going to try this...after work when I can install the'tweak'.

Looks like the tweak was made for iphone and just happen to work for palm pre. Makes me wonder how many of the other iphone things will work for pre. Plus there are few issues with this tweak, anybody knows if those issues are also present with iphone G. Latitude?

If your phone is running Windows Mobile 6.0 or Windows Mobile 6.1 you can get Marketplace by following the instructions in the box below. If you have a Windows phone running Windows Mobile 6.5, Marketplace is already installed on your phone and in your Start menu.

Hello Spammer.

You spammed the wrong site. This is for Palm WebOS devices.

hotness! I think that I should try this out too. 8^D

it's sad google maps on webos is not on par with google maps on winmo, something tell me google is not going to put too much effort on webos apps.

They were initially gung-ho about it.

I assume Google services and updates on webOS will always come a few months or more after Android. Even then, things like Voice Search, Google Goggles, and others may never come.

Which is fine. Our platform will find its own, perhaps better, solutions.

Google has their hands full these days. Mobile google maps across all platforms constantly had steady updates.

Now, not so much. Also keep in mind, its all HTML5 based so you can put your hooks into all of it.

I'm thinking good things are coming at CES though.

How does Google Lattitude compare to the newly released homebrew app "Cellflare"?

so far cellflare seems like more trou le than its worth. My wife has winmo and the cellflare app is almost unusable on it. Latitude is much easier and you can keep giving your position even after you close maps down. So far cellflare seems like it only works if your running the app.

i love the fact that it came from New Orleans :-) lol

that's actually my brother who set his location manually. we live in dallas, tx. we have a lot of family in monroe and rayville though.

"ERROR: User Agent Spoofer version 2.2 for all Palm webOS devices
Copyright 2009 Carl E. Thompson (devel-webos.....)
Much help from hofs1 and wtgreen at PreCentral.net. Thank you."

?

And latitude.google.com shows me a white empty page...

And the best... i tryed to restart and hope then will it works.. but... my Pre dosnt start...even after removeing the akku.

"PALM" is on the Display... and nothing Happends...
startet 7:43 ....now its 7:47 and still not bootet up.

Same thing happened to myself and AT LEAST two others. Something is happening when installing the iPhone User Agent hack, which does not allow Luna to start completely. PLEASE put a warning in the article, because my curiosity was piqued by this article to apply the user agent hack again. I'm trying everything I can to avoid a trip to the doctor (I've got some pictures of my dauther's first trip to Chuck E. Cheese's on the phone I don't want to lose), but after staying up until 2:30AM this morning, I'm afraid the doctor may be my only choice.

If you are using 1.3.1, then using the 1.3.1 doctor will not touch the USB drive portion of the phone, all your pictures and music and other crap there will still be there after you doctor it. I can verify this, as I doctor'ed my pre after 1.3.1 was released to "clean" it up....

Many thanks for the verification!

I need Dieter to verify this. I was too lazy and didnt want to type in the web address for latitude and just clicked on the google maps app, I already had iphone spoof installed, and to my surprise latitude showed up, it pin pointed my location had the friends button on the bottom of the page and i was able to use the back gesture with no problems. I looked up my wife on the friends page and it showed her at work(thank god). Can anyone else verify this also works.

Right i think its only important to use latitude.google.com in the first start.
Now i also can just open Maps and hafe latitude.
Friendslist needs more color..., background update is missing (updates only if Maps is active) and then the GPS location updates extreme slow in live view with Google Maps...

But it works (after i flashed because the error above...)

I noticed that once Latitude is working in Google Maps, it no longer asks me to allow access to the GPS on start up. Has it enabled it by default even though I have it turned off in Location Services?

My Pre (running the latest updates) just says...Your browser is not supported..

I have tried everything and it says browser not supported. What could I be doing wrong?
