Google Mobile search adds app results for iPhone and Android, webOS strangely absent 29

Google app search results Google has yet again tweaked their mobile search results for more coolness, this time adding in links to apps. Say, if you were to do a search for Download Shazaam on your imaginary iPhone, Google would hand you a link to Shazaam in the iPhone App Store. Same goes for any app on Android. But what about webOS and Palm’s ridiculously open App Catalog feeds? Nowhere to be found.

Of course, this isn’t the first time webOS has been overlooked by Google for no good reason (excepting the usual: marketshare). Here’s hoping that whatever HP is looking to brew up will help turn things around as far as Mountain View’s perception is concerned.

more reasons why google is turning into another Apple corporate giant that's going to try and dictate to everyone what they want people to buy or do with their devices.

Give it time and they will try and dictate to media what they can and can't say about them or their products and what format they can use.

if there is no new Palm/HP hardware coming out and I have to go Android I'm gonna be bummed.

In fairness to Google, when it comes to search, they don't want to control /what device/ you search on. They just want you to use /them/ for search, regardless of the platform. And with mobile search being a huge deal these days, they want to draw as many mobile users as possible to their search engine (versus Bing Mobile or similar options).

I suspect this is less 'dictate to everyone what they want people to do' and more simply that they looked at WebOS and decided we weren't a large enough market to bother investing the engineering time for that type of app search functionality. (Or, conversely, they're letting some engineer finish it in his or her own 20% time, and they're simply not yet done.)

I can't imagine it takes a whole lot of time to integrate an open feed into their algorithm, especially after the grunt work has been taken care of getting it set up for the iphone and android. I guess we'll know for sure their level of deviousness if nothing appears over the next couple days.

google can go screw, when that new palm phone comes out in aug (my own prediction) the app store will blow up and they put palm in

I'm enjoying it now on my brand new HTC EVO 4G.. This thing is fucking awesome...:)

Are all of us homebrewers' that are running the iphone spoof doing ourselves a dis-service on the google front? all of my hits are be logged as iphone hits....hmm Hate that....but love the spoof and what it does for my phone(google latitude etc)

Come on google get with the webos community already! Have the registered iphone hits are really WebOS!! ;)

The spoof does not show your phone to be an iphone. It's still shows it as a Palm phone. It just tricks the site into thinking you have the same resolution as an iphone. At least that is how I understand this patch to work. I might be a little off on that.

My understanding is that it does indeed make the site think you are using an iPhone by changing the user-agent http header variable.

The resolution part makes no sense since the Pre's resolution is identical to the iPhone's. Only the physical screen size is different.

just what happened last time...bah on them (google) for dragging their feet on including WebOS!!
Admit it google!! WebOS is awesome!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a whole lot of positivity going on in Palm/webOS land in the past few weeks.

It happens in Google's website statistics page too. webOS simply doesn't appear (all mobile WebKit browsers, interestingly enough, pop up as 'Safari').

Wow, are people in other parts of the country using "Mountain View" as a synonym for "Google" now? Very interesting. I get it--Redmond, Cupertino, Hollywood, Detroit, Washington, etc. But I hadn't realized Mountain View had been similarly co-opted. It's oddly chilling somehow.

"webOs strangely absent" ???? WebOs sucks and half of the palm users are jumping ship to android there's no need to make it available for webOs I wish they would but they won't

I just found out that Google Voice was now available to Webos. So they haven't abandoned us entirely. I also noticed that the NY Times is consistently listing WebOS as a up and going alternative to android and the iphone. They haven't touched us since January. Both are good news.

you guys who are not on webOS and have such a hard on very supposibly getting the (eh hem) latest and not so greatest phone and still come to a site titled precentral are just plain immature, ignorent morons, who have given into nothing more than over advertised wanna be state of the art phones. Better you than me. Enjoy your big fat over sized, soon to be broken new toy.

+1

All these idiots blabbing on and on about Evo. Good grief, that thing is a fricken brick.

Fine by me... I don't need any other crap mucking up my search results.

App search? Meh.

That's what Preware is for.

who cares? Preware is safer. Wideopen distro leads to bad programs (trojans & trackers). Needs to stay in order. This is simply Google taking a shot at Apple so it can list it's jailbreak apps, AND collect more revnue of it's ad's instead of Apple and their new iad crap. Come on peeps, webOS is not intentionally being left put. This is simply the wolf google eatting at the apple bear.

Nothing "Strangely" about it, you're more likely to see Samsung's BADA there before webOS. It's just non-existent in mindshare.

On the other hand, they ignored Symbian and BB, so they are just going with the most popular smartphone platforms. Before anyone mentions Symbian - I meant smartphone only platforms.

Google hates us, and I hate Google.

PS: EVO was bested already yesterday with the announcement of the new 1.5GHz processor and the slew of WP7 phones.

android wp7 ftw!!!

I agree with torpedomagnet that it couldn't possible be too difficult to add to Webos some of the features/services Google offers on other mobile web browsers. I don't think it's a market share issue. Has anyone entertained the thought that Google see's Webos as a serious threat!!! I do concede the fact that a lack of API's in the SDK account for some of the missing features. Anyway, just a thought.
