Google Voice Updates Mobile Web Client 44

by Dieter Bohn Tue, 26 Jan 2010 11:54 am EST

If you're a Google Voice user and for some reason you aren't feeling any of the several options available to you in the Official App Catalog or in Homebrew, then you're in luck. Thanks to Apple's boneheaded App Store policies, Google was forced to step up their game and improve the heck out of their mobile Google Voice interface. The good news is that this 'designed for iPhone' look and feel works just fine on the webOS browser.

The web app works in a fashion almost identical to how our current, native webOS clients work: you find the number you want to call, Google calls you, you answer, and voila: connection via Google Voice.

Sure, you lose things like local contact search, but what you gain is... the ability to tell iPhone users that they're not so special. Either way, Google Voice users can hit it up at google.com/voice/m

Thanks to everybody who sent this in!

Don't feel like hearing "First"
Sorry no comment not a Google voice user.

Posting so Dieter can fix his mistake. This isn't a fluke that it works on WebOS. Engadget got it right: http://www.google.com/googlevoice/whatsnew.html It was designed FOR the iPhone AND WebOS. Give google some thanks for including us in their rollout! Yes it has the "iphone-esque" interface but it has been designed to work for webOS as well!

Oh, and you're wrong about how it works.
Did you not try it out? It sends you to your phone screen to place a call, you dont get called from google...

I'm not sure what I'm enjoying more, the Apple/Google war or the ATT/Verizon war. Probably Apple/Google since I love Google's products.

The usability of this is nowhere near that of a native app. For example, I started typing a phone number and realized I had forgotten the area code, so I went to start deleting it and hit the "backspace" button three times real fast. Well, being that this is a web app, all I accomplished with this was zooming in on that backspace button. So I had to double-tap again to zoom back out and then hit the backspace button slowly.

Also, I was unable to play my voice mail directly on the phone. Truth be told, with the any mobile any time thing on Sprint, I don't use Google Voice for normal calling anymore... there's just such a high chance that a random caller will be a cell number and not cost me any minutes. So all I pretty much need is something that will play my voice mails. Unfortunately, the "Visual Voicemail" app in the app catalog doesn't work for me. I keep getting a sign in error.

It wasn't designed with the Pre in mind, there's already a very functional google voice app for the Pre.
This was designed as a way to stick it to Apple for screwing them in the app catalog process. This won't be better than the native app we currently have, but for iPhone users, this beats the pants off of having nothing.

I use the Visual Voicemail app exclusively. It works great.

Are you sure you are typing in the user name and password correctly? Try going to the google voice web site from a computer and see if your log in works there as well.

There is actually an issue cropping up with gDial Pro relating to the log-in thing. The developer is working on it but the speculation is that the new site broke the old APIs.

I am glad this has been recognized, I am constantly getting errors that my user/pass is wrong, when in fact I know they are correct.

uninstall gDial Pro from within Preware and then close the card. Reopen Preware and reinstall gDial Pro v1.1.8. It fixed the same issue you are having for me.

you guys are quick. I used the web interface 2 hours ago and it was still the old version. I have been using the web interface for reviewing voice mails. For my needs, it worked.

I was able to use the old site to stream my voicemails...Now I can't ...Can someone else confirm this....I guess I will be forced to go back to gdial...

right now I can find no way to play the voice mails.... I'd personally be okay and almost prefer that it directly called my gtalk account and played the vm I wanted to hear... That is instead of playing them newest to last. (which can be done by clicking vm or calling your gtalk number)

streaming is nice but it isn't private enough for me

Yeah it looks like we have a voicemail button (that just calls your inbox) in the floaty bar instead of a play button. If you check out the help section it shows the play button there, I guess iPhone users get that.

Actually, when I placed a call it just loaded a 1-850 number in my Phone app. I placed the call, then it forwarded me to the contact's number. The receiving end saw my Google Voice number as the caller ID.

Your voicemails can be accessed by hitting the dropdown menu and going to "Voicemail". Mine are all there, as transcripts. To hear your voicemails, tap Voicemail and it will call google voice. I can't hear old voicemails, and it says I have no new ones, but that's good enough for me.

This is not real helpful to me. I use google voice for voicemail, and I would like to be able to play my voicemail in the webapp. Thank goodness for Gdial Pro.

Google Voice+Chrome+Google Voice Extension+Pre= Excellent ^_^, love clicking on numbers on webpages and having it connect to my Pre to call is just so awesome :). Now for this webapp...err, I guess Apple users are lucky to have this but I'll stick with good ol gDial Pro.

EDIT: Woot woot, was just playing with gDial Pro and it seems with the new webapp gVoice is reflected in gDial Pro as well :). No need to bookmark google voice :)

That's it... I just permanently switched to Chrome. That is SLICK!

My Firefox does this.

This is already available within GDial Pro, just click the little phone icon on the right end of the bar at the bottom of GDial Pro.

And if you click the little wrench icon at the top, you can actually use all the other google tools from within GDial Pro, kinda cool. GDial better get on step with this and take advantage of this or risk being replaced.

I gave up asking for invites and instead just purchased 3 invites for $2 on ebay. It was quick and easy. So just in case you've got that option as well.

Sent you an invite.

I believe Google still doesn't directly support the Pre in any application (except Maps), but at least they have now acknowledged the Pre's existence.

Go to / there's a picture of the Pre along with some clunky ol' dumb phones

Are we dissed or not?

the missed space is making the url incorrect.

Here it is again: http://www.google.com/mobile/more/

edit: you fixed it quicker than I could point it out :-)

This was designed for WebOS also ppl

Even that makes only a brief message of WebOS ("Google Voice for iPhone and Palm WebOS"), but is accompanied by a picture of an iPhone.

Clicking on the link takes you to another WebOSless screen. Hovering over the menu that says "Google for your phone" lists Android, Blackberry, iPhone and Other. Guess which phone is under "Other".

Let's all say it together now -- "conflict of interest"

Uh Houston we have a problem.

So the old way where GV called me, then placed the other end of the call worked well...the inbond call to me was my GV#, since my GV# is park of my Pick 3 - all my calls made thru GV were free (included in my plan).

This new way where a pool of # is used and your phone dials into one of them to then make the other end of the call, well since I'm not calling my GV# they won't be "free", not quite what I want.

GV FAIL.

About time they did something, though I rarely use the mobile version compared to gDail Pro.

THANK YOU GOOGLE....NOW IF FACEBOOK COULD DO THIS FOR US....ILL BE HAPPY

This has broken most of the functionality I enjoyed with Google Voice on my pre. I can no longer listen to my voicemails. I can no longer return calls using my google number. I can't make calls from tbje web app either.

I down.loaded gdial pro ( which I used to use before using just the web app ) and it won't work at all. I can't log in...

ever since they updated the google voice website, I'm am also no longer to sign in using gdial pro. It keeps giving me the invalid login error message. Any suggestions on how fix this?

also, on the new GV mobile website, I can't seem to actually get the voicemails to play. It's gives an error message when I try to listen to them. Thanks in advance for any help.

They fixed it in version 1.1.6. I got it using AppScoop. It will install a separate version of gdial. Just use latest version and when delete the old one.

Google launched a mobile phone for me is good news, I can take advantage of Google's network advantage of resources you want to find the fastest! Example champions online resources

Very much looking forward to this here in the UK. As an academic I am very happy that these can do wonders to online learning. For example an ideal usage would be in delivering Online PhD Degree Programs in a traditional university setting.

Can someone spare a gvoice account. I have a gwave invite to trade. brentlewis81@gmail.com Thanks a lot.

I sent u 1, I already got wave so done sweat it... ;)

Well.. Thank you Apple for offering me an improved Google Voice system and also for the Drupal content management systems that my Palm inherited from your iPhone. I am waiting for new features... but please make sure they will work with webOS as well! :D
